Chapter 175: A New Male Guard (2)
Madeline stood tall and straight, perfectly dressed in a black bodyguard uniform with a sword strapped to her hip. The fabric of her shirt was stretched over her chest, hiding any indication of her gender, and to complete her dress up, a black helmet was handed to her, making it safer for her hair to stay hidden, and the young lady stood at attention in front of Alaric, demonstrating a salute, and then she broke into a smile.
"Is this how it feels to be a bodyguard?" She asked Alaric with great enthusiasm, feeling somewhat powerful in the bodyguard clothing she was putting on. What’s more fascinating, the bodyguard uniform came with a pair of equally black pants that added to her liking.
She had disguised herself as a male bodyguard to escort the King to Cassian’s private cell so she can finally see him.
Since his area was restricted, Alaric had to put up this charade by making Madeline dress as a bodyguard so she could use it as an opportunity to see her husband. It was the only option he could think of considering the fact that he was the one who brought the restricted rule, but breaking his own rules behind everyone else’s back sounded too much of an irony, an irony that had already begun.
Immediately, Madeline sealed her lips when two other strange guards suddenly joined them, their heads bowed in greeting as they paid His Majesty their respect. After exchanging a few conversations that were not to Madeline’s hearing, Alaric took the lead.
As they walked down the stone corridor with three of them flanking behind Alaric, Madeline’s dark orbs scanned the shadows for any signs of danger, trying her best to play the role of a fearless bodyguard. The torches on the walls cast a flickering light across the stone corridor, making her feel like they were walking through a never-ending tunnel.
She believed the area was indeed private because there was no sight of anyone here, except for the guards she ran into as they entered three specific doors that brought them here. From the way the guards at the door stared at her, Madeline knew she would have been named an imposter if Alaric’s presence hadn’t made them drop their guard.
After what felt like twenty minutes of walking, Madeline felt her energy return as they finally reached the cell, and one of the guards stepped forward to unlock the door with a heavy iron key.
Cassian laid on the mattress that had been kept for him, staring at the ceiling with a bored gaze, but when his ears twitched upon hearing the sounds of approaching footsteps, he closed his eyes briefly, barely having the strength to converse with anyone, but then the clanking of iron and the door opening told him that whoever was here clearly had the intention of ruining his peaceful sleep.
Opening his eyes, he turned his head to the side only to see Alaric stepping into his cell. He wasn’t surprised, but then another figure followed, wearing a bodyguard uniform that clearly looked big on him. Cassian had the wicked intention of laughing at the petite guard that walked in, but unfortunately, his abdomen would hurt each time he wanted to speak, talk more of laughing, so he didn’t dare.
Regardless of the situation, he was still curious about where the guard came from.
"Your Majesty." Cassian forced himself to sit up, keeping his gaze locked on Alaric and paying less attention to the next person who was at the point of jumping on him, but remembering Alaric and the two guards were still here, Madeline had to hold on to her patience and act as they had planned.
"How are you feeling?" Asked Alaric after using his eyes to take note of Cassian’s condition, and he shrugged.
"Not dead." Cassian’s response sounded blunt, and from his physical appearance, Madeline noted he was being taken care of despite being locked in a cell. He looked a bit weak, which was understandable since he received a severe stab, but his charms never seemed to fade even at his current state.
But if he’s being looked out for, why is he locked in a cell? Or was it just another one of Alaric’s tricks to make the people believe he was also against Cassian?
Once again, the young lad’s eyes shifted to the bodyguard standing beside Alaric. He studied the somewhat familiar guard before nodding his head almost imperceptibly. The guard on the other hand, had his head lowered, so the face was difficult for Cassian to steal a peek at.
Weird, why is he drawn to an ordinary guard???!
"That’s an improvement." Responded Alaric who gained Cas’s stolen attention once again. He wasn’t oblivious to Cassian’s gaze shifting to the guard beside him, and it made Alaric question just how strong their bond might be for him to sense his wife’s presence already.
"Anyway," Alaric proceeded to switch topics, "back to the main reason for my visit, I brought someone who would be in charge of your cell for the meantime. If you need anything, you’re free to ask him." He explained, pointing to the guard who stood beside him.
"I’ll leave your care in his hands."
"And you’re sure I won’t beat him up and escape with the keys?" Cas tilted his head to the side, not particularly sure why, but he wanted to give this timid-looking guard a little fright.
’Beat me up?’ Madeline’s eyes widened instantly, is he going to beat her up??
Alaric chuckled lightly, and Cassian found it suspicious. "I don’t think you can do that now, cause you would have done that earlier if it was your intention, but I have to leave now, I wish to say more but there’s very little time for that." He turned to look at the guard, "I’ll leave you with him, are you sure you can handle him?"
Madeline nodded her head in response, and Alaric smiled before handing her the keys to the cell. With her dainty hands stretched forward, Cassian’s eyes followed it, and he arched a brow, wondering what sort of bodyguard would have such smooth fragile skin and hands?
It only heightened his suspicions, and Alaric was a man filled with all sorts of unexpected plans.
Taking his leave, Alaric exited the cell with the two guards that accompanied him here, and all of a sudden, he stopped walking and flicked his wrist.
"Make sure no one visits the cell until orders are given."
"As his Majesty wishes." The two guards chorused politely.
A slow smile curved Alaric’s lips, and he walked out.
