Chapter 243: Trapped

Pushing whatever furniture they could find towards the door so it would hold. Inna and Madeline went as far as pushing the bed, including the wardrobe to avoid giving Jeremy the slightest chance of getting into the room.

They were both sweating and felt tired after pushing all the heavy furniture they could find. They didn’t stop until they felt the amount of furniture they had pushed would buy them more time to think and find another way of getting out of here.

"This should be enough, right?" Inna’s gaze shifted to Madeline whose tired brows relaxed, and she looked at the furniture they had pushed before nodding her head.

"I believe so."

When they both stepped back, their gazes instinctively landed on the door knob, and they held their breaths.

Along with the frantic pounding of their heartbeat, they watched it twist slowly as though someone was trying to open it, and after several attempts, the door knob stopped rolling. When the door refused to budge, someone’s weight violently pushed against the door, trying to break it open, but with the improvised fortification that held the door, it was able to prevent Jeremy from getting in.

"We need to find another way." Madeline whispered cryptically as she looked at Inna, signaling that the door won’t be able to hold him for much longer.

"The windows!" Inna quickly suggested, and together, they both reached for any window that was covered by the curtains behind them. Opening the window, they immediately looked below, scanning the height, and as expected, it was relatively high.

"How are we going to get down?" Inna asked, finding their situation to be more difficult than she hoped it would be. Madeline remained quiet, thinking of a way, and her eyes widened when she remembered escaping from Roland’s home using the window.

"Sheets!" She muttered, and once again, the weight of someone pushing against the door made their body jerk in response, and she looked at the door. The hinges were starting to come off, and Madeline grabbed Inna’s wrist.

"Grab the sheets, bedsheets, and blanket. We have to tie them together. Hurry!"

Nodding her head affirmatively, Inna moved back from the window. While she pulled the sheets from the bed, Madeline opened the wardrobe to pick out any extra sheets that laid within. Gathering them together, Inna and Madeline began to tie both ends together till it formed a rope long enough to reach the ground.

Taking it to the window, Madeline found somewhere to tie it. After confirming it was firm enough to hold them both, Madeline motioned Inna to go first.

Without complaining or arguing over it, Inna obediently went with it and carefully brought herself down, holding onto the rope they had both made. The door continued to jerk with force, and when Inna made it to the middle, she looked up at Madeline who watched her go.

"Maddie, you should come with me."

"I’ll be down in a sec, just keep going." Madeline assured Inna who was still reluctant to leave Madeline behind. By the time Madeline wanted to come down from the window and join Inna, the door finally gave way to Jeremy who kicked it open with his legs.

All the barricades that prevented him from entering were shoved to either side of the room, and Madelo froze when a cold air hit her skin, sending the tiny hairs on her body standing at attention.

Stunned, Madeline turned around to look at Jeremy who’s eyes blazed with fury. For a sec, Madeline could hear the sound of her heartbeat as it numbed the rest of her senses. She forgot how to run and just watched Jeremy who stepped into the room, taking unhurried steps towards her with a smirk that rang an alarm bell in Madeline’s head.

"Maddie!" Inna screamed her name, visible fear taking over her features as she knew Jeremy must have stepped into the room by now. "What are you doing? Come down quickly! We can still make it."

"Keep going, Inna." As scared as she was, Madeline didn’t think it was necessary to hide now that she had been cornered. "I’ll be fine, Inna! Keep going."

"Madeline!" When Inna tried to climb back up to help her, Madeline released the rope. Since Inna had already made it halfway to the ground, the impact when she fell wasn’t too hard for her, and to her greatest horror, Madeline closed the window and mouthed the word ’Run’ to Inna.

A quick dread consumed Inna’s thought, and she shook her head at the possibility of what Jeremy might do to Madeline. Cas... Cassian... where was Cassian??

"No no! I... I have to get to Maddie, I have to get to Maddie." Standing up on her two feet, Inna made her way into the building again.

Left alone with Jeremy, Madeline’s fist clenched at her side as they both surrounded each other. The look in his eyes held a glint of amusement when her glowered gaze pierced through him, and he chuckled at her audacity.

"Did you really think it would be easy to get rid of me, Maddie?" There was a hint of mockery laced in his tone as he uttered her name. "I’ve been watching you... even at my funeral you and that husband of yours just refuse to play dumb, don’t you? You feel like you both know every goddamn thing in this world, don’t you, Maddie?"

The air in the room went still, and the tension felt suffocating, but Madeline couldn’t care less at this point. If she hadn’t released the rope, then she was sure Jeremy would have pulled Inna back into the room, and she couldn’t afford to put Inna’s life at risk. But then, her decision had placed her own life on the line as she stood with nowhere to run in front of Jeremy.

"It is obvious that you haven’t changed." Madeline dared to say, her resolve staying intact as she hit him with a disgusted look, "whining like a child whose parents refused to give him biscuits. Your ghost should rot in hell!!"

"Why you..?" The next thing Madeline knew, he had her against the wall with his fingers curling around her neck. "Should I tell you something?" His eyes glinted dangerously, "I was the one who grabbed your leg at my funeral you pesky little thing! It was all so planned and I wanted you to hurt yourself, but again, that husband of yours..!!!.." he seethed with pure resentment.

"I’ve been watching you, I’ve always been around you, but that was something you and your loving husband failed to see. You noticed my presence, but you couldn’t tell it was me. How does it feel to be fooled?"

"Let go of me!" Madeline struggled to free his grip from her neck.

"You’re not dying today." Jeremy shook away that thought. "I still have so much to tell you, and I need to exact my revenge before sending you to your maker." He brought his face close, eyeing her slowly before saying out.

"I will make you pay slowly, Madeline. Just wait and see."
