Chapter 61: Alliance with the West...
Noah POV
I stared at him for a moment, waiting for him to laugh and call my bluff or something else but he kept drinking his tea quietly, barely meeting my eyes.
"You do understand that this is my wedding, right?"
"I am aware, your majesty," he said curtly
"Then why should I be told to take another woman to wife when I just did. Isn’t that a bit cruel? Why should I give away my happiness just because of an alliance that will greatly benefit us,".
"So, you’re saying that marrying our princess is going to steal your joy from you?"
"Yes!" I replied immediately ignoring Reid who was trying to mind-link me.
It was preposterous of them to think I am going to cower to their unrealistic condition. I am going to have one Luna and that’s that. Slowly, the Beta rose to his feet, bowing his head slightly before me.
"We understand your agitation and all that is why we’ll give you two full moons to mull over this conversation and I hope by then you will reach a suitable decision,".
"My decision won’t change even if I have 12 Full moons to think about it. I am not going to...".
"Yes!" Reid drew closer to me suddenly interrupting me "We’ll mull over it and give a reply ASAP,".
"That’s more like it," The Beta smirked before he and his entourage walked out of the room.
Finally, we were alone. I turned to Reid, "What did you do that for? Why would you give him an impression that I will think about it? I’m married, Reid... incase you have forgotten,".
"And you think I don’t know that?" Reid hissed "But this is the West you’re dealing with. One false move is enough reason for them to go to war. I warned you about getting involved with them in the first place,".
"Our alliance with them is necessary. If we want to trade overseas, we would need to use their airspace, their water space and much more. It’s as simple as that," I said through gritted teeth.
"By marrying Selene, who’s someone else’s baby mama and doesn’t have a blood as pure as the princess, you insulted them,".
"What!" My blood was boiling with rage as I stared at Reid incredulously "How does my choice of woman be a disrespect to them. Are you fucking kidding me?"
"You have to do something, Noah..." Reid began to prance around the room.
"If keeping Selene by myside would cause me an alliance with the West, then so be it. I am not trading anyone, for her and this is the last time you’ll speak of her in that light,".
With that, I stormed out of the room. Ignoring a handful of Pack Elders that were huddled at one corner talking. Couldn’t they see how much light she has brought to me? Couldn’t they understand that I was much happier than I am now?
Seething with anger, I scanned the room, looking for Selene. She was the only one that could calm me and God knows, I needed it now more than ever. As I stood there tracing the room with my eyes to find her, someone came up to me.
"Your majesty, your father is requesting an audience with you,".
Sighing, I turned to the boy "What about?"
"I wouldn’t know," he stuttered with head still bowed.
I drew a long hiss as my eyes flitted to where my father was gazing at me quietly from the upper floor. My hands balled into a fist as I took the stairs two at a time. By this time, my dad had left where he was standing and had one into one of the empty rooms on the floor.
Tracing his scent, I knocked light on a door next to my office before I ushered myself in. As soon as I entered, my gaze landed on Selene who was standing in the center of the room with a blank look on her face.
"Hey," I rushed to her "Are you alright? Are you hurt? Did they do anything to you?"
"I’m fine," she said quietly.
"What a laugh!" My dad scoffed from where he was standing by the window, both hands behind his back "Why do you think we’ll hurt your wife?"
Pulling myself to my full height, I approached him, maintaining a couple of distance away from us "What exactly do you want from me, dad? Why is my wife in this room with the rest of you? This is our wedding for Moon’s sake. This is supposed to be my happiest day... why is everyone trying to spoil it for me?"
"We are not trying to spoil anything for you, son?" A grey-haired woman came closer to him "We’re just looking out for you and the reason your wife is here is because she made threatening remarks to your sister,".
"Threatening remarks?" Noah repeated "What did Nora do? Surely, she must have done something. Selene is not one to start a fight,".
"So, you’re going to believe her over me?" Xavier’s mom – Nora came to stand in front of me "You didn’t even wait to hear from me and you already believe that I am wrong?"
"Yes," I responded calmly "You all are making no effort to hide your air of disapprovals. Selene makes me happy and I want to be with her. Isn’t that enough proof that I truly want her? Why is no one happy for me?"
"When there is nothing to be happy for," Nora replied "You married my son’s wife, Noah... Of all places to look for love...".
"That’s enough!" My dad stomped his foot on the ground as he turned away from the window "If he insists, she makes him happy, we have no right to dispute that. Besides, Nora... you should have known better and handled the situation without reporting it to us,".
"But dad..." Nora whined
"I just wanted you to make an official introduction to us, son. I hope that is not too much to ask for,".
"I will dad," I sighed and reached for Selene’s hand "But not right now, I just need time alone with my wife. Perhaps later,".
My dad nodded silently and together I and Selene left the room. We dodged a few servants, entrusted the girls in the hands of their nanny before we finally sneaked out of the building and headed to the main building.
As I closed the heavy door of my room, Selene immediately fell on the bed and broke down in tears. I watched helpless from the door confused about what to do or what to say. This wasn’t close to the disaster I had envisioned yet barely 24 hours since my marriage, I’ve been asked to take in another woman and my family has in action proven that they weren’t in support of my marriage.
I crossed the room and sat on the space next to her.
"I’m sorry," I croaked "This isn’t what I expected. I swear my love and I’m so sorry that everything is happening this way,".
"Your family do not like me; Noah and they’re not trying to hide it. Gosh!" she rolled over and faced the ceiling, as her body shook with a dry laugh "What was I expecting. I look like some desperate hoe at this point or even a gold digger. Don’t you think?"
"Don’t say that, Selene," I sighed "Things will change eventually. I promise. I agree that they do not like you, maybe but that’s only because they’re yet to see how much of an amazing woman you are,".
"I was with your nephew for 7 years and in those 7 years, your family... especially my so-called mother-in-law regarded me with disdain. Never did she try to caution Xavier whenever he treated me badly. They all remained aloof and watched me suffer all forms of abuse from my supposed husband,".
"Selene, please..." I sighed. I didn’t want to talk about her failed marriage... today should be all about us.
"They gave their silent approvals whenever Xavier would show up at events with another woman other than me who was a life support to him every fucking month. They would turn their noses up and ignore me when I leave the house for an unavoidable event that needed me to be there and now my one shot of happiness, they still want to ruin it,".
"They won’t," I reached for her and pressed her to be side, rubbing her back gently "I swear to the moon no we’ll make this work. Seek, I love you Selene and I’ll do anything to make you happy,".
She moved away from me staring at me with tear-stained eyes "Do you really love me?"
"Yes," I nodded "With everything in me,".
"And you’ll do anything to prove that you love me?" she sniffed again.
"Yes," I reaffirmed "Ask for anything,".
"I want you to ask your sister to step down as the Leader of the Luna’s East Coalition. I am your wife and it’s only right that as the Lycan I rule alongside you,".
