Chapter 211: Familiar Relation (1)
"Have I ever told you how big of a fool you are?"
"I appreciate your sincere compliment, brother." Osvaldo bowed his head politely at his elder brother, Napoleon, and a harmless smile graced his lips. "Your face is sour."
"What sort of expression are you expecting I show, Osvaldo?" He walked up to stand just two feets away from Osvaldo who in return, dipped his head in a low bow, avoiding his elder brother’s menacing gaze.
They were alone in Napoleon’s bathing chamber, and his malcontent was an aura that hardly diminished. To Osvaldo, there was nothing he could do to gain the favor of his older brother, and his smile cracked a bit, an attempt to keep his true emotions shrouded by his nontoxic smile.
"You saw the girl yourself, but you don’t believe me?" Osvaldo tilted his head slightly, his hazel eyes meeting the obstinate ones of his brother.
"She is a married woman, Osvaldo," Napoleon reminded his brother like he was speaking to a moron. "Her husband is a vampire with human blood running through his veins. This is history repeating itself again, and I’m sorry to say this, but there’s absolutely nothing we can do to change that."
"Sorrows, hardship, pain, guilt, sacrifices, demoralizing, anger." Osvaldo mentioned softly, "they have to be crossed in order to make it to the finish line, brother." He cleared his throat and continued, "there has always been a light at the end of the tunnel, it’s how you intend to get there that matters. I still see a flicker of light, and that lady, she holds that light."
Osvaldo stepped past his brother, the sole of his shoes clicking against the tiled floor. "Her Mother was the only existing fae in Whitebridge, the only one with powers capable of creating a barrier that will send these stained creatures into exile. How can we not treat the last fae with respect and offer her the help she needs?"
"She won’t make that sacrifice, you’re a seer, I don’t have to explain these things to you." Napoleon hissed out, "she barely knows a thing about her real self, a piece of her childhood memories are locked away, and it wasn’t unintentional." He turned to look at Osvaldo, his uncertainty becoming clearer in his gaze. "She won’t make that barrier if it comes with a heavy cost."
Osvaldo’s gaze shifted to the side, as though he was thinking about something, but his smile remained intact when he shook his head slightly. "She will do it, she’s going to get rid of our long lost enemies, and flowers shall bloom in Whitebrige city again."
"Delusional fool."
"Your harsh words are forever a sweet tune to my ears, brother."
Napoleon was lost for words as he eyed his brother from head to toe. Osvaldo might be his brother, but he has no idea how his mindset ever worked or how he takes time to think things through. Maybe that wasn’t the case, he was still wondering how he ended up with a brother this susceptible.
"Tomorrow morning, we shall test it." Napoleon made his decision.
"Test what?" Osvaldo blinked cluelessly.
"If her powers are effective or not, you’re dismissed."
"Have a lovely night." He bowed his head and exited the bathing chamber. Napoleon watched him leave till the doors opened and closed, signaling Osvaldo’s leave.
His furry brows creased until deep lines formed on his forehead. If he eventually finds her powers effective, then he’ll have to find a way to convince her into making that barrier, regardless of the sacrifice.
The next day when the sun was out, Madeline was done dressing in the full length mirror when Cassian stepped out of the bathroom with a sullen expression. Her eyes raked through his outfit and she had to admit that he looked incredibly stunning in it.
Why wouldn’t he?
"Nice outfit."
"You call this nice? I look like a peacock!" His expression was peeved after coming to stand in front of the mirror next to Madeline. He ran his hands through the white crisp fabric of his outfit.
His top, which was made of lightweight cotton, had long sleeves with golden cufflinks, and a high collar that hugged his neck snugly. The embroidery around the edges was delicate and intricate, depicting various symbols and patterns that Cassian couldn’t decipher.
He wore tucked under his loose-fitting trousers, which were made of a sturdy linen material that came up to his waist. The outfit was certainly striking, with its stark white color and ornate embellishment, but Cassian couldn’t help feeling out of place with it.
With a sigh, a small voice whispered in the back of his mind. ’you look ridiculous.’ but Cassian quickly pushed that thought aside when Madeline came to stand in front of him, her eyes having a thorough look to see what was wrong with his outfit, and she met his gaze.
"What are you complaining about? You look good in anything you wear. Besides, isn’t white your favorite color?"
Cassian’s brows knitted. "How did you know?"
"We’ve spent too much time together for me to not know." She patted his shoulder and walked past him.
Cassian’s eyes naturally followed her, and his pupils widened slightly when he also took her outfit into consideration. She wore a dress made of soft pink silk, embroidered with tiny pearls and silver thread.
The dress had a fitted bodice and a full skirt that swirled around her ankles when she moved. Her long black hair was twisted into a braided crown, decorated with small flowers. He was only starting to take notice of how the dress really made her fit in with the people of Whitebrige city’s capital.
"You look more stunning than me."
"Why thank you, that’s an honor." Madeline sat at the dressing table feeling confident.
"This is Whitebrige city’s capital, we have to blend in with their clothes, traditions and their style."
"I still need to find Osvaldo so he can complete the information he started. I’m curious to know the truth behind his words and what he saw."
Madeline suddenly paused as she turned to look at Cassian. "But wait, do you have any idea why we’re treated so.... nicely? I mean they gave us somewhere comfortable to stay, a warm cozy room, amazing dishes and now we get exquisite dresses."
"From my little knowledge, some places give their guests the best treatment when they visit, and in most other places, only those who share a high connection with an influential family get to enjoy this type of privilege. They are either being generous, or you must share a relationship with them."
A sudden knock on the surface of the door made Cassian and Madeline stop their conversation mid-way. Madeline got to her feet, already aware it had to be Osvaldo who was here to get them, but after opening the door to pass her greetings, a young lady stood at the entrance, and when she turned around to greet her guest, both ladies froze in silence.
