Chapter 158: Lunar reckoning

Nyx walked quietly, making sure to count her footsteps. She reached where the other guards were, and quickly walked behind one of them, acting like she had been there all along.

Aegis knelt down beside Ace’s body. He touched it with his right hand, and whispered, "I am so sorry you died this way. I promise to fine whoever has done this to you, and make them pay!" He swore coldly.

Nyx tightened her lips, ’I will make you pay first before you even try to do anything!’

He slowly retracted his hand, and clenched his fists, his breath coming out in short, heavy gasps.

He slowly stood up, his eyes blazing with fury, "I promise to make anyone who finds out the person behind’s Ace’s death, the second in command," he said quietly.

There was a murmur among them, "I would also give him one third of the pack if he finds the cause of his death too."

Nyx raised her eyebrows, mischief sparkling in her eyes, "Hm, this is when I come in," she rubbed her hands together, cleared her throat, and walked to the front.

"I know who it might be," she replied confidently.

All eyes turned to look at her. She kept her head held high, "You see.. you do have enemies Aegis, how can you not reason far?"

Who can it be?" He grunted a question.

"Thorne."

Aegis’s eyes dimmed when he heard Thorne’s name.

"After all, he was the last person to cause a kind of commotion," she shrugged.

Aegis furrowed his brows, trying to put together everything. Thorne did cause some trouble for him but why would he come at Ace?

Nyx as if she heard his thoughts smiled, "If you are angry at the master, and can not get back at him, you maim the master’s favorite pet."

His furrowed brows smoothed out. It all made sense now!

"So Thorne is behind this!" He gritted his teeth, the veins on his face popping out.

"I disagree your majesty," one of the guards refuted, "Thorne would never do such a thing."

Nyx’s eyes widened, it was going as planned!

"What did you just say?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

He took in a deep breath, and exhaled deeply, "I said.. Thorne would never do such a thing. He might have had a small misunderstanding with you, but he would never kill someone just to prove his point."

"Are you challenging my authority here? He sneered.

"He is saying the truth, you know Thorne very well your majesty.. how can you just think of him as a murderer all of a sudden?" Another of the guards spoke up.

Nyx bent her head, trying so hard to surpress her smile.

Aegis squinted his eyes, "I will show you who the real leader is around here!" He roared.

"Bind them now! Take them to the Crimson Den!" He commanded.

A part of his guards moved away from the rest and formed a circle around the two who had spoken up.

"You will not touch them Aegis," one of them, Faunana growled.

Aegis and the rest of them, except Nyx were shaken.

"He is your King!" A guard cried.

"That does not matter right now, if he tries to act so cruelly, then we will have no choice but to depose you."

Aegis’s eyes widened in shock, "You will not do such a thing! I am your king, and I am the one in charge! I order you to take those two to the Crimson Den!"

Faunana, and the rest of the guards behind him drew out their swords, "You will have to go through us first!".

Nyx watched them with a pleased smirk on her face, "This could not get any better," she muttered to herself, and chuckled.

Aegis gritted his teeth, "You are biting more than you can chew!"

"So are you," he replied calmly.

Aegis furiously drew out his sword, "I will kill..."

"Aooouuu!" A haunting howl pierced the night’s air.

Everyone stopped in their tracks and listened. The howl grew louder as the wolf was trying to call out to other wolves.

’I am pretty sure that is Oberon!’ Nyx bit her lips.

Soon enough, the rest of them, except Nyx began to howl too.

Nyx quickly rushed out of the building to meet Oberon. Getting outside, she didn’t see Oberon, instead a blackish- grey wolf stood on top of the wall, howling as loud as it could.

Her eyes widened, "Oberon?"

Trotting steps could be heard, as wolves rushed in the direction of the howl.

"What is he doing? Who is he calling now?"

It kept howling, and wolves kept trotting in the direction of his howl, howling with it as they trotted to it.

Soon, the courtyard was filled with a pack of wolves, and more of them kept trotting in.

The full moon cast an eerie glow over the place. The moonlight’s rays fell on her causing a primal transformation.

As the moonlight ray caressed her skin, its silvery glow ignited a primal transformation. Her body began to shift, muscles lengthening, senses heightening. Her limbs morphed into sleek, furry hind limbs, her hands now paws. Her face elongated, nose flattening into a snout, teeth sharpening into razor-sharp fangs.

Her hair grew thicker, darker, and more luxurious, merging with the fur that now covered her arms and legs.

Her eyes, now burned with a feral yellow light, reflecting the moon’s influence.

With a fluid motion, she dropped to all fours, her new form embracing the night. She was now a wolf, her coat glistening in the moonlight.

A soft growl rumbled in her throat as she raised her muzzle to the sky, letting the lunar energy course through her veins.

She let out a loud howl. She trotted over to where Oberon was, and crouched beside him. The wolves all gathered below the wall, waiting for at least a signal.

He stopped howling, and growled lowly, waiting for the wolves inside the palace to come out.

He was ready, the battle could now begin.
