Chapter 212: Familiar Relation (2)
"It’s... you?" The girl at the door uttered breathlessly, stricken by pure surprise, and Madeline’s gaze drifted from the girl’s face to her feet, then to her familiar face again, and that’s when an awed gasp left her lips as her hand flew to her mouth, finding the girl more recognizable despite her polished appearance.
"Monica?"
"You still remember my name?" Monica, who was also taken by surprise, smiled delightedly and offered a hug to Madeline who couldn’t reject it.
"How is this..? You’re from Whitebrige city’s capital?" Madeline asked after they had pulled away from each other’s embrace, and the girl named Monica nodded her head, her face beaming radiantly.
"It’s good to see you again."
The first and last time Madeline saw her, she was in the captivity of a strange man in a carriage. Her once messy brown hair was now elegantly trimmed and pinned to the side with a Jade pin. Her stormy gray eyes gleamed with warmth, and she was beautifully dressed in a purple silk gown, but it stood out a lot more than Madeline’s dress, which could only mean she was someone who came from a family with higher nobility.
"Who’s at the.....door." Cassian’s voice gradually dropped at the sight of a fifteen-year-old girl who stood at the door, holding hands with his wife, and for a few seconds, he stared in bafflement.
"You..know her?" He asked, making it known that the answer to this question wasn’t what he needed alone.
"It’s a long story." Madeline didn’t have the time to start explaining things in detail, and Monica’s gaze shifted to the young man who stood behind his wife, his probing gaze was fixed on her, and she politely bowed her head in greetings with a sweet smile adorning her lips.
"Greetings, sir, I’m assuming he’s your husband?" Her inquiring eyes shifted to Madeline who nodded her head in response, and that made Monica feel even more comfortable.
"I was told my long lost cousin has been found and brought here, I couldn’t wait any longer to see her so I rushed here, but the world is indeed a small world. Who knew my savior would end up being the one I was anticipating to meet. That makes my trip here even more worthwhile!"
"C.... cousin?" Madeline’s eyes widened slightly at the mention of Niece, and a more pleasant deep tone answered.
"I see you’re already acquainted with Monica." With all heads turning to the direction of the voice, Osvaldo could be seen approaching where they stood in his fancy robe and a friendly smile gracing his appealing face. He stopped beside Monica who pulled him down till his ear was a few inches away from her lips.
"Osvaldo, she’s the lady I told you about." Monica whispered to Osvaldo who’s eyes widened in pure amusement, even though he was already aware of it. "That’s interesting! I guess your journey to Carmarthen wasn’t a hundred percent in vain."
"She’s my cousin?" Madeline asked again, surprise and shock filling her dark orbs as she exchanged glances with Monica and Osvaldo. The bright Osvaldo nodded, placing both his hands on Monica’s shoulder as all four of them took a walk down the hallway.
"Your Mother had families before she left, she was the daughter of a minister who walked in close hands with my Father during his reign. Your Mother was not only known for being an Enchantress, but she was a powerful fae who built a barrier that extended to the lines of Carmarthen. She was a peculiar woman with a beauty like yours, and during that time, there was a myth about ghosts and Vampires becoming one."
"Ghosts and Vampires?" Cassian didn’t quite get it, and Osvaldo proceeded to elaborate as they took a wind through the hallway, only to stop at a painting that hung on the wall, and it was an eccentric painting of black smoke with red streaks of lightning swirling inside of it.
"No one knew where it came from, but we figured it was released from the underground when your Mother’s barrier couldn’t hold on for long. It’s a ghost and this is its original appearance..." he motioned at the black smoke in the painting. "But once it forms a vessel in the body of humans, it takes the form of Vampires, and by doing so, he creates an army of them by kidnapping them, biting them and turning them into what they’re not born to be."
Osvaldo shook his head slightly, "it’s a disgusting creature that manipulates the helpless and fills their mind with misconceptions. It is difficult to find it because it doesn’t possess one body, it switches, so tracking it down has been fruitless."
"How is Carmarthen involved?" Cassian asked, wanting to connect that piece, and Osvaldo turned to look at him.
"Whitebrige isn’t safe either, but we’re not humans too, we can defend ourselves but to a limit. It knows it won’t be able to achieve its plan here, so it goes to the next Town that connects with the heart of Whitebrige city’s capital."
"And that’s Carmarthen." Madeline answered with a gasp. Osvaldo nodded firmly. "Yes, and another thing, your Mother was another attraction since she left the capitals to help the people of Carmarthen with a man I suppose is your late Father."
"Since her Mother created the first barrier, it was afraid she would create a stronger one , and killed them before she could." Cassian completed, making Osvaldo nod his head again.
"That means the one in the shadows that night was it." She looked at the thing on the painting, the black smoke that hovered against a dry land. Taking a step forward towards it, Madeline placed her fingertip against the painting, and a dreadful rush of adrenaline invaded her system, causing her to stagger back a little in fear, but Cassian was right behind her, ready to offer his support as he helped her regain balance.
"We need to build a barrier that can exterminate it from Earth forever, and that can’t be accomplished without you. You’re the source to restoring peace, Madeline."
Monica nodded her head in agreement to the dazed Madeline, "but Napoleon doesn’t fully believe you’re capable till he sees a little display of your powers, and I’ll show you."
Holding Madeline’s wrist, Monica took the young woman down the hallway with quickened steps, leaving the two men behind.
"Where are they going?"
"You’ll see." Osvaldo assured him it was nothing harmful before they followed the direction where Monica had taken Madeline into.
