Chapter 123: Peeking (1)

"Hold on." A voice interrupted Cassian, who’s eyes flickered with visible distaste after registering the owner of the voice. Releasing Jeremy’s hair from his grip, he turned around to see Klaus and a familiar tall looking man dressed in light brown uniform standing at the cell door, a look of displeasure dawning on his face as he scanned the confinement.

It was the sheriff.

He wore a worn leather stetson hat with a silver star glinting at the left side of his shirt pocket. His badge was polished and gleaming, and a bullwhip hung from his waist. His piercing gaze surveyed everything around him, conveying a sense of power and authority, and Orson, who had been standing mute, couldn’t help but release a silent sigh, feeling relieved that someone showed up on time to stop Cassian from committing a heinous crime.

"Do you want to kill him?" The sheriff, who was named Mr Maverick, stepped into the cell after taking note of Jeremy’s injured hands, and Cassian only lowered his head in greeting before firmly responding with an unwavering gaze.

"He tried to use force, I had no other choice but to put him in his place." He lied confidently, earning a look of disbelieving shock from Jeremy who shook his head at his outright lie. "You son of a bitch! That’s..."

"The Duke is here." Maverick didn’t hesitate to interrupt Jeremy, his gaze fixed on Cassian who tilted his head at the mention of the Duke. "Is he here to bail him out?"

"I’m not sure, but you’re not supposed to be here, remember?" The sheriff reminded him. "You have other things to worry about and that involves finding out where the missing people are, and who is responsible for it. His royal highness sent you a letter." He handed Cassian a brown envelope. "I got this from a guard since he couldn’t reach you, look into it and see if there’s a problem, leave the rest to me."

Klaus let out a scoff as he folded his arms. "His Highness must already feel tired waiting for answers, that should explain the letter. You’re taking too long and I must say, is this case too tough for you to handle?" As usual, Klaus always had something negative to say considering the case, but unfortunately for him, Cassian wasn’t the type of person who’d react to such a retort.

"If you knew what I knew, and faced experiences that would leave you buried underground, you’d chicken out of this case." Cassian’s voice sounded more audible in the silent cell, and his Amber-brown eyes that were visible against his mask flashed a silent warning. "Keep your mouth shut if you have nothing knowledgeable to contribute to this case." He seethed before looking at Maverick.

"I’ll look into the letter." Turning his attention to Orson, their eyes alone exchanged silent conversations that involved Orson reporting back to him on why the Duke showed up here.

Looking at Jeremy who was now staring at him with a subtle expression, Cassian turned away and walked out of the cell. Orson looked at Maverick and whispered a silent ’thank you’ to him before taking his leave as well.

With Maverick, Klaus and Jeremy remaining in the cell. Jeremy’s gaze narrowed into a suspicious slit. "Did Cas pay you to send someone to torture me? That masked lunatic literally shot both my palm! Was it my fault Cas’s wife tried to seduce me? All fingers are trying to point at me but no one’s saying anything about the hypocrite who was lusting after me."

"Do yourself a favor and speak the truth." Maverick’s stern tone caught Jeremy off guard. "Cas’s wife inhaled whatever content you gave to her, and she suffered from temporary paralysis. She could have died from it and I don’t see how a woman who would ’lust’ after you would so carelessly put her life in a critical condition."

"Wait...did you say she could have died??" Jeremy blinked in a daze, remembering Catherine who confirmed that the content on the bottle was harmless.

"There’s no escape for you, confess your crimes and save yourself from the dilemma." Was Klaus’s response before they stepped out of the confinement, and Jeremy’s gaze darkened at the thought of Catherine lying to him about the bottle’s content.

Returning to his home, Amadeus successfully brought the things that Cassian had requested from the mansion, and when Cassian tried to assist him in bringing them down from the carriage, he refused.

"Do not worry about all of this, you should check on Lady Madeline and see if she’s alright." Amadeus thoughtfully suggested, but Cassian rolled his eyes and still assisted as he carried the biggest box that was brought by the carriage.

"If I let you carry all of this, your bones will grow weaker and snap. I don’t have the money to treat you for the consequences we’ll both face."

As blunt as his response was, Amadeus had been by his side since his childhood to understand this was Cassian’s way of saying he was concerned, and he smiled as he watched Cassian go into the new house with the boxes.

A poor man certainly can’t afford a house like this.

After they had settled the loads into the house, Cassian informed Amadeus that he could stay in one of the vacant rooms he liked despite his refusal since he still saw himself as an ordinary Coachman.

"You endured my stubbornness right from my childhood. I made you chase me into the craziest places in the upper East quarters and put you through hell. Shouldn’t I reward you for always being there for me?"

"I..."

"You know I don’t take no for an answer, you can stay in one of the rooms across the hallway if you still feel uncomfortable, but I’m not letting you go back to that mansion. Remember, I don’t like sharing."

"You haven’t changed Lord Cassian." Amadeus commented with a sigh, but he finally agreed. "Thank you for your kindness."

"What about my kindness?" Elian stepped into the house, making both men turn to look at him. "Shouldn’t we discuss which room I’ll get to stay in?"

"You’re not important, pick a room yourself." Was Cassian’s blatant retort before he moved to the stairs to go check on his wife, and Elian froze as though his heart got crushed upon hearing the word ’unimportant’.

"He doesn’t mean most of the things he says." Amadeus comforted Elian who patted his chest lightly. "I’ll take you to your vacant room"

Reaching his room, Cassian opened the door and stepped in. Closing the door behind him, Cas’s eyes widened when he caught Madeline undressing, and the woman in turn, also paused when she heard the door close behind her.

Instinctively turning around with her cloth hugging her body, her eyes widened in half embarrassment after spotting Cassian, and the young lad quickly cleared his throat as he immediately turned around.

"I...I didn’t know.."

"It’s okay, I didn’t lock the door so this is my fault." Madeline caught him off as her cheeks turned red upon having Cassian see her in the middle of undressing.

"Carry on, I’ll stay like this until you finish dressing." He assured her.

"O...okay."

After confirming that the young lad had his back fully turned to her. Madeline continued to undress. Unbeknownst to her, the area Cassian had turned to, on the table was a small round mirror that was placed to the wall, and Cassian’s eyes widened when he saw Madeline take off her dress.
