Chapter 61: A Bloody Kiss
Chapter 61: A Bloody Kiss
Searching the room frantically for anything he could use to break the wooden panel into two, Orson fortunately spotted a small red-colored ax that had been kept in a corner behind the door, and his eyebrows rose at the mere sight of an ax.
It would be completely wrong to say someone left it there on purpose, but whoever forgot them here certainly did them a huge favor by leaving it behind.
Grabbing hold of the small-sized red-colored ax by the handle, Orson stepped forward, his expression staid.
"Move out of the way." He said to the perplexed Madeline who quickly moved aside for Orson to do his business.
Raising the ax above his head, Orson brought it down on the wood with enough strength he could muster, and the wood progressively began to break when he heard the sound of it cracking. He repeated it a few more times until his actions began to create a hole on the wooden floor.
When he peeped through the hole out of intense curiosity, he could see Cassian’s unconscious face.
"The hell?!" He nearly turned ghost after seeing the situation his friend was in. After confirming it was really Cassian who was buried under the wood, he continued to axe the ground until it split into two, just the right amount of size where he needed to just pull the wood off with his hands.
Watching him struggle to get rid of both woods, Madeline quickly knelt down to assist him with the wood. She grabbed the other end and tried to pull It off with whatever energy she could gather.
At the end, she ended up hurting herself in the process due to the splinters that Orson had inflicted on the wood. The splinter had pierced into the skin of her fingers, drawing out blood, but she didn’t mind it and continued to pull harder with all of her strength, regardless of the pain she felt until they finally got the woods out of the way.
What she didn’t realize was while she kept struggling to push the wood away, a drop of her blood had rolled down to her knuckles and ended up in the mouth of Cassian, and the young lad subconsciously swallowed it when he felt something sweet against his lips.
Pushing the wood aside, Madeline’s happiness was short-lived after seeing the horrible state Cassian was rendered in. He had injuries and cuts on his once flawless pale skin, and one could easily mistake him for a dead body if he was found by another set of humans.
"Cas!"
Quickly bringing him out from the hole on the ground he had been buried in, Orson gently dropped his body to the floor and tried to revive him by shaking him and tapping his cheeks constantly.
"Cas! It’s us! Are you listening??" The unconscious lad didn’t respond to Orson’s words, further frightening the both of them who were left helpless on how to deal with the situation.
"Damn it! He’s been trapped underground for a long time. He’s still alive but we need to get him somewhere safe, and fast." Orson hissed out as he proceeded to remove the cloth they had used to blindfold his eyes.
He broke the chains with the ax, freeing his hands from his back while Madeline tried to revive the young lad in a shaky voice, her eyes already filling up with the tears she held all the while they were looking for him.
"I won’t be able to carry him alone, stay with him while I call someone quickly." He notified Madeline before rising to his feet and taking his leave from the room to go call someone.
Madeline, who barely paid attention to what he said, felt her heart thundering against her chest as she knelt beside Cassian who lay unconscious on the floor. She frantically checked his pulse and breathing, then placed her hands on his face, trying to rouse him.
"Cas, it’s me. Wake up." She looked distraught after seeing the terrible condition he was in, and what feared her most was his unresponsiveness to her method of trying to wake him up.
She cradled the man’s head on her lap and tried her best to wake him up, carefully sizing the wound and marks that had been inflicted on his skin. His face only incurred little cuts and that wasn’t dealt with like the rest of the body.
She noticed the bite marks that trailed from his neck, and another one on his arm, then another one as though two sharp needles had been sunk into his skin.
"What....what did they do to you?" She was afraid to touch him any further at the thought that she might be hurting him. The tears in her welled up and a sense of guilt sank straight into her heart, leaving her weak.
"This is all my fault." No matter how hard she tried not to put the blame on herself, Madeline felt his predicament was partially her fault. If she didn’t let him leave last night, then none of this would have happened to him.
"Cassian! Don’t do this." She whispered, the lump in her throat grew worse as she tried to fight back her tears, and she felt extremely helpless like she did those many years ago when she lost someone special to her.
