Chapter 142: All of our dreams can come true, if you do well, Selene...

Narrator POV

Kragen’s eyes widened with shock as he regarded Selene.

She wasn’t afraid of him. Other creatures would be quaking at their knees if he had introduced himself to them but Selene was acting like she was having a field day and this was a normal thing. What was shocking was how she didn’t seem bothered. He watched as she groaned and gritted her teeth then hoisted herself to her feet with the help of a stick which was lying beside her. With blood dripping from her legs, she began to limp towards the opposite direction from where he was standing.

"Where are you going to now?" Kragen asked rolling his eyes.

"To look for a god that has real powers and not some wannabe, sissy-threatening gods without powers. If the Moon goddess wanted to send me some sort of redemption, couldn’t she have given me someone else and not you? If I were you, I would be ashamed of myself. Imagine amassing such power and not knowing what to do with it! Gosh!" she huffed and sneered "You’re better of a werewolf,".

Kragen stood with his mouth hung open as he watched her limp farther away from him with blood still dripping from her body. If he wasn’t a god himself, he would have sworn that she was human. Only humans had the guts to walk away from higher beings. Kragen huffed and started to follow after her, curious to know what she was up to. She hadn’t gone far when she crumbled to the ground and lay on it panting.

Kragen then came over and hovered over her. "Should I help you up? Have you gotten to your destination?" he mocked.

"Can you take me up to the peak of any hill that has a lot of rocks at the base of it?" Selene asked.

Now! Although Kragen was a clairvoyant, he couldn’t see the future with people who had fates like Selene. It was always blank, so he couldn’t tell what she wanted to truly do at the peak of the hill.

"Why? What do you want to go and do there?" he asked instead.

"What else?" Selene hissed "I’ll call on the moon goddess to send me a proper god and not you. And just before you argue and tell me that I am not important, need I remind you that I was spared from a crash... that’s enough evidence that me staying alive is important, so whoever wants me alive would do anything to make sure it stays that way. Now, please could you come help me?" she stretched her hands towards him.

After regarding her for a while, Kragen sighed and reached for her hand against his better judgment and in one quick swoop, he had her in his arms. A few minutes later, they arrived at the peak of the nearest hill before he dropped her. Selene smiled her thanks and looked down from where she was and moved closer to the tip so she was standing precariously at the edge.

"What do you think you’re doing? Step back from the edge, it’s too dangerous. Your leg could give way or anything," Kragen warned moving closer to her but Selene moved even closer. This time, she turned so she was facing him, with a satisfied smile on her face.

"It seems there’s no redemption for me, Kragen... if the king of the underworld wants to sit and fold his hands against my pain, I guess there’s nothing that even I could do to make him change his mind. Just like you stated, you could use your powers, you could make bargains...goddess knows I will jump into anything that will save my children but since it’s too late, I guess...".

"You don’t understand, Selene...the sacrifices that will be made, the debts which must be repaid for such an intervention...they are beyond your understanding. It’s risky business and I wouldn’t advise you to do it. You could lose everything,".

"Lose everything?" Selene cackled with amusement brimming in her eyes "It is you who do not understand, Kragen... I have nothing. These children were going to be that thing I would cherish and lay down my life for and if they’re gone, I might as well kiss goodbye to it all because it’s no use,".

"Fine! I know you’re in grief and I understand it Selene. You should step away from the edge and let’s talk about this. We could look for solutions you know... things that could fix it,". But Selene refused to budge, she knew it was just a means to get her away from the edge and as for Kragen, he was slowly seeing a way out of his predicament. A part of him didn’t want to take advantage of the situation but then they were both desperate so that seemed fair.

She slipped closer to the edge and lost her footing for a minute making Kragen tense up with fear but sighed in relief when he saw that she was safe. "Fine, if I must use my power to call back the dead, I cannot do it without taking something in return and not just that, it must benefit me in a way because this is like going against the law of nature and so... if you can agree and you must be quick about it. Even though they’ve passed, their spirits can be reclaimed,".

Selene’s eyes filled up with tears as she looked up at him with doubt "You...You could save her? Truly?"

A smile played on Kragen’s lips, though it was devoid of warmth "It’s what I do, Selene... I am a god but it is at a cost which would chill even your most feverish nightmares. But if getting back your children is your heart’s desire, I can grant it for you,".

Selene felt her head swimming, as the lingering pain in her lower abdomen returned with force, she could feel her womb clenching and she knew if she didn’t make a decision soon, the children might go for good. Her eyes turned dizzily as she considered Kragen’s words.

"May I know what kind of conditions will come with it?" Selene asked, "You don’t have to tell me the whole thing. You could just give me a hint so I can get a full grasp of what I’m going into,".

"I’m sorry, I cannot do that. It’s either you’re in or out. If you agree we’ll proceed and I’ll tell you all the conditions that come with it. What is it going to be, Selene?"

To defy the natural order in such a way, to pay whatever price he implied... was it too much to ask? Could I trust that everything will go the way I expect? But then, a fluttering kick resounded from her womb. Sign that the lives inside her were trying to let her know not to give up on them.

Gritting her teeth, she lifted her chin and met Kragen’s smouldering gaze with a fierceness of her own. "Do it," she hissed through the pain. "Whatever will be required of me... just save my children and while you’re it, let them not have the same fate as me,".

Kragen’s smile took on a sinister smirk that played on his lips before he finally gave her a small regal nod. "As you wish, Selene. Let it be known however that from the ashes of death itself, a new dread shall be forged and to give life... a life but be taken according to the order of life but..." Kragen paused dramatically "There’s a way you could go around it, Selene... Tell me, what do you wish most? Right now... what is your earnest wish... aside from your children being saved,".

Selene closed her eyes trying to answer his question. Nothing was coming to her mind. She didn’t think she had any dire wish... "I don’t think I have any except to bring my children back to life," she said.

"Selene!" Kragen chuckled "Your heart is filled with vengeance that even I can feel it. You wish to punish Xavier and his family and bring them hardship just like the one you’ve been through. And not just Xavier but his entire household. The bitterness of being left to your fate and denied access from being at the burial of your parents and them being aware of their son maltreating you is slowly seeping into your veins. Soon, it will consume you and the only thing you will think of is revenge,".

Selene looked surprised about the revelation, after a while she shrugged "You’re right, I have conceived ideas of revenge but you’re making it too tense. I will not do half of what you’re talking about,".

"Relax, Selene... I will not fault you or stop you. If not for anything, I agree too. When the goddess will not punish wrongdoings, it’s okay for us to take matters into our own hands and right wrongs. In the future, fate will play and you might be reunited with your husband, Xavier. I won’t interfere with whatever means you choose for your vengeance,".

"And the children?" Selene looked at him skeptically "What happens now?"

"You will carry them to term and if you fail to give me a life...someone who will die instead of you, I’ll have no other choice than to take yours. Whomever it will be, must have close relations with you and you must like the person in the least. I won’t say the choice is up to you, Selene..." Kragen smiled "Because you have no choice. In return, your children’s fate which is to die before birth will be sent to you and for you to change your fate, you must pass it on to someone else. If you can do this... you’ll pay me in full,".

"What do you stand to gain?" Selene wondered.

"I’ll get my form back... I wouldn’t need to borrow people’s appearance anymore. All of our dreams can come true, if you do well, Selene... all!"
