Chapter 174: A New Male Guard (1)
"Come with you too..." Before Madeline could complete her statement, Alaric stepped down from the podium and was heading towards another empty chamber that adjoined the Courtroom. He didn’t bother to tell Madeline to come along, knowing she was smart enough to comply and silently follow him in order to avoid getting mixed with the situation, and so far, Alaric wasn’t blind to Cas’s enemies.
Hiding her reluctance and squaring her shoulders, Madeline put on a brave face and followed Alaric into the adjoining room. To be honest, she felt grateful he decided to speak with her privately, else, with all those eyes waiting to ambush her, Madeline doubts she would be able to bear their hostility and ogles for another second.
As for Klaus, she wished she could get another chance to dish out enough beating to his existence. Those ill rumors really broke her heart, and she felt happy to have brought her stick with her for today.
"That woman’s insane." Uttered Klaus as he massaged his left arm, his body still quite sore from the beating he received from the mad woman. His brows knitted puzzledly as he watched them go into the adjoining room, wondering why Alaric would suddenly call for her privately.
With too many eyes here, it would be difficult to eavesdrop on the conversation without getting caught.
"Darn it!" He cursed underneath his breath.
Stepping into the empty room and closing the door behind her, Madeline’s gaze studied the simple, yet beautiful architecture of the room that was occupied with two to three arm chairs surrounding a table in the middle. Large frames containing unfamiliar pictures of warriors hung on the wall, and there was a wardrobe at the side which she guessed to be occupied with paperwork and royalty files.
Alaric took his seat on one of the arm chairs, and Madeline took quiet steps forward, standing before Alaric who seemed to be pondering over something in his head, his silver-gray colored eyes showing it. After an unknown minutes of silence, Alaric’s gaze finally shifted to the woman standing in front of him, and as if caught staring, Madeline instantly lowered her gaze.
"I know my actions must have disrespected your authorities but..."
"It’s okay." Alaric cut her off in a calm tone, surprising Madeline. "You don’t need to explain, I am a bit upset myself, but then I understand what you must be going through, and you must miss your husband after everything that has happened."
"This means you don’t suspect Cassian? How is he? Can I....can I see him?" She inquired in a concerned voice, hope returning to her eyes, but Alaric let out a breath and leaned forward, his hands clasped together as he met her steady gaze.
"You cannot see him." He said firmly, letting the hope in her eyes drop as her shoulders slumped, and her slim brows knitted in confusion and worry.
"I can’t see him? Why can’t I see him?" Madeline subconsciously swung her stick forward, nearly hitting Alaric if he hadn’t bent down his head on time to evade the unexpected strike, and Madeline’s eyes widened at the motion of her hands, instinctively dropping the stick, and her hands flew to her mouth at the unintentional mistake she had done.
"I’m... I’m so sorry, my hands....they tend to slip." Madeline quickly apologized with a quick apologetic bow of her head, and Alaric, who hadn’t forgotten about the beating he received from her, felt a bit nervous when the stick came his way again, but then he shouldn’t show his fears to a woman.
"It’s okay, at least you’ve discarded it." His eyes followed where she had thrown the stick, and he shook that thought away, bringing them back to their earlier conversation. "As I was saying, Cassian is under tight security, and no one is allowed to see him."
He rose to his feet, "I had to come up with this decision for his own safety, I made sure his wounds were attended to in case you’re still concerned about that, and he’s fine now." He looked at Madeline who’s eyes closed in relief upon hearing his wound had been treated, and when she opened them up, Alaric continued.
"The thing is, Cas and I came up with another plan last night, and I had no intention of telling you about it. The truth is, he doesn’t want you to get involved with any of this case as it’ll get tougher on the way, but seeing you stand up for him alone, despite the consequences you trigger to yourself, I don’t know, I just.... felt the need to let you know what is going on."
Alaric had his suspicions after seeing what Cas had become, but after the conversation they had last night when the royal physician showed up to get him treated, they had a lot to talk about regarding what he was, but Cassian was only concerned about his wife, asking if she had got home safe, and now, his wife is here, taking great measures to see him.
Could he say he was touched by the pure love and care between them?
"Don’t listen to Cassian, he proves tough but can be an emotional fool sometimes. I want to see him, help me see him, I promise I won’t take long, just a few minutes to see if he’s alright." She pleaded, her big eyes blackmailing Alaric who found it difficult to say no to such an adorable face.
And besides, he was sure that stubborn lad would be eager to know his wife came to check on him.
"Alright, fine." He agreed, looking at the young woman with a harmless smile.
Madeline’s eyes lit up at his approval, and she clapped her hands in a gesture to her happiness. Alaric moved closer to her and suddenly leaned forward.
"But there’s one more thing." He whispered, making the expression on Madeline’s face seize for a second, and her brows creased dubiously.
"What?"
"Can you pose as a guard? I mean as a male guard?"
