Chapter 64: Chapter 064: Negotiations Break Down

"Where I come from...everyone has one husband or one wife...Adrian, can you marry just me?"

"..."

"If you promise to marry only me, I’ll build a good life with you."

This had actually been Sienna Johnson’s wish all along: to marry a man who didn’t need to be exceptional, to have her own small family, raise a son and a daughter, and live a peaceful, stable life.

Her original choice for a husband had been Drew. But now that things with Adrian Desmond had progressed this far, marrying Drew could only remain a beautiful, unfulfilled wish.

"As long as you only marry me, I won’t leave you. I will achieve Arianne and be your wife, and bear your children."

Adrian Desmond didn’t relent, and Sienna Johnson felt her heart slowly chill.

She too had her pride. Seeing Adrian Desmond’s indecision, Sienna Johnson felt her pride wounded and said angrily, "If you love Miss Carpenter so much, and are determined to marry no one but her, then let me go!"

Adrian Desmond looked at Sienna Johnson’s profile and finally spoke, "I must marry Melanie! But, I promise you, I will only marry you and Melanie. I will never marry any other woman in the future!"

This promise...

Sienna Johnson looked at Adrian Desmond’s face and scoffed, "Does marrying two make any difference from marrying ten? In my eyes, it’s all betrayal! Adrian, loyalty is the most important thing in marriage. Look, you can’t even manage that!"

"There are men here who marry ten women; I’m only marrying two! Besides, whatever Melanie has, you will have too! What more do you possibly want from me?"

"I want you to marry only me!"

"Impossible!"

"It seems we can’t agree then." With the negotiations having failed, Sienna Johnson stood up, intending to leave.

Adrian Desmond gazed at Sienna Johnson’s face and asked, "If I insist on marrying Melanie, you’ll still try to run away, won’t you?"

"Adrian, I’ve told you before, I won’t share a man with another woman!"

Melanie Carpenter was Adrian Desmond’s commitment.

Adrian Desmond had promised the elders of both families that he would marry Melanie Carpenter and take care of her for her entire life. Now, with only Melanie left in the Carpenter family, how could Adrian Desmond abandon her and commit such a faithless act?

If it were any other request, Adrian Desmond would agree to it, but this one, he could not fulfill.

"Mai, you can’t escape!"

Sienna Johnson gave Adrian Desmond a smile. "Sixth Master, you’d better keep a very close eye on me then..." It was a provocation, a blatant provocation. Adrian Desmond retorted, "I’m not afraid of you escaping. Even if you run to the ends of the earth, I will catch you and bring you back!"

"Then let’s see about that."

Sienna Johnson walked out of Adrian Desmond’s study and stood in the light. Outside, the sunset clouds were as red as fire. Standing on the second floor, one had a panoramic view of the garden; it was truly a breathtaking sight.

Motherhood endowed one with strength. Sienna Johnson knew she had to fight, not for herself, but for the child in her womb.

If Adrian Desmond couldn’t give her child his complete, undivided fatherly love, then she would find another father for her child!

In this world, three-legged toads might be hard to find, but two-legged men? Weren’t they a dime a dozen?!

Adrian Desmond, did he really think she couldn’t survive without him?!

What a joke!

After their discussion in the study, the number of bodyguards assigned to Sienna Johnson increased significantly. There were at least ten visibly present. It seemed Adrian Desmond had become wary of her.

"Mai, don’t they say pregnant women crave sour things? How come you don’t like sour fruit?" Selena Robertson asked, holding some unripe fruit and looking puzzled.

Regarding Sienna Johnson’s pregnancy, apart from Adrian Desmond and Sienna herself, no one was happier than Selena Robertson.

"Different pregnant women have different cravings." Sienna Johnson didn’t like sour foods; she preferred spicy ones.

There was an old saying: sour cravings for a boy, spicy for a girl. Sienna would be happy even if it was a daughter. The problem was, Adrian Desmond wanted a son! Well, Sienna didn’t care; if he wanted a son, he could go ask Miss Carpenter to give him one.

Kiki stared at Sienna Johnson’s stomach. "...Mai, it’s amazing! You actually have a little baby in your belly. I really hope you give birth soon..."

Both she and Kiki had been orphans. No one cherished the bond of family, of flesh and blood, more than an orphan. Even though Sienna Johnson was angry with Adrian Desmond and considering leaving him, her first thought upon discovering her pregnancy was to have the child.

"If you like babies so much, you should have one too," Sienna Johnson said.

Kiki’s face turned red. "I can’t have a baby all by myself."

"There’s no shortage of men around here."

Sienna Johnson glanced around. There were more than a dozen tall, strapping bodyguards in the courtyard. Wasn’t Adrian Desmond afraid she’d take a liking to one of these bodyguards and have an affair?

Kiki pouted. "...But they don’t like me, and I don’t like them. A child should be the fruit of love. How can a child be happy in a family without love?"

Selena Robertson’s casual words plunged Sienna Johnson into deep thought.

Was her child the fruit of love?

Quite obviously, no.

Her child would have other half-siblings in the future, and she, the mother, was merely Adrian Desmond’s mistress. It was an abnormal family relationship.

"Mai, what are you thinking about?"

"I’m thinking about how pitiful my child is, not being the fruit of love."

"How can you say that? The Sixth Master likes you, and he likes this child very much. Look, the Sixth Master hasn’t only hired an obstetrician and gynecologist to be at home to look after you, but also a nutritionist. He’s even arranged for a nanny for the baby. And every time the Sixth Master comes back, he brings small toys and clothes for the little one..."

Adrian Desmond was indeed very attentive to these matters. "So what?"

"..."

"If Miss Carpenter gets pregnant, he’ll only treat her better," Sienna Johnson said, her voice sharp with jealousy.

Sienna Johnson clearly resented Melanie Carpenter’s existence. Kiki tried to persuade her, "Mai, now that you’re pregnant, you should stop thinking about leaving the Sixth Master... A child always needs a father, don’t they?"

"A child needs a father, yes. But this child’s father will have children with other women in the future. Adrian Desmond’s love will be divided into many portions, and my child will only receive a tiny part of it... Kiki, if my child can only get such a small share of fatherly love, then we might as well have none at all!"

"Don’t think like that. The Sixth Master wouldn’t..." Selena Robertson advised.

"Kiki, if you ever get married, make sure you marry a man who loves you wholeheartedly. A man with multiple wives and concubines is unreliable!"

Selena Robertson was peeling an apple for Sienna Johnson. The knife in her hand paused, and she whispered, "I’ve never thought about getting married in my life."

"Why?"

"Men... are scary."

Being abducted by Charlie Parker had clearly left Selena Robertson with a psychological scar. Sienna Johnson looked at her and said, "Actually, not every man is bad. There are good men in this world... He will be very gentle, love you with all his heart, and marry only you..."

"Mai, have you ever met a good man?"
