Chapter 173: Encounter In The Courtroom (2)

Madeline’s appearance made everyone’s jaw drop in astonishment as she stepped into the courtroom, the foot of her heels clicking softly against the hard floor. As nervous as she felt doing this, Madeline knew it was necessary if she needed to solve the case at hand, and most importantly, check on Cassian and figure out how well he’s doing.

Her midnight black hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, accentuating the delicate features of her youthful face. She wore a pair of round gold-rimmed glasses hanging from a chain around her neck. For a moment, the council were mesmerized by the sight of the pretty woman in front of them, but then it clicked that no woman is allowed to enter the courtroom when an important meeting like this is held.

Alaric, who was still in a daze, recovered from his slight shock and rose from his seat. Madeline met his gaze and bowed her head in greeting, but before Alaric could question her motive for being here, she turned her attention to Klaus who met her dark orbs that gleamed with a hint of hidden annoyance.

"Women aren’t allowed in the courtroom." Klaus said in a cool tone, but Madeline’s lip twitched at his fake countenance.

"I don’t care, if you are free to break the rules of His Majesty, so can I." Madeline said simply, pointing her stick at Klaus who took a step back in order to avoid getting whipped by the long wooden stick that was accusingly being pointed at him.

"Have you no shame?" She began, already pissed after listening to Klaus speak badly about her innocent husband who is presently injured. "You put up silly rumors, accusing my husband for what he didn’t do. If it wasn’t for Cas, your sorry self would have been stolen and used for Fiend raising."

"Woman!" One of the councilmen rose to his feet, looking obviously displeased that a random woman would walk in on them, and refuses to be held accountable for her actions. "What are you doing?"

"Bringing justice for my husband." She answered, turning around to look at the disgruntled man, unfazed. "As much as you wish to yell out your contribution to this conversation that doesn’t concern you, please be reminded that this is also a courtroom so I suggest you keep your tone down to avoid offending His Majesty."

Madeline bowed her head politely, her tone sounding considerate, but it was also a big slap to the council’s face hearing a woman giving him orders on what he should and shouldn’t do.

"You...!"

"Where were we?" Consciously ignoring the council, Madeline turned her attention to Klaus who’s glaring eyes never left her, but what surprised him was how unaffected her gaze was when she looked him right in the eyes, instead, he saw pure determination and the power of a woman who was willing to fight for her husband.

"First, you dare to call my husband blind when he had an accident, trust me, I never forget those who try to instigate my husband." She pointed her stick at Klaus who was baffled, and he took another step back. "Did you ever consider asking what made him blind? Or how he got temporarily blind? Did you not bother to use the brains that were blessed upon you to find out he nearly lost his life in the process of getting to the truth?? But you knew how to accuse him? Right?"

Unable to hold it in, she whipped Klaus’s leg when he least expected it, eliciting an ’ouch!’ sound from him as he stood on one foot, clutching his hands to his raised knee that had been flogged by the mad woman in front of him.

"Are you nuts?" Perplexed, he couldn’t help but ask, but the answer he got was another stroke of cane from Madeline who watched him limp on one leg, and the rest of the council felt their faces turn pale seeing an ordinary woman mess with the son of someone who came from a high-esteemed background.

"Isn’t she the woman from...."

"I am Madeline Albert." Madeline humbly introduced herself to silence the mouth of the councils, all her nervousness and fears disappearing like the dews that vanish in the early day. "Daughter of the late Baron, and a wife to Cassian. That makes me Mrs Cassian, Your Majesty."

At that moment, two hefty-looking guards stepped into the courtroom, and Madeline immediately recognized the guards whom she had cornered and gave chase just so she could get in here and interrupt the meeting that was going on.

How did they locate her so quickly?

"I thought we warned you to stay away." One of the guards’ deep, heavy tone made Madeline take a step back, and Klaus, who was still dealing with the beating he had received, pointed a finger at Madeline.

"No doubt, you’re Cassian’s wife, the both of you obviously share the same madness." He hissed out when his back ached painfully, just how much strength did this little woman have to inflict this much on him? She looks so fragile, but he could see now that her physical appearance was just a disguise to deceive men.

"What are you doing? Get her out of here!" Ordered Klaus, and before the guards could get hold of Madeline, Alaric, who had been quiet and silently observed the scene in front of him, raised his hand.

"Let her be." Came the orders from Alaric, leaving everyone, including Madeline stunned. The guards halted, and Madeline turned to look at Alaric who rose from his seat at the podium, his cold gaze locked on Madeline as if silently pondering on something, but his lips showed no indication of saying anything concerning the situation anytime soon.

"Your Majesty! She’s a crazy woman, she should be thrown out of here." Klaus suggested, "she lacks mannerism and acts unlady-like, this is the first time a woman has dared to interrupt the official morning meeting, and actions need to be taken!"

"I don’t mind being punished." Answered Madeline whose words were nothing but sincere, "Whatever punishment you wish to throw at me, I’ll gladly accept, but you need to let me see my husband, I....I want to see him."

"Listen Woman, no one is allowed to see that monster." Uttered Klaus, "he’s not human and everyone knows it now, he’s a danger to Carmarthen, so instead, why don’t you prepare for his funeral and go..."

"Were you born without Zippers on your lips? You keep trying to belittle my presence by referring to me as a woman, but a woman is making a grown man like you tremble." Madeline made an attempt to lash him once more with her wooden stick, but stopped herself when he flinched back like an elephant that got frightened by the sight of an ant.

"Woman, do you know the gravity of what your actions could lead to?" An aging man asked, his tone sounding less harsh like the rest of the people present, and Madeline nodded her head, her lips pressed into a thin line.

"I’m very much aware, but I...I won’t hesitate to do it if it means I can prove my husband innocent. He’s not responsible for any of this! Yes, he’s a vampire, he had his own horrific experience during the case and was forced to become one out of his own will, but he never complained and still tries his best to solve the case, and instead of being supportive to the one who only thinks about the well-being of his people, everyone’s throwing accusations."

Madeline couldn’t hide how hurt she felt when she saw different accusations that were laced on Cassian, that alone was what boosted her confidence to come have this conversation with His Majesty today, cause any false allegations placed on Cassian would not be taken lightly by her.

"And the one responsible for spreading these rumors..." she looked at Klaus, unable to hide her disgust, "if Cassian is out of the way, you’ll be free to obtain his post, am I right?" She scoffed.

"Madeline." Alaric finally called her name, gaining the woman’s attention, and she bowed her head slightly, but what she heard next made her eyes widened.

"Come with me."