This only brought back painful memories of the time she had to lose those who ever bothered to care for her. She lost her parents once and it took forever to escape that trauma, and now is she going to lose Cassian as well?? Or was this happening to him because he married her??
Was she jinxed??
In her moment of silent grief, she heard a soft groan that made her pause in her cry, and she automatically froze after lowering her head to look at the man she had cradled his head on her lap.
Cassian’s eyes weakly fluttered open, revealing his Amber-brown eyes that made Madeline’s heart erase a thousand beats, and she fell speechless.
He looked up at her with a dazed expression that Madeline couldn’t interpret. She didn’t fail to catch sight of his eyes opening, and her own eyes widened in disbelief when they locked gaze, and his own eyes grew intense.
He’s awake???
"Cassian?! You’re awake, you’re...."
To her surprise, the young lad suddenly pushed himself up, and his hand gently palmed the back of her head. Before Madeline could guess what was about to happen, he pulled her face closer to him until their lips met, and he gave her a tender kiss on the lips.
The warmth of his lips caused her to gasp in amazement, and her heart raced faster like someone who went on a marathon sprint. The sudden intimate contact wasn’t one she had predicted, and she could feel the metallic taste of blood from his lips, yet found it difficult to break away from his capturing kiss.
But before she could react, the young man suddenly slumped back onto the floor and his eyes rolled back into his head. Madeline was startled by this as she shifted back out of impulse, but seeing he had gone unconscious once again after sharing her first kiss in such a bloody manner, she quickly pushed herself forward to check his breathing and pulse for the second time.
To her immediate surprise, his weak pulse was starting to become steady.
’D....did....did he just....kiss me??’ She asked herself this question while touching her lips with a trembling finger. He rose from his unconsciousness just to share a bloody kiss with her?? Why??
In the process of recovering from her daze, Orson returned a minute later with Geoffrey who supported him in lifting Cassian from the ground. It took a while before Madeline could regain herself completely, and Orson’s voice shook her back to reality as he told her they needed to leave.
Quickly wiping her tears that had stained her cheeks, she rose to her feet and followed them out of the warehouse, and she only noticed now that Lily had vanished once again.
Pursing her lips together at Lily’s disappearance, Madeline shook the idea away from her head before following the two men who walked ahead of her.
Inna, who was waiting outside and drowning in her worries, felt the little light inside of her brighten at the sight of Cassian being brought out from the warehouse, but the smile on her lips instantly vanished when she noticed the condition her brother was in.
"Cassian!" She tried to support them in holding him in place, but Orson gestured for her to stay back and not worry.
"Once he recovers, I’ll be the next person to beat him to a pulp." Uttered Orson under his breath after seeing the awful situation his own friend had gotten himself into. The fact Cassian never bothered to inform him about it was the angrier part.
Without wasting any more time in the abandoned warehouse, they quickly left the area by following the bushy part that had brought them here. Fortunately, Geoffrey remembered the exact route they needed to take so they avoided getting lost.
When they returned safely to the carriage were Amade was waiting for them, the sun was already starting to lay it’s heat on everyone.
"Lord Cassian?!!" At the mere sight of him, Amade got down from his carriage with his face turning pale as a ghost. "What in heaven’s name happened to him???" Amade had forgotten who he was speaking to since his concern had been shifted to the unconscious Cassian.
"Open the carriage first, he needs to see a quick physician."
"I know a good physician who lives not too far from here, close to the village." Geoffrey suggested. "The young man’s situation is really critical and I don’t think we can make it back to your place. Let us visit the physician here first for quick treatment, he is very good and then you can take him back afterwards."
"But..."
"Take us there please." Madeline cut Orson’s response short with her imploring tone. "You’re right, he needs urgent treatment and we shouldn’t waste time with it."
With everyone agreeing, they helped Cassian into the seat of the carriage before stepping in as well.
Orson’s eyes squinted suspiciously at Madeline who looked somewhat relieved. He could remember she was crying earlier when they found him, but he just noticed she wasn’t as devastated as the rest of them.
Was there a miracle in his absence?
