Chapter 54: Kill them all!!!

Selene POV

I watched as Xavier came to an abrupt halt with Maeve and Vina standing an arm’s length from him. My heart pounded with fright as I stared at their proximity to the intruders... they were closer than the rest of us. They and Xavier.

The dark, hairy wolves suddenly started trooping out. It felt like we’d just walked into a training ground and in less than a few minutes, we were surrounded, locked in from all sides by these intruders.

The rest of our pack huddled together whimpering with fear.

Of course, I’ve seen black wolves but there was something different about this lot and they all looked alike. The same stature, eyes, and small mannerisms... if these were rogue wolves, they were no ordinary ones.

I continued watching as the crowd of these strange animals suddenly parted and then strode someone in Xavier’s direction. He was slightly taller, bigger and different from the rest. When he got to Xavier, his eyes were cold.

"Xavier Steele? Why do you look surprised?" the animal scoffed.

"Displeased would be the words I’d use," Xavier retorted coolly "First you disrupt our run, you walk up to me and address me without my title? What gives you the audacity to think you can do that? And in my territory?"

"I see," the animal chuckled, strutting around Xavier "Proud as usual. Look around you, Xavier Steele... the odds are not in your favour. You’re outnumbered and even if you weren’t there’s no way you can match us,".

"You hide behind a mask to talk to me...what do you take me for?" Xavier taunted "Listen... ordinarily, I would have stopped to listen to your nonsense but tonight is very important to us and I don’t know who you are or what clan you’re from because you’re not a werewolf... but today is important for us,".

"Well, if you want to make it alive... you best talk to me politely... Xavier Steele... I am not a very patient person. Moving forward, for every question I ask and you answer me sarcastically, a random person here will die,".

Unease settled on Xavier’s shoulders and I could feel him trying to decide if he should take to heart what the animal just said. As he stood there contemplating... the animal in front of him raised its front paw and immediately, a shot rang out.

A sudden shriek pierced through the air and for a minute, everyone got disoriented. Some of our pack members tried to run into the bushes or run through the crowd of intruders and were gunned down without hesitation.

I could see panic in Xavier’s eyes and he ran to the animal, finally changing from his wolf form to his human form "Stop this nonsense now! How dare you shoot at innocent people?" he shouted.

Suddenly, the animal rose and stood on its hind leg, and stood in front of Xavier, eyes gleaming with mischief "I call the shots here and not you. I decide on who gets to live and who dies. I am in charge now,".

Xavier was shaking with anger and I knew that he couldn’t possibly make any good decision in that state. Thankfully, the clamoring had died down but I could spot a few dead people lying on the ground.

I searched the crowd again to where Maeve and Vina were and my heart skipped a beat at how unprotected they were. As I tried to move forward, Noah placed his paw on me to stop me. Surprised, I turned to him.

"What are you doing?" I questioned?"

"I should be asking you that," he retorted, his eyes flashing dangerously "I’ve sent for backup... for now we just have to devise a means to stall him,".

"That’s exactly what I’m trying to do," I said "You see how impatient Xavier has been so far, let me see if I can stall him a bit. Besides, they don’t look like us. They’re not Werefoxes either and, strangely, it has not bothered to change into its human form,".

"It’s too dangerous," Noah whispered "My men will arrive anytime soon,".

"Your men cannot overpower them even if they arrive...we don’t know the extent of their strength or the weapons with which they came. A few of our pack members are dead already... I must step in now,".

"Step in as what?" Noah fired back "You’re no longer Xavier’s Luna... why should you be bothered about...".

The cold look in my eyes must have caused him to stop talking because he immediately did. Drawing a long hiss, I crept forward until I reached Maeve and Vina.

"Move backwards," I mind-linked them.

Without arguing, they took several steps backwards. Satisfied that they had put a great distance between the strange animals and themselves... with me as their barrier, I called attention to myself.

"Hey... Mister..." I waved.

Its eyes left Xavier for a second and focused on me... I could feel it running its eyes up and down my length. It made me uncomfortable as if I were naked but I shrugged it aside, maintaining a bright smile.

"Selene..." It finally said as it walked over to me "Beautiful and ageless as usual,".

"Oh!" I chuckled pleasantly "I didn’t know we were acquainted. Where could we have met? At a party? A bar? Where?"

It didn’t say anything. It just continued watching me quietly. After a while, its gaze switched from me to Xavier and back to me again.

"You’re no longer mates?" I could feel the bafflement in his voice "Do you have a death wish? Do you know how dangerous it is to separate from your fated mate, especially with fates as unique and chaotic as yours..." he shook his head slightly "What a shame! But again, you’re werewolves... you’re radical,".

"You sound as if you’re not a wolf yourself," I pursued quietly "And I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of creature you are. Could you tell me?"

"Your husband..." his gaze flits to Xavier for the briefest second "Your ex-husband I mean... Made me,".

"I made you?" Xavier’s eyes widened with shock "What are you talking about?"

Instead of responding, it went back to join up with the rest of its followers and then faced us, its tone cold and steely...

"Xavier, kneel!" it said.

A gasp rippled through the crowd. Xavier’s eyebrow shot up as it regarded it silently...

"Why should I kneel? If you give me reasons enough... then maybe...".

"I warned you about using that tone with me, Xavier and if you don’t kneel, the death of your people will be in your hands. I’ll make sure that everyone here dies,".

Alarmed, I moved closer to it, trying to hide how my heart was pounding furiously in my chest.

"If it’s money you want or any order thing, we’d be more than glad to give that to you," I offered.

"I am not interested in your vain riches... All I want is for Xavier to kneel before me... and then I might consider not harming his people,".

"But you know it’s an eyesore for him to do that, especially with everyone here," I told him calmly "He’s the Alpha of the pack and at such...".

"And at such, what!" its voice rang out as I marched angrily towards me, its eyes gleaming with hatred "I don’t care what position he holds... if you want to be alive... alongside your children, you best do as I have said,".

My blood ran cold, and my face turned white as I turned to Xavier... how did it know so much about us... how did it know so much about our children and how was it able to figure out our divorce?

The only people who had been present on the day we rejected each other were the Alphas of the Regional Council. Could they be the ones behind this? That Alpha – the one who had caused so much ruckus... Alpha Mason! Was this his doing?

Was he trying to revenge? Then my mind went back to the conversation between Alpha Jared and Belinda the other day... but they didn’t hint at this... even though most of their conversation had been ambiguous. They didn’t mention this...

"Can you at least tell us who sent you?" I mustered up the courage to ask "And maybe an identity... we deserve that much,".

"Are you saying that Xavier won’t kneel before me?" its red eyes widened with amusement.

"No!" I said, raising my chin higher "I don’t know where you’re from... but it’s as good as asking the moon goddess to kneel before you... the only person the Alpha bows his head to in reverence is the Lycan King...Alphas don’t kneel... so..."

"So, you would rather your people die?" it chuckled.

"Tell us who sent you?" I ignored it, feeling a sudden burst of confidence "Don’t be a coward and hide that from us,".

"Well!" he smiled wickedly, you brought this on yourself.

Raising one of its hands, like how it did the other time when they shot at our pack members....I quickly rushed towards Maeve and Vina trapping them in my embrace as we huddled to the ground.

Suddenly, there was a loud noise as the air filled with arrows whizzing by...and, the unmistakable voice of Kurtis...

"Kill them all!"
