Chapter 60: Marry two wives...

Noah POV

Something was wrong...

I could feel it, I could sense it... first, the sudden presence of the West at my wedding had come as a shocker to me. They rarely honoured invitations like that and I noticed that they had sent a Beta to me... an indication that the message was important.

"Do you know why they want to see me?" I asked under my breath to Reid.

"I have no idea, Your Majesty," he said sullenly and continued walking. He has been this way since I returned from my trip to Greyhound and had expressed my intention to marry Selene.

"Don’t tell me you’re still angry?" I sighed "C’mon, Reid... You’ve been on my neck all these years forcing me to get married... and now that I’m married, you don’t approve of who I choose as my Luna,".

"There are tons of women out there who are far better and more qualified to run the affairs of this kingdom with you perfectly... why Selene? The gratitude and benevolence you have shown her is enough... why did you take it a step further to marry her?"

"It’s called, love, Reid," I said quietly "You know I’ve been attracted to her for a while and that attraction grew into love. I truly love her. I swear by the moon,".

"Love?" he scoffed "You think you love her? You’ve been bewitched, your majesty. Selene Thorne is a cunning woman and I can’t understand why you cannot look beyond her beauty and see that she has a purpose... why..."

"That’s enough!" I said coldly interrupting him "Have you forgotten your place, Reid? That is the Luna you’re talking about. Just because I allow you free access to me all the time doesn’t mean you can disrespect my wife like that,".

"I wasn’t made your Beta to soothe your ego, Noah!" Reid chuckled coldly "Neither am I going to stop telling you the truth. Selene is a threat to us... your marriage to her is not going to sit with all the Lords who had high expectations that you were going to marry one of their daughters," he paused

"It’s not going to prosper us politically or socially not to mention, she has two children and is the former wife of your nephew... what will the Lords think about you? You think they would trust you with their wives or children... they’ll say if he could take his nephew’s wife, he can do anything,".

"It was all a coincidence. By the time I realized she was Xavier’s lost wife, I had deeply fallen in love with her. Besides, her decision to marry me was hers and wasn’t influenced as for the girls, they belong to Xavier. I am not going to play father to them as they already have a father,".

"And what will you do about the marriage proposal from the West? I think that’s exactly what they want to talk about,".

"I already rejected that months ago. I have no interest in taking a wife just because. I must love whomever it is I want to spend the rest of my life with. Don’t you agree,".

"It’s not that easy, your majesty," he sighed "They’ve just granted us access to their wealth reserves and marriage to the Lycan’s daughter was a way to get his assurance that they could trust you since they still had their reservations. This is not going to be good,".

One of the reasons I hated being a king is being told that all the decisions I make in life must be 100% for the greater good of my people and my kingdom. Alphas have it easy... they have the right to choose a mate but the life of a Lycan is different... marriage has purely been political right from the very beginning.

To secure your region and ensure that everyone lives in peace and abundance, you have to marry the daughter of your greatest ally and I’ve avoided that for a long time. I had managed to forge a good relationship with Kingdoms without using marriage as a binding tool.

Allying with the West had been a herculean and the most difficult job I had ever done as a King. For centuries, the West had closed off every form of trade between regions and had flourished just by themselves.

Somehow, I had been able to penetrate their tall walls and they had in return allowed me access to their natural and mineral resource... but they had insisted that I seal the alliance with a political marriage which I have successfully avoided for months until now.

I closed my eyes, as I tried to calm my frayed nerves. My mind strayed to Selene and a warm smile settled on my lips. At least, tonight I would finally be with her without fear or guilt.

"We can’t be sure, what the West wants. How about we go in and find out first?"

"As Your Majesty, pleases," Reid said and proceeded to open the door to the hall that held the West. As soon as my presence was announced, they all rose to their feet and bowed their heads in reverence.

"Please, as you are," I murmured warmly as I proceeded to take a seat close to the Beta. As soon as I settled in, I turned to him again with a smile...

"It’s such a pleasure to have you attend my wedding. You cannot imagine how surprised I was to see you,".

"The king was supposed to be here," The Beta said quietly "But he had urgent matters to attend to, hence he commanded that every member of his court attends. I believe you’re familiar with them?" The Beta waved his hands at the regal men all seated with a morose expression.

I let my gazes scan the faces of the men, I knew it was not possible that the King would send all his court but as I was not familiar with them, this was a ploy to also confirm that. The West were paranoid and didn’t joke with their security.

"My heart is filled with so much gratitude. I wish I could convey them to the King himself,".

The Beta didn’t say anything. He reached for the teacup in front of him and took a sip. I could see his eyes darting with deep thought while I gauged myself to be asked the worst of questions.

"Your Luna..." he finally broke the silence "Is she the same talked-about Economy adviser?"

"Yes," I said quietly "She was also with me at the last summit we held and spoke extensively about cutting costs and maximizing profits. She is one of the reasons why you allowed an alliance,".

"True," he nodded. "By the way, his majesty wants to know if she’s the reason why you kept rejecting the marriage proposal between Princess Tania and you?"

It was a trap... If I said yes... he would accuse me of rating a mere Alpha blood woman over a princess and could accuse me of trying to be ungrateful. If I said No, then I may be asked to marry her again. Rejecting a fourth proposal was as good as openly declaring war.

"Don’t tell me this is about the proposal I rejected the last time. I thought we were over it?"

"The king was disappointed at first and was willing to understand why you refused to accept the proposal especially as you have been single for a while but what he couldn’t understand was why you decided to go after your nephew’s...".

"That’s enough!" I slammed my hand on the table "I am sick and tired of hearing that line and I do not owe anyone an explanation for the woman I choose to marry. I will not seat her and listen to you question me on my choices. You can tell your king my words,".

"You’re too hasty, your majesty," the Beta sighed "It was not my intention to rile you up with my words. I apologize,".

Angry tremors coursed through my body as I fought the urge to walk out of the room. "Tell me, Beta... what is your intent? What words do you have for me from your king?"

"A lot," he said quietly "And I think you should sit and hear me out. If the King should hear that you nearly wanted to storm out of an auspicious gathering like this, I don’t think he would be pleased,".

Reid came up to me and whispered "Please return to your seat, your majesty...Let’s not escalate things,".

Gritting my teeth in frustration, I returned to my former position and dropped on the seat. "I am all ears, what does the king have to say to me,".

"Well, the king is aware that you’re bent on marrying a woman your love other than his proposal but the king is also bent on forging and strengthening our alliance through marriage, at such, he’s insisting you accept the proposal,".

I scoffed trying to hide the disdain that filled me "Are you purposely trying to rile me up? This is my wedding for moon’s sake. Why on earth would I need another wife when I am already married?"

The Beta reached for his cup of tea again and took a long sip.

"No one is saying that having one wife is the minimum requirement," he shrugged as he stared steadily at me.

It took me almost a minute to grasp the full intent of his words but when I did, my eyes widened with shock as I stared at him, trying to understand if he was serious about it.

"Is the King trying to ask me to marry two wives?"

"Well," he shrugged daintily "Why not?"
