Chapter 127: The hatred you harbour against Noah...
Selene POV
"The girls..." Xavier managed to squeak in his weak form "We have to get them,".
Kurtis nodded and turned to me "Do you have any idea where or who they might be with?" he must have noticed how dazed I was by the whole thing because, in the next instant, he pulled me to him and palmed my face in his had "Listen, Selene, I know this is overwhelming and stuff but this is no time no space out. We cannot afford that right now. I want you to think... Do you know where they might be or who they might be with?"
"Th...Their Nannies," I stuttered snapping out of it "They might be with their nannies. They’re the only ones authorized to stay with the girls and they’re the ones who can..." The words barely left my lips when Faustina and Brenna walked up to us laughing at something they said. They both had laundry baskets balanced on their hips and stopped short when they saw us.
I pushed past the men and ran to them, turning them backwards "Where are the girls?" I asked staring at them. My heart was already racing at this point.
"They..." Brenna’s eyes hovered over each of us as she trailed off pointing to the open room "They should be in their rooms. That was where we left them yesterday. We just clocked in a few minutes ago but went to pick up their things from the laundry room," she said raising the laundry basket to me.
"They’re not in their rooms!" I swallowed hard as I felt my heart dropped to my stomach. I staggered back into the room and started searching the bathroom, their closets, under the bed. As I searched, I could feel everyone looking at me but I didn’t care. "Maybe they’re hiding," I said with a smile trying to fight hysterics. "Vina? Maeve? Girls? Where are you?" I called out my voice rising in pitch.
"Selene!" Kurtis tried to intervene but I brushed past him out of the room into the hallway again looking wildly in both directions hoping that the girls would suddenly appear before me.
"Hey," I grabbed a passing maid, startling her "Have you seen Maeve and Vina?" the woman flinched staring at me with a hooded expression "The princesses of Moon Whisper," I added "Have you seen them anywhere? Maybe outside the pack house or in the kitchen or the playground?"
The maid’s eyes widened with fear "N...No, your majesty," she shook her head vigorously "I haven’t seen them but I’m sure they’re around here somewhere and...".
"Okay!" I let go of the woman’s hand, feeling the loud thudding of my pulse in my ears "I need to go look for them," I stated already heading for the stairs "They couldn’t have gone far right," I mused to myself refusing to notice the worried expressions the men were given me "Don’t worry, I’ll be right back,".
Kurtis left the group and hurried towards me catching my arm "Selene, please!" he sighed "I understand you’re worried about the twins but you are in no position to look for them, at least not like this. You know, why don’t you go with Lucius and I’ll go find the twins. We do not have a lot of time. Please...".
"A lot of time?" I scoffed "You think I care about my life? It’s worthless without my children. My babies are missing and you want me to go to a safe place? What if something has happened to them? What if Conrad has them or worse?" Dreadful scenarios whirled through my mind tightening my chest and making me gasp for air.
I stumbled and fell on Kurtis’s chest and immediately he held me "Selene, you have to calm down," he said soothingly "Nothing will happen to the girls, I promise you. They’re probably playing or somewhere and I’ll go look for them. You have my word, okay?"
"I can’t just wait!" I sobbed protesting wildly in his arms, trying to pull away but he held me firm "My babies – I have to look for them. They have this occasional fainting thing in situations like this. They might be somewhere lying unconscious. What if there’s a fire or worse?"
"Listen to reason, Selene," Lucius’s voice sounded from behind making me turn towards him.
Yes! Lucius was good at finding things. He is a better tracker than anyone and his success rate has always been good. Without thinking, I ran to him "You have to help me, please... can you go look for the girls, I beg you!"
"Selene!" he said soothingly "The girls will be found. If you go out yourself, you’re putting yourself at risk, running around the pack in this state would yield nothing and will make you easy prey. If it’s any consolation, I’ll take you and Xavier with me until we find a safe place to keep you all and then I’ll come back to Kurtis and together we will look for them,".
I opened my mouth to argue further but was cut off by a new voice, one I would recognize anywhere.
"Selene? What’s going on here?"
I whirled around at the sound of Kragen’s concerned rumble. His eyes widened with surprise as his eyes travelled the length of my body. He walked past the men and came to me "Why do you look so dishevelled? What’s going on?" he asked closing the distance between them with a frown on his brows.
"Kragen..." I stuttered. Why was he here? "Kragen, the girls... that-they’re gone," I choked out, blinking back terrified tears. "I can’t find them anywhere!"
His strong hands gripped my shoulders firmly as our gaze met "Hey," he gave me an easy smile "The girls are fine. I spotted them at the black ground and they’re in the car. I came to take you to a safe place, Selene, it doesn’t look good,".
Immediately, Kurtis drew close to me and yanked Kragen’s hands off me "Who are you?" he asked shoving me behind his back.
A small smile played on Kragen’s lips as he studied Kurtis "Ah, Selene! You have too many people who love you. You’re one big lucky Wolf and I’m jealous, ehhh..." his gaze left Kurtis until they settled on Xavier. I noticed his eyes flickered with confusion but disappeared after a few minutes.
"I know him," I told Kurtis coming to stand in between both men "He’s a friend and I trust him," I added then turned to Kragen "Can you take me and Xavier? He’s weak now and...".
"I will!" he agreed before I finished speaking "And you don’t have to come with us Lucius, I’ll take care of your Alpha. Meanwhile, I noticed that they took the Kings into that big hall, the easiest way to disarm them was to bring in the foxes and let them take up appearances of King Tanner just to buy time. Don’t worry, Conrad’s plans will fall through. He’s not too much of a strategist!"
"Who are you?" Kurtis demanded.
"Tell your men to regroup and come back to the pack house, Conrad intends to take over the Packhouse by using dummy soldiers to attack the people because he knows how Noah is so much of a softie for his people. So, once they regroup, and look for a way to take care of the snipers... they’re good and then the soldiers are mercenaries, a little negotiation and a slightly higher payment with immediate effect will change their minds, believe me. Then take our Conrad,".
"Take out?" Kurtis arched a brow "Are you asking us to kill him?"
"Yes!" Kragen nodded tucking me under his arms as he held me gently "Else he won’t stop. Believe me, I meet people like him every day. So, when you get to the mercenary leader, they’ll call back their troops from all the packs too because that was Conrad’s plan. He threatens the kings with videos of the Packs in siege and then they cave in to his demands. So, that should take care of it. Be easy on Reid too... and try not to loop him in on any plan, he’ll tattle back to Conrad, he’s under a serious spell. They might also try to use him to kill Noah but you Lucius..." his gaze flitted to Lucius and he trailed off.
Silence reigned in the room as he stared at Lucius for more than five minutes until I nudged at him wondering what he was seeing now.
"Be careful, Lucius," he shook his head after a while "You have a good heart, fiercely loyal but don’t allow the hatred you harbour against Noah ruin you because it will but you should keep a close eye on Reid and make sure he doesn’t get to Noah,".
Then Kragen turned to Kurtis...
"It won’t work either...It takes a lot to pull people away from what gives them succour but it might work if everything aligns in your favour. You’re all wonderful men and the one thing y’all have in common is Selene, so I am assured that she’s in safe hands but for today... I’ll keep her safe. We’ll be back in an hour... take care and do what I asked you to do," he winked at them and in one swift motion swept me off my feet as we started for the stairs.
Thankfully Noah was not here... else, I would have had a lot of explanations to make..
