Chapter 62: Waking Up Blind (1)

Adeline stepped into the Duke’s mansion with Elaine after escorting the troubled lady for a walk in the front garden. The heat of the season was starting to precipitate on them, and Elaine no longer felt the need to take a walk in such sunny weather even when Adeline volunteered to hold up an umbrella for her sake.

Stylishly fumbling with her manicured nails to keep her anxiety in check, Elaine felt restless the moment she arrived back at home to face the day, and she had successfully managed to keep her worries to herself without anyone suspecting if something was wrong.

She didn’t dare show her emotions since she had to be a woman with no emotions. She was known for that, the strict ice-cold Lady Elaine and she intends to keep her reputation that way.

She felt at ease when Inna told her Cassian stepped out early this morning, which was a normal thing for someone like Cas who never listens to instructions and keeps moving around, most especially now that Orson is available for him to use as an excuse.

Many hours have passed by since then, and the clock on the wall was already signaling the late afternoon. He wasn’t back yet to even welcome her like he always did.

Like that wasn’t enough problems to worry her troubled heart for the day, Inna and Madeline weren’t available in the house either. Frederick informed her when she asked about them that both ladies had stepped out after having breakfast, and they hadn’t returned from wherever they went to.

’Where are those children??’ Elaine was silently piling up the list of scoldings she would rain down on all of them when Adeline’s voice jolted her to the present.

"...is everything I’ve listed enough for the event, or is there something you would like to add as well?" Adeline politely questioned based on the arrangements they were making for the couple’s union celebration happening next week, and Elaine shook her head despite not grabbing a word she said.

"No, everything else is fine." Elaine dismissed it aside for the meantime.

"Elaine dear, you look a bit exhausted this afternoon, how about a drink to go with some snacks to make you feel better?" Juliana, who sat comfortably on one of the couches in the living room, happily wanted Elaine who was heading up the stairs to join her and Jeremy for some drink, but Elaine straightforwardly refused her fake invitation with a frown.

"Enjoy your drink and snacks, as you can see I am very occupied with the preparations." With that being said, Elaine went up the stairs with Adeline trying to keep up with her pace.

"Mother." Isabella, who sat at the other end of the couch, looked at her mother-in-law with her eyebrows slanted downwards. "You don’t always have to fight with Lady Elaine."

"I am not fighting." Juliana firmly corrected before offering her empty cup to a servant and dismissing her from her sight. "It’s just that son of hers is a really big threat for me and my sons, especially your husband Abbot. I do not only need to make sure her son stays dead in the world, he also has to stay dead from this family as well." Juliana muttered through gritted teeth, and Jeremy’s expression beamed at his mother’s vile words.

Sitting beside the bed of Cassian, Madeline watched his face silently with their fingers intertwined together. Her dark orbs continued to glitter with hope as though she knew the young lad was going to wake up any second now, and she didn’t want to miss it since she saw it for herself.

Her injured finger had been neatly bandaged, but the odd pain she felt inside her heart was nothing compared to the soreness of her bandaged finger.

They hadn’t even spent a month together yet, and she already missed hearing his voice and endless teasing. He looked so quiet and unlike the Cassian she knew seeing him unconscious on a bed, and it made her heart yearn to see him open his eyes once again.

He had to wake up cause she had questions that needed to be answered by him.

Geoffrey had brought them to the house of the physician as promised. Thankfully, the physician was kind enough to offer them help in treating Cassian and warmly invited all of them into his little home. Orson was a bit reluctant to enter since he wasn’t used to being in such a small space, but Inna had dragged him in by the arm, reminding him that they were here for Cassian’s sake and nothing else.

After getting settled in the small airy room where a single bed was laid, the physician got Cassian cleaned and changed into neat clothes before his treatment began.

Orson stood quietly at a corner, he watched inquisitively as the physician added greenish substance to Cassian’s wound, and he leaned to the side, whispering to Inna. "What’s that called?"

"Local herbs." Inna responded in a whisper. "I heard they’re more effective when dealing with physical injuries." She added, widening Orson’s knowledge about the herbs, and the young man nodded his head in acknowledgement.

"Will he be fine?" Madeline asked the physician the moment he was done treating Cassian’s physical wounds, and the physician only shook his head in disarray while pondering on her question.

"It all depends on how quickly he responds to treatment. His pulse is slowly returning to normal so I say we wait and see if he recovers, then you can take him somewhere else for proper treatment."

Madeline nodded her head appreciatively, feeling thankful that the middle-aged physician agreed to help them deal with this.

Geoffrey thanked the physician for his kindness, and both of them stepped out of the house to have a discussion regarding something that looked important.

"Mother must be worried about us. I’m starting to wish she stayed back at Grandmother’s place instead of coming over." Uttered Inna whose expression had dulled up. "She won’t be able to see Cassian like this, and I have no idea how to explain this to her without making sure she finds out."

"Your mother is frightening and smart at the same time." Orson’s tone turned cryptic. "I wanted to suggest we make Cas stay in my place for a few days, you know... till he gets better, but your mother will definitely come visiting like the angry woman she is. With this incident and the case broadening to extents that I can’t figure out yet, your mother will end up extinguishing the last energy I plan on using."

"Urgh! Shut your mouth Orson, you’re going to kill me first before this headache even does the job." Came the weak husky voice of a certain someone that made their heads instantly whip to his direction.
