Xavier POV

Selene didn’t show up.

I was trying not to let the smile I had on my face slip as I watched the girls teaching me how to tie a bow perfectly. She said she was going to hurry up and return, why was she taking so much time? This was nearly forty-five minutes since she left. I turned my gaze towards the door, hoping to hear her footsteps coming towards the girls’ bedroom but it was just the scuffles of servants and other people outside.

Since we returned, I haven’t stopped thinking about what she meant in our last conversation. Did she mean all those things she said? She had clearly stated that I was the father of the girls and that I was very much part of her life. Also, she had insinuated that she felt hemmed in being married to Noah and that only his death could redeem her.

"Daddy!" Maeve’s piercing tone reached me shaking me back to reality. She had a cross look on her face and her hands were folded across her chest as she glared at me "You were not listening to me. Did you even hear a word of what I said? Where did your mind go? She queried.

"Sorry my darling," I said soothingly "I was just trying to...".

"If you’re worried about Mommy showing up, just forget about it because she’ll never come," Vina said with a wide grin "Anytime she goes to see Noah, she spends hours there. Most times, she shows up after we’ve gone to bet while other times, it’s the next day. Do you know what all the maids are saying?" She leaned towards me her voice taking a conspiratory tone. Curious, I leaned towards her too. "They say that mom will soon be pregnant with another child. I’m hoping it’s a boy this time, having a sister is not the best thing..." She rolled her eyes at Maeve’s smirk.

My stomach knotted anxiously at the information. Noah had once let it slip unknown to him that he and Selene didn’t get a lot of action going on on that side. More than once, Selene herself had also said a similar thing. Plus, if Selene gives him a child and it turns out to be a boy, she’d be bound to him forever. Women were that way and it would kill my chance of reclaiming her from Noah.

"Girls," I faced my daughters "Would you like me and mommy to get back together like my big family?"

They shared a look before Maeve responded "You know that’s impossible, dad. If Mommy had wanted to leave Alpha Noah, she would have done so a long time ago. She didn’t leave when everyone was showing how much they hated her, when she had problems with his family or even with Beta Reid and everyone else in the pack. I don’t think she’ll go now,".

"I know," I ruffled their hair "Say, there’s a slight opportunity for us to be together as a family... would you like it? Do you think it’ll be a welcome idea and you could have other siblings too,".

"Yes Daddy!" they chorused giggling.

Since Selene wasn’t coming, I and the girls continued playing until they all dozed off. After tucking them in, I decided to go look for Selene but as I stepped out of the bedroom, I met Lucius leaning against the door frame outside of the room. He had a quiet look on his face, the kind he always had whenever he knew I was up to something.

"Lucius..." I chuckled nervously "You’re here?"

"Yeah," he pushed away from the wall "You need to check in with the pack doctor and also take your treatment for today. Is there any headway with Selene? Did you talk to your uncle about it? Did he agree and also while you were with her on the hill, did you remember to ask her about that man?"

"Relax man! That’s a lot of questions at once. Selene has agreed to do it, just that," I paused and craned my neck towards the doorway "When we came down, she was told that Noah wanted to see her so she left to him and hasn’t returned since then. Maybe I could just go check on her, see what’s still keeping her but she has agreed and also, we didn’t get to talk about any other thing and asking her questions like that would seem suspicious,".

"Well, something is going on with Selene even Kurtis confirmed it. He told me that moments before the fight started and stuff that the man told him that everything would be fine and also predicted that Noah would cheat on Selene. He seems to see things before they happen. Who knows... maybe he might have seen one or two things about you and may have the permanent solution to your constant weakness," Lucius said.

"Didn’t you hear him when he said that my wolf has lost a lot of energy and for me to gain them back, I need Selene for it? It’s no big deal, Lucius. I could take mugwort or whatever prescription the pack doctor gives me and I’ll be fine,".

"The man specifically said the treatment would only be for four days and it’s been three days already. Listen, I do not want to concern myself with what goes on between you and Selene but I wish you could push more. It’s your life at stake here and we need to return to Greyhound as soon as possible. We can’t leave the safekeeping all to Theo. The earlier she does this the better for you,".

I looked towards the corridor again hoping Selene would show up but there was no sign of her. If she isn’t here yet, it could only mean one thing...she was in bed with Noah again but I didn’t need to think about that. What I should be more concerned about now is how to win her over to me and convince her that I was a changed person. Previously, I’ve gone slowly, trying to win her over gently and not force anything on her but maybe that’s not the right way to go about things with Selene.

I have to prove to her that I love her so much and would do anything... absolutely anything for her to become my woman. "It’s late, let’s go back to our quarters. If she doesn’t come tonight then tomorrow morning I’ll go meet her myself,".

"Okay!" Lucius agreed and together we walked to my room. As he puttered around my room, trying to close the windows, check the heating and others, I sat on my bed looking for the best way to reveal what I had in mind to him.

"Selene asked me to take the girls with me to Greyhound!" I started hoping the information would provoke a reaction but he only shrugged and concentrated on mixing my night medicine for me. "She’s going to go into therapy with Noah, they’re trying to fix their marriage so they want to do all it takes,".

"So, she wants to dump the girls on you?" Lucius threw behind his shoulders. "So typical Selene!"

"Don’t see it like that," I said hastily "She’s only trying to protect them; besides, the girls would become heirs to Greyhound someday and since Vina is interested in learning how pack administration works, she could take the throne after I am gone,".

"You know that’s not going to work the way you want it. Already, the people are anxious for a new Luna. It is enough that you had to stay away for three years without proper communication with them but now that you’re back, finding another mate would help them know that you mean business. I’ve told you to forget about coming back together with Selene... she’s no longer the woman you fell in love with,".

"It’s my fault she changed, Lucius," I countered. The conversation would end in an argument, I could feel it. Just like thousands of conversations we always have about Selene ends. These days, it seems we cannot agree on anything regarding Selene. "When we were talking today, I could feel the longing in her voice as if she wanted us to be back together. I practically pushed her to my uncle...".

"No, you didn’t!" Lucius thundered. Noticing that his tone had gone a notch higher he took a deep breath and faced me "Selene knew exactly what she did when she married your uncle. If a woman leaves a man because she cheated on him, she doesn’t open her heart like that to anyone much less another family member of the same man who cheated on her. I tell you, Xavier... if you will listen to me, Selene is scheming something and both you and your uncle are her pawns. It’ll only be a matter of time before the truth reveals itself. You have to cut off from her entirely, let the children be your only link,".

Already feeling irritated that we were still having this conversation, I rolled my eyes and inhaled deeply. "Listen to me, Lucius... I know those three years with your taking care of the pack made you suspicious of everything and may have clouded your sense of judgement...".

"What!" Lucius’s eyes widened with shock "I am fine mentally, Xavier... I know what I am saying,".

"Selene is incapable of bringing hurt to anyone," I ignored his assertion. "She’s the victim here and she’s only trying to be extra careful. The girls needed a father figure in their lives and in our world, having a man beside you is protection which is what she did. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I know you may not agree...".

"Save it, Xavier!" Lucius scoffed "It’s useless talking to you anyways because you’ve allowed self-guilt and regret to mess up with your mind but just know this... it is my duty to protect you every fucking day and I would until there’s no life in me. No matter who wants to compromise your safety, I will not hesitate to take action. Goodnight and take your medicine," he slammed the cup on my bedside table before storming out of my room.
