THE BILLIONAIRE'S CRYBABY -
Chapter 216: PROGRESS
Chapter 216: PROGRESS
She shifted her gaze from him, and adjusted herself on the chair.
"Don’t be silly, Ace," she said, after clearing her throat.
The corner of his lips twitched into a wry smile, as he watched her look everywhere but at him.
She was standing on her decision to hate him. He could respect that. After all, he did have a lot of things to understand.
When that understanding came, and it happened that he had been wrong all this while, he would have a lot of apology to give.
Some part of him prayed he was wrong. The truth was that he missed Fay. Seeing her again after so many years, made his delusion disappear.
He had missed her terribly. The sooner he learnt the truth, the sooner he could start to apologise..
His phone rang again, breaking the tension in the room.
"Reign," he thought when his eyes went to his screen.
He wanted to ignore it, but when he remembered her father’s condition, he had no other choice but to answer the call.
"Hey, how are you doing? I called all through the morning but you didn’t answer any of my calls. I was worried about you," he said.
Fay had her face elsewhere, but she couldn’t stop herself from eavesdropping on Ace’s call.
Whoever was on the other end of the line, it sounded like he cared about them.
"You’re at your dad’s? How is he doing? Do you want me to come see him tonight?"
"No? Alright. Just tell me when you’re ready to come home. Goodnight, Reign."
It was Reign, she thought. He had called his home, hers too.
Everything he said was just an attempt to have her soften her heart towards him.
As it would turn out, he was still very much involved with the witch.
"Reign’s father was diagnosed with a brain tumour," he said, feeling a deep need to explain to Fay.
Her gaze went flying to him, as her heart did a double take.
"Really?" She asked, her eyes widened in shock.
She didn’t like the bitch. She would never like the bitch.
But she had watched cancer take away the brightest souls. It was an illness she would absolutely wish on her worst enemies, if she didn’t have a heart.
Unfortunately, as much as she considered herself ruthless, she still did have a functioning heart.
"She said so last night, but I was too tired to comfort her the way I should have. She left for her father’s place this morning before I woke up."
"To comfort her, yeah?" Fay let out a short, huffy laugh.
Ace’s sharp gaze pierced into her, studying her features.
"It’s not what you think," he said after a few seconds of just watching.
"I wasn’t thinking anything, Ace," she said, returning to an expressionless face. "I feel sorry for her actually. No one should go through that."
"I thought you hated her?"
"Oh don’t get me wrong, I do. Doesn’t stop me from empathising with her, does it?"
He smiled, lighting up his eyes. "You know for someone that claims to be heartless, you sure do have a lot of heart. That time with Gabriel, and now with Reign."
"Believe whatever you want to. Looks like the rain has stopped," she looked towards the window. "It’s getting late. I need to get home," she said.
"I’m going to find out the truth, Fay," he blurted, as she made to rise to her feet.
She sat down right back, and threw him a quizzical glance.
"About everything that went down four years ago. I’ll find out the truth. If it turns out I was wrong, I’ll spend my last days on earth apologising to you, and won’t stop until you forgive me."
She looked at him carefully, observing how pronounced the sharpness of his features were.
It showed he meant every word he said, and it worried her.
Arrogant Ace was already such a bother. She wondered how much damage a sorry Ace would do.
"Suit yourself."
She rose to her feet, and made it to the door when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
He turned her around, and gently pushed her back against the door.
"Thank you for letting me buy you food," he said in a breathless voice.
"Yeah, whatever." Before she could stop herself, she bit her lips.
"Fuck!" She cursed in her mind. Habits did die hard, but she wished this one would just perish.
He had always taken it as some sort of invitation. She didn’t want him to think this was one.
"Relax, I’m not going to kiss you until you ask me to. Besides, it wouldn’t be fair to Reign, right?"
She chortled. "Yeah, Reign. Glad to know you care about her."
"Reign and I are not romantically involved."
"That doesn’t concern me, Ace. Let’s just leave."
Her breath was getting heavy as his eyes rested on hers.
His charming blue eyes that shone like the deep blue sea.
She used to be so lost in those eyes, but now, they confused her.
"Can I see Dream when I drive you home?" He asked.
"No. You can’t see Dream."
She expected him to argue or throw a tantrum, but he surprised her by nodding in surrender.
"Your wish."
He moved back, giving her space to turn around.
She suddenly felt an electrical need to draw him back, and kiss him just like she knew he wanted to kiss her.
However, she controlled herself admirably, and instead, walked out of the room.
Ace gave it a few minutes before following after her.
He arrived at the lobby to see Claire conversing with Fay.
"I can really intern in your company?" She gasped.
"I guess you can. The finance department needs a new intern after I fired the last one for being lazy. If you think you can keep up, then come along," Fay said.
"Wow, you are awesome! No more helping Blaire out in this restaurant. Thank you, Fay!" She screamed, and hugged her.
"Hey, don’t be like that. I actually love working in this restaurant, you nuisance!" Blaire screamed from behind the counter.
"What’s all the excitement for?" Ace asked, walking into them.
"Ace, Fay just said I can come intern in her company. How cool is that?"
"Hey, I thought you wanted to intern in Spades. What changed?"
"Yeah, that was before aunt Celine returned. I’d die if I had to see her at home, and at work."
Ace chuckled.
"You can’t talk about your aunt like that," he said right after, growing serious.
"Yeah, you’re not a good liar," the twins said in unison.
"I hate when you do that. Creeps me out," he muttered.
Fay smiled inwardly at the exchange. They had such an interesting dynamic.
It sucked she didn’t have siblings. She would have adored them with all her heart.
"Alright, mum said Colin is coming to pick you two. I’ll just drive Fay home," Ace said.
"Bye Fay. I hope you hang out with Ace more often!" Blaire said.
"Me too!" Claire screamed.
"Bye twins," Fay laughed, as she walked out.
The sky was clear again, and the dampness of the earth was starting to wear off.
Ace hurried ahead of her, and opened her side of the door.
She muttered a thank you, as she entered the car.
He drove off almost immediately, noting how tired she was.
When he arrived in front of the Luxe gate, he expected Fay who had been quiet the entire ride to say something.
She didn’t, so he turned to strike the first conversation.
His eyes squinted when he discovered she was fast asleep.
He was about to honk, when one of the gatemen stepped out, and walked to the car.
"Hey, it’s Ace Atticus. I brought Fay home."
"Good evening sir," he said, and swiftly returned to the gate.
He opened it, and Ace drove all the way into the compound.
Ace stopped the car, but didn’t wake Fay up immediately.
He studied her face as she slept. She looked so at peace. Very much like the Fay of four years ago.
He was content to spend the rest of the night watching her sleep, until a knock sounded on the window.
Looking up, he saw Seth who was carrying Dream.
This was his only chance to say goodnight to his daughter.
He opened the door, just as Fay opened her eyes.
"We’re home already?" She said in a drowsy voice.
"Mummy!" She heard.
A smile spread across her face, even before she turned to see Dream.
She quickly opened the door, and stepped out of the car before Ace could make the round towards Seth.
"My Dream," she called endearingly, carrying Dream off Seth’s body into hers. "I missed you so much."
"I missed you too, mummy. Are you okay?"
"I’m okay, my love. Especially now that I’ve seen your face."
She hugged her tightly again, because for a second in that car, she thought she’d never see her again.
She finally let go before she could suffocate her precious daughter.
"Daddy!" Dream screamed as Ace appeared behind them.
Fay turned around, and for a second there, she felt completely lost.
