Chapter 59: It’s a promise!
Selene POV
"I accept you, Selene Thorne, as my fated mate and Luna," Noah slipped the diamond-crusted ring on my finger.
It was my turn now... I could feel the sea of eyes watching us from the crowd...most especially, Noah’s side of the family. They were all tall, beautiful, stately and regal. And they carried themselves well.
Since they arrived at Moon Whispers a few days ago, I have been gripped with anxiety because they weren’t talking to me, so it was difficult to know if they were condemning me or not but I knew for sure that they weren’t happy with me.
Nora, Xavier’s mother flew in yesterday... after all, it was the wedding of her brother, so she was supposed to be here. We weren’t the best of friends before... and I’ve only met her a couple of times.
I knew she didn’t like me... I had seen the reservations in her eyes from the first day I was introduced as Xavier’s fated mate to her and I feel that the only reason she allowed our marriage was because it was essential. I didn’t have the kind of grace or capacity of the kind of woman they usually married.
Noah had assured me several times that his family had accepted the union wholeheartedly and that was how they were.
"We aren’t a big fan of all smiles and love," he had said yesterday "Don’t worry, everything will be fine, my love,".
I had thought so too... but standing in front of Noah and the joining priest in the presence of Lycans, Alphas and the entire pack, I knew I had made a mistake.
I knew no one... not even my children who looked beautiful in their little bridesmaid dress was in support of our wedding. Reid, Noah’s Beta wasn’t even bothering to show his clear disdain of me... I could see the heated looks every member of the pack was sending my way.
The only person in this room that was in support of our union was Noah himself. I could feel how happy he was. I could tell he had been looking forward to this day. Kurtis was right... Xavier’s last words kept ringing in my ears....
There was nothing I could do. The damage has been done. What is left for me to do now is to salvage the remnants of the damage. Turning to face Noah, I reached for the ring the moon priest offered to me and placed it on the tip of his ring finger.
"I, Selene Thorne accept you as my fated mate and Lycan. I promise to remain devoted to you all the days of my life," I slipped the finger onto his hand.
It was done... I was now Lycan Noah’s wife... King of the Moon Whispers. I was the Queen... Luna of the Moon Whispers and no one would take it away from me.
I and Noah weaved through the crowds, accepting the warm but fake congratulations of everyone in attendance.
"Congratulations, your majesty," A short burly man bowed reverently before Noah "My queen," he reached for my outstretched hand placing a kiss on the back of it "It’s such an honour to finally meet you. I’ve heard a lot of things about you,".
"This is Lord Burton... he’s one of the Generals of the Kingdom... I know you haven’t seen him but he’s in charge of our foreign affairs, hence he always travels," Noah introduced him.
"The pleasure is mine, Lord Burton," I said with a sweet smile "I hope the things you’ve heard about me are good things?"
"Well, words of how you brought our mighty King to his knees and dragged him to the altar. Good things, no?"
How bold of him? He was waging a war and a trap for me.
"Well," I smiled "The power of a woman is indeed unfathomable. Since I am retaining my position as the Economy advisor of the King’s cabinet, I’m sure we will see often. It was a pleasure talking to you,".
He didn’t say anything. He just bowed and then I tugged at Noah and we glided away.
"Pay no attention to Burton’s words," Noah said quietly "His constant dealings with foreigners made him that way,".
"Don’t worry, Noah," I chuckled "I know what I am up against. A lot of people didn’t like how I was favoured by you even before our wedding. Now, it’ll give them more reason to hate me,".
"Don’t say hate, Selene," he sighed "It’s a strong word. Fine! I agree that the suddenness of everything is overwhelming but soon everyone will forget about it and life will go back to how it was. I promise,".
"I hope so, but I’m not worried about it. All I need is you by my side,".
I reached up to him and placed a kiss on his lips, loving the way his hand circled my waist possessively as he returned the kiss.
Someone coughed behind us... then we came apart, it was Beta Reid.
"Alpha, could I borrow you for a moment? The envoys from the West are leaving but they’d like to pay their respect first,".
