Chapter 126: A safe place...

Selene POV

I lay sprawled across my bed gazing at the ceiling.

I had overreacted, I knew that. There was a better way for me to go about everything instead of the way I did. Still, it was so refreshing to be able to stand up to my ex-mother-in-law in the way I did. Sighing, I rolled over to the other side of the bed and propped myself up on my elbows.

Try as I may, I couldn’t stop thinking about Xavier since last night. I was worried about him but also, I wanted to prove to Noah that I cared about him. If I couldn’t do these little things for him, he might become suspicious of me and that was what I wanted to avoid more than anything.

With Kragen coming to me some days ago, I knew he was tired of waiting. I had to meet his request or die and I didn’t want that. Not after everything I’ve been through. I deserve to live. I deserve to be a mother to my girls and watch them until they all achieve what they set their minds to. It is the men who need to suffer and not them. I was going to do it all on my own without their help.

A knock sounded on the door jerking me back to reality. "Come in," I said wearily and laid back on the bed. I heard the door open and then footsteps to where I was lying on the bed. "Faustina, is that you? How did it go last night? I hope you and your family stayed safe. Okay, I was thinking..." My eyelids fluttered open and my heart nearly flew out of my chest when I saw Xavier and Lucius’s face hovering over mine.

I scrambled from the bed into a sitting position as I turned to face both men stunned. Lucius was supporting Xavier who looked like he was going to fall at any moment. His lips were dry and cracked, his eyes were sunken and his face was white. Lucius had a bandage around his wrist and also a few bruises on his face and arms.

"W...What happened to both of you?" I asked eyeing them curiously. "Did you get into a fight or something? And shouldn’t you take him to the hospital, I don’t think he’s doing so well,".

"We didn’t miss our way to the hospital, Selene!" Lucius spoke up suddenly stunning me with the way he called my name without bothering with honorifics. "Xavier is your mate and he needs you to be fine now or else he’ll die. His hands and feet are cold. How can you even sit there and act like this doesn’t matter? It’s a miracle he made it through the night and...".

Xavier reached out for him and clasped his arm, indicating that he should stop. Then he turned weak eyes to me, "I’m sorry we badged in like this and everything but we’re just coming from Alpha Noah’s office and he has approved that you heal me. I know that is not enough because I still need your consent. I’m not fine, Selene... I can feel life slowly ebbing out of me. The treatments are useless and won’t work either. Please, if you have any space left in your heart for me... even if it’s a tiny, unused space, I’d appreciate it the more and you don’t have to be intimate with me, I just have to lie next to you and we’ll be fine. Also, it’s not right now. I think I’d be able to hold out until his majesty makes all the arrangements needed but I wanted to come here and tell you so it doesn’t take you unawares,".

"Noah agreed?" I eyed both men suspiciously "Well, it’s a good thing but did you ask them to brew mugwort or some of those fruits you used to give me back then whenever I was weak. Don’t worry, you’ll...".

"For moon’s sake, Selene!" Lucius roared as he glared at me disbelievingly "Why are you acting this way? Do you need it spelt out to you that he needs your help and not some juice to be fine? I know you’ve heard your issues but he’s your mate for moon’s sake. Show some sympathy at least. Please!"

"I see you’ve gotten so used to me that you feel you can call me by my name well, newsflash darling, it’s Queen Selene now. Besides, how many times do I have to make it clear that I am no longer Xavier’s wife or mate? We rejected each other and severed our bonds. When two wolves do that, it means that they can no longer care about each other. I have a husband and a home now, so I am not comfortable sharing a bed with another man when I’m married,".

"I can’t believe this!" Lucius retorted and wanted to speak more until Xavier held his hand preventing him.

"Please Selene!" he begged looking at me soulfully "I know you don’t want me to die yet, please, I beg you. If there’s any way you could just help me out. Even if it’s for a few minutes, I’d appreciate but I won’t force it to. Although the King has given his permission, everything boils down to you,".

"Exactly," I nodded in agreement with him "Listen I’ll think about it okay but for now, you should seek other solutions and not just rely on me. I might do it or not. Noah hasn’t called me yet to inform me of anything. By the way, have you seen him?" I asked both men ignoring the painful stare Lucius had directed to me. I knew he was angry.

"We left the office something about going to take care of urgent issues," Xavier wheezed "Anyways, thank you so much, Selene and I hope to God that you’ll make good decisions in the end. Else that..." he trailed off with a sigh "I’ll just have to look for other solutions. No pressure,".

With that, he steered an angry Lucius towards the door. Lucius glanced back at me for the last time before they left the room, his eyes were filled with a lot of hidden messages but I didn’t care. There was a time when it was me in Xavier’s position and I was always told to go stay in the pack hospital until I recovered. Why were they acting like I was not entitled to pain too?

When they left the room, I picked up my phone to dial Noah’s number. It rang the first time but there was no response. And then the second time, he picked but I had the remove the phone from my ears as loud buzzing noises greeted me immediately. I removed the phone from my ears and held it far from me.

"Hello, Noah, are you there?"

There was no response. Instead, I heard the sound of people groaning in pain and whipping. I just kept staring at the phone, I didn’t know what to make of the noise I was hearing. While I was still trying to decipher it, my door suddenly opened forcefully and Kurtis ran in panting.

"Noah and the other kings have been apprehended by Conrad. I think we misunderstood why he wanted to hold that meeting yesterday. When it was the darkest, he slipped soldiers into Moon Whisper. They’re all over the place as we speak, Selene. I want you to go get the girls and Xavier, you need to move to safety,".

Everything he was saying was gibberish in my ears. Unable to respond to him, I raised my phone to him pointing, "I’ve been trying to get to Noah for a few minutes now and he took the call but he isn’t saying anything,".

Kurtis collected the phone from my hand and immediately ended the call. He was agitated. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that way. "That’s exactly what I’m telling you, Selene. We do not have time. Soldiers are already ransacking the lower villages and the men I deployed there are trying to fight as long as they can. They’re also in the Pack House as we speak and after they’ve locked up the Kings, who do you think they’ll come for next? You! of course. I don’t want to take chances,".

This looked like a familiar scene.

I nodded, unable to process everything he told me. I picked up my phone, grabbed my jacket and together both I and Kurtis exited my room. When I came out of the corridor, everything looked normal. People were going about their chores. For a moment, I wanted to doubt it but there was no reason and this was not a trap too. Kurtis wasn’t one to fake emotions, he was really worried.

When we arrived at the girl’s bedroom, I pushed the door open and stood frozen at the door when I realized that the girls were not in. On cue, Lucius and Xavier rounded the corner and came to us too.

"I saw some strange faces entering the pack house just now. They have masks on their faces," Lucius informed us as he drew near.

"Shit!" Kurtis exclaimed "We need to get them to a safe place. I don’t know where but anywhere outside here. Conrad is trying to seize power. I was on my way to meet Noah because he had requested, that I come, when I overheard him declaring himself the Lycan leader of the entire region and then soldiers swarming in and all that. I managed to escape but I’m sure I must have gotten on the radar of the snipers on the roof, so they might come for me soon,".
