Chapter 141: Death is my redemption...
Narrator POV
Four years ago...
[Selene had just run away from Greyhound and had boarded a plane that would take her far away]
The plane shuddered violently as it began its descent. The air hostess was shouting something about using safety belts and jackets and the rest but Selene was busy fighting to maintain her balance coupled with the fact that everyone was shouting while she was being tossed about the plane’s cabin like a rag doll.
Somehow, she managed to grab one of the seats and held on tight as tears sipped into her lips, she didn’t notice she was even crying. All she ever wanted was to leave Xavier and raise the children alone far away from him and his cheating ass. She wanted to set herself free and be on her own. She wasn’t asking for too much, only a chance to be her own woman and to be the best version of a mom to her children.
Was this her punishment for leaving? For running away? For obliterating herself from the torture which has been going on for seven years? Didn’t the moon goddess see all the pains she had to go through all those years? Was love abuse? Was there no remedy for her ill fate?
"We’re preparing for an emergency landing please..." the voice of the pilot blared through the overheard speaker in the room but before the words finished from his mouth, the plane suddenly took another nosedive and started a quick descent towards the earth.
Then, everything went black.
~~~32 Hours Later~~~
Selene’s eyes fluttered open once more. As she lay facing the sky, she wondered if this was Wereheaven. If she had died and gone there. But why were there grasses here? She was told it was a beautiful place with beautiful plants and trees, not the ragged trees and shrubs she was seeing now. She closed her eyes, swallowing what was left of her parched throat.
She was so thirsty that she could drink an entire stream. She opened her eyes again and tried to remember where she was. Then like a flash, everything came back to her... she had been on a plane running away and it was about to crash. Immediately, her head swiveled from side to side expecting to see wreckage from the plane or other passengers but what greeted her was just tall grass and more scattered trees.
And since this didn’t look like heaven...she thought to herself – it could only mean that she was alive and that somehow, she had survived. Confusion and relief passed through her immediately as she struggled into a sitting position but just as she succeeded, a searing pain passed through her stomach straight to her heart. She groaned out and crumpled back to the ground, panting heavily.
"If I were you, I wouldn’t try moving too much,". A deep, voice spoke behind her. Immediately, she turned only to find a tall, imposing figure leaning on one of the trees behind her. Silver-colored hair framed his face with eyebrows arched towards her and this stranger resembled Xavier so much aside from the hair and his eyes which were amber and green. He looked younger than the ancient vibe he gave off.
Selene’s heart sank as she saw him. Was this Xavier? Did he follow her here and why was he dressed in disguise if this was him? "X-Xavier?" she stuttered gazing at him steadily.
"I am not your husband, Selene Thorne Steele!" the man pushed away from the tree and walked towards her "I am only taking his image since there’s no one here for me to use and it would be unfair given your state to use yours. Anyways, your body is still in the process of expelling the children in your womb," the stranger continued "The twins did not survive, I’m afraid... it’s even a miracle to manage to escape without harm and maybe... my interventions," he shrugged.
Selene was trying to follow what the man was saying. First from how he said he took on Xavier’s image and then the baby... Wait! Did she hear right? The words hung in the air as she ingested the enormity of what he just said. Her eyes went wide with a dawning, horrific realization.
"Wait! It’s more than one child I carry," she managed to sit up gritting her teeth against the pain that seized her again as she placed her hand on her flat stomach with her gaze still in her womb "I am carrying twins?" she asked again "How did you know? Are you a doctor or what?"
"No!" the stranger shook his head "My name is Fenrir Hellfang, King of the Underworld for all Mythical creatures but you Werewolves call me Kragen and I know you’re running away from your husband Selene when your fate clearly stated that you shouldn’t stay away from him and that you’re bound to him forever,".
"I would be long dead if Xavier knows I am with child," Selene countered "And is this why that plane went down? Did those people die because of me?" her voice shook as she asked.
"Don’t worry! They’re all fine except you. Search parties are scouring the entire forest looking for you, it’s only a matter of time before they find you and since you don’t want your husband to know about the baby, they’ll be long dead and out of your body before then. So, you can take your tiny secret to the grave,".
"No!" Selene rasped shaking her head desperately. "No, my children..." she touched her stomach "They can’t die... not after everything they’ve been through. It’s unfair,".
"You’re fortunate to have survived at all, Selene," Kragen said unmoved by the anguish she was displaying "You can always give birth to other children, as many as you want. Once you’re healed and you go back to your husband, by the first full moon, you’ll be strong enough to be with another child,".
"No!" Selene shrieked as tears streamed down her face "Not my children! Not like this, I can’t lose them. I don’t want to trade them for anything, you don’t understand and I still don’t want to go back to Xavier. I was well aware of the consequences before I fled but I’ve had it up to my neck. He abuses, and cheats on me; makes me feel less of myself as a woman and the only reason those search parties are out there looking for me is only because of Lucius – that’s his beta. Lucius has been the only one who has taken care of me since I married Xavier. He’s my best friend and..." she trailed off fighting back tears "I’m sad I have to put him through this but I had no other choice".
Kragen studied the woman and contemplated if he should tell her everything he saw. How desperate her husband had been when the search parties had told him that she wasn’t found and how he had fainted and currently was in a life-and-death situation. How his emotions, have transferred to her (unknowingly of course) a part of his strength and that she would never remain the same again.
But in the same vein, this was the perfect opportunity he had waited for all his life. This could be the chance to lift the curse on him and regain his true form. He could turn his fate with the fate of Selene and if he succeeded, then Selene could live her normal life and he too would get back his form. He was already tired of constantly using people’s forms. The mental draining that came from that alone...
"Listen Selene... I know you think your fate is ordinary and just an old wives’ tale but it’s serious. You are supposed to be dead!" he said fiercely and paused to make sure the words sank into her skull before he continued "You’re not supposed to be apart from your partner within the confines of the pack. Still, you’re far away from him. Somehow, your life has been spared and maybe another chance has been given to you too,".
"I am not interested in all of this talk, Kragen," Selene glared at him "Just save my children... I cannot lose them. If they’re going to die then you’d better kill me because what will I live for. These children," she touched her stomach "Are the reason I made a move in the last seven years. They gave me the courage to leave and live and now you want to take them away from me? Just kill me!"
"You talk as if dying is easy and such a good thing," Kragen scoffed "You think to this...".
"Death is my redemption!" Selene finished for him "Kragen... dying is my redemption and I’ll die if I lose my children. I don’t have parents, the only person close to me is Lucius and I’m sure he’ll get by somehow. I have nothing to lose,".
Slowly, imposingly, Kragen lowered himself to one knee beside Selene. His penetrating stare boring into her soul. He pointed his index finger towards Selene’s abdomen and twirled causing a blue light to emanate from the tips.
"Your children..." he straightened with a satisfied smile on his face "Are already dead and their spirit would soon pass through the veil... You do not own me, Selene Thorne!" Kragen’s voice took on a thundering fierce tone which didn’t make Selene flinch as she continued to hold his gaze "I am the king of death... I determine who dies and who does not. So... You only take what I give you!"
Selene scoffed "Sounds like what a coward will do!"