"Sure, come on honey, let’s go," Noah reached for my hand.
"No!" Reid said coldly "We only need you alone," he said, not before I saw his cold piercing glare directed at me.
It could only mean that they wanted to discuss something urgently and that was just a disguise so any listening ear would not take things out of context.
Noah turned to me, gazing at me tenderly "Will you be alone by yourself?" he asked.
"This is my home, don’t worry. I’ll be fine. I need to find the girls too and make sure they’re not stuffing themselves with sugar. Go ahead, hurry along," I winked at him and moved away before I melted under Reid’s hateful gaze.
I held my head high, as I passed by tables... ignoring the whisperings around me. I wanted to get out of here and leave but I wasn’t one to back out of a fight. I would stay until the end. After all, it was my wedding.
I picked out the scent of the girls and followed it until I got to the food hall. Immediately, I spotted them by the table with someone looming over them as they pointed excitedly at all the things they wanted.
Quickly I walked towards them wondering who they were with. As I reached them, the person turned and I froze as my gaze met Nora – Xavier’s mother. My footsteps receded but I continued towards them.
"Maeve, Vina! I’ve been looking all over the place for both of you. What are you doing here and..." I looked at their food tray "Isn’t that too much candy?"
"Grandma said we could have a little extra today," Vina pouted.
I raised my gaze to Nora who had remained quiet and was watching us with a blank expression.
"Sugar makes them hyperactive and today of all days, I need them to be on their best behaviour. I hope you understand,".
"A little extra won’t cause any harm," Nora said with a gentle raise of her brows "What are you so worried about by the way? This is a party... and in parties, people act out of character. It’s normal,".
I didn’t answer her... I collected the trays from the girls and divided the sweets into four equal parts. I returned three of the parts to the bowl and kept the remaining one for them before I asked them to find a table and eat.
"I’m sorry but I didn’t give them sweets until they were two and it was only because of the pressure but I promise you, you wouldn’t want to be near them when they’re hyperactive,".
"Fine!" she scoffed "It was nice seeing them after hearing so much about them from Xavier. I must commend you for raising them well. They’re well-mannered,".
"Thank you!" I said.
I was not going to apologize for not taking them for a visit the last time I was around Greyhound. For years, both her and Xavier’s father had turned a blind eye to everything. So, I didn’t owe her an apology.
We stood in silence as we watched the girls eat and banter. Maeve had changed dramatically since we left Greyhound. I had worried we would go back to the ’no talking zone’ but has been on her best behaviour since then. I wondered if it had to do with something that Xavier told her.
"What is your aim?" Nora suddenly broke the silence.
"My aim?" I refused to meet her gaze... I had it fixed on my children "I don’t understand,".
"Why would you choose to destroy my family this way. First, my son and now my brother. Is this your way of revenge because of all those years,".
"What years are you talking about?" I asked calmly.
"Don’t play fool, Selene Thorne. You know what I’m talking about,".
"I don’t," I turned to face her matching her cold gaze with mine "And you all need to come down from your high airs. Meeting Noah was purely coincidental and not some scheme. Not everyone is like your family,".
"What is that supposed to mean?" her eyes flashed dangerously.
"Anything you’d want to interpret it as, be my guest," I shrugged and turned away "The only reason why I am allowing any of you to be a part of the girls’ life is because of my benevolence. You lot don’t deserve to have grandkids but thank goddess you’re here, I want you to pass this on to the rest of the family..." I paused and turned to face her again.
"Now that I’m married to Noah, I wouldn’t sit back and watch if any of you tries to play on my intelligence or tries to make my marriage difficult like before. I am no longer that weak, orphaned girl from before... I am a mother; I am smarter and way wiser than I was not to mention that I am now the wife of a powerful man who loves me dearly. So, let everyone tread carefully,".
"Is that a threat?" a cold smile appeared on her lips.
"No!" I moved closer to her; thankful I was as tall as she was so we were on the same eye level "It’s a promise!"
