Chapter 55: Reject the moon goddess

Selene POV

Kurtis jumped up in front of Xavier passing him a weapon.

The air filled with clanging of weapons as Kurtis’s men filled the place. Kurtis came up to us again, panting wildly as he came up to me again with a large, burly man behind him.

"Follow my man and see if you can round up the rest of your people who are still alive, he’ll take you to a safe haven,".

My gaze went to Xavier who nodded lightly. At that moment, Noah, sidled up close to us, he had changed from his wolf form too.

"My men are around, you should do what he says too, dear,".

"But these people are not ordinary," I whined looking at the heated battle going on around us, also noticing for the first time that their leader seemed to have disappeared.

"Yes," Kurtis nodded his head "They’re magical creatures and can only be killed through the same method they were forged. I’ll give you the details later but first we must get the women and children to safety first,".

"What if the children can help?" I got closer to Xavier.

"No, go with Kurtis’s men. Lucius slipped off a while ago to round off a few of our soldiers with us, just go to the safe haven that has been prepared,".

"What if we go back to the pack house?" I asked looking at them strangely.

"They might be there waiting for you people too, just do as I have said and go with Kurtis’s men," Xavier pleaded.

By now, the girls have changed back to their human form and looked slightly perplexed. I gave one final look to Xavier and Noah then turned on my heels and followed after Kurtis’s men.

I must have paced a thousand times and barely slept a wink until the sun was up and there was still no sign of Xavier, Noah, Lucius, or Kurtis.

The safe haven was the place we had met with Kurtis the other day with Xavier and there were at least a thousand of soldiers crawling over the place, so even if there was an attack, our manpower was covered.

But with each minute that these men didn’t return, felt like torture to me. What did Kurtis mean when he said the creatures were formed with magic? And what did the other leader mean when he accused Xavier of being the reason for their existence?

"Mommy!" someone tugged at the hem of the gown I had on.

When I looked down, it was Maeve with tear streaks on both sides of her cheeks, it looked like she had been crying a while now.

"When will daddy be back?" Her voice trembled as she cried.

"I wouldn’t know dear," I said quietly lowering myself to face her "But I’m sure daddy is fine. Don’t worry, he’ll be back any moment now,".

"What if he doesn’t come back?" she sobbed "Those vile creatures looked strange to me. I was filled with so much fear as soon as I saw them and I thought for a moment that they were going to attack us and have us all killed,".

"He’ll come back, I promise," I drew her into my arms as I hugged her.

My heart was pounding erratically at Maeve’s words... if they had been afraid of that creature, then it could be one of the reasons why they had been so quiet back then. What was more, there was no warning of any sort. They weren’t able to see if something like this would happen.

Which was so unlike them.

"What if Daddy dies? On my birthday?" she wailed even louder while I tried my best to calm her down.

While I was still soothing her, a shadow fell on us. Alarmed, I scrambled to my feet with Maeve in my hand as I tried to put enough distance between me and the shadow but when I looked up, I sighed with relief. It was Noah.

Without another word, I rushed into his arms, tightening my hold around him.

"Thank the moon you’re save," I murmured, pressing deeper into his arms.

"I am baby," he chuckled warmly "But you have to be careful, I had a few injuries... nothing serious though, just minor,".

Immediately, I removed myself from his embrace and leaned back to check him. Truthfully, his sleeves were ripped and were used to tie the left side of his body which was stained with blood. Maeve had run ahead to meet with Xavier who was walking alongside Kurtis.

I watched as he scooped her into his arms and also Vina who has ran to meet him too. After they exchanged kisses and apologies, they started in my direction both he and Kurtis. The determined glint I saw in their eyes was an indication to me that they wanted to discuss something important.

When they drew close, Xavier gave me a forced smile.

"Can I speak to you for a second?" he said.

"S-Sure,’ I nodded looking from Noah back to him. I couldn’t help but notice the hostility simmering in the air between both men. After instructing the girls to behave, I followed after the men until we got to a tent. Now alone, Kurtis came close to me, his eyes shining with doubt.

"Is it true?" he asked me.

His gaze was so domineering that I could feel myself cowering under it. Forcing myself to look back at him, I looked from Xavier to him and vice versa.

"What is true?" I asked.

"That you rejected your mate to marry his uncle,"

My brows shot up at his description and my eyes flitted to Xavier who gave me a light shrug.

"The way you put it; one would think that I’ve just committed a heinous crime. This kind of relationship is not new in our world. Besides, I like him enough to want to be with him. I don’t think I and Xavier are compatible,".

He regarded me with suspicious before walking back to the empty seat in the room and drooped on it, cradling his head in his hand.

"I am not going to interfere in your matter but are you guys sure?" he rose his head and stared at me especially "When I first saw both of you, I thought you were the most compatible partner I have ever seen and the electric flying between you guys was so much that it was enough to dispel all the rumours I’ve heard. Then what could he have done so much that...".

"Why are you asking? I eyed him "My divorce from Xavier doesn’t affect you in any way,".

"It does," He exhaled "I’m willing to take you up on your offer from the other day. You think I will come and help you fight those vile creatures if I wasn’t going to get anything in return? C’mon, I don’t run charity,".

"You still haven’t told me how our divorce is going to affect that," I folded my hands looking at him.

"What if he suffers from a relapse of what happened when you died? Or you think we didn’t know?" he scoffed at the surprised look on my face "I wouldn’t want to be partners with someone that is weak and cannot get over his ex-wife. Aside from how annoying it is, it might affect our agreement,".

"That was back then, Alpha Kurtis," I gave him a cold smile "The birth of our children has made us independent from each other and so we can stay mile apart and not be married without anything happening to us. After all, we’ve been doing well before you came into the picture,".

"You shouldn’t be afraid, Kurtis," Xavier came forward "If I was so dependent on her, don’t you think it would have been hard for me to fight without her presence?"

Kurtis considered Xavier’s words for a few seconds before he exhaled and dropped back on the couch, he was seating.

"Fine! I’m going to take your word for it but at the first sign of weakness, I’m off," he said.

"There wouldn’t be except you betray me," Xavier said quietly "Now, tell me what is your second condition before you accept our offer,".

"Hold on!" I raised my hand "That question was it a condition?"

"Not exactly," Xavier shook his head "He know about our divorce and confronted me about it, so I told him,".

"Okay," I shrugged "So, what was the first condition?"

"That no one would know about our alliance and that to show he is willing to keep our friendship or alliance away from the world, he’s decided to allow some of his soldiers come to our pack for training and ours to his," Xavier explained to me.

"Like it would be like an exchange?"

"Yes," Xavier nodded.

"I plan to be very open with Xavier and I expect he’d do the same for me. I hate sneaky people... that’s why I never had anything to do with those damn foxes. They weren’t only sneaky but also didn’t keep to their words and I really want nothing from Xavier, because I’m equally wealthy...so, this would suffice,".

"Okay," I nodded "What’s the second condition?"

He gave Xavier a contemplating glance... it was almost as if he didn’t want to say what he had in mind. After a moment’s silence, and pacing the tent... he turned to face us again.

"You would reject the moon goddess and stop worshipping her,".
