Selene POV

"Mommy, something is not right!" Vina said for the umpteenth time since I came to their room today.

Their Nannies reached out to me last night saying that the girls have been gloomy. They refused to eat or drink and they were worried. Since I was tired last night and with the entire fiasco of things that happened, I didn’t want to go to the girls, especially after speaking with Kragen.

So, I waited until this morning. I insisted on grooming them this morning and they haven’t stopped singing into my ears that something is not right.

"Everything will be fine darling, I promise," I ruffled her hair kissing her on the forehead. "Mommy is here and also daddy,".

"I’m just scared that something will happen to Daddy," Maeve sobbed leaning into my arms "I can’t explain it but I feel that something terrible will happen to him. Please tell Daddy to be careful, especially today,".

"Of course, dear," I nodded with a bright smile that didn’t reach my heart. Wondering if the dream I had last night was related to what she was saying. Last night, I had a dream that Moon Whisper was attacked. I saw a lot of injured people, including Reid and Noah but I couldn’t find Xavier and it was as if I had been looking for him desperately in that dream. Plus, there was this sense of foreboding that lingered as I searched. As though something would happen if I didn’t find him.

I had wanted to reach out to Xavier since I woke up but I didn’t want him to get the wrong ideas. These days, it was becoming increasingly difficult to be around him. Whenever we met, Bea would be so excited and would be pushing for a hug. I’ve had to use all my willpower to stop myself from latching onto him. But I was going to reach out to him later on, maybe through Kurtis.

"Could you finish up with the girls?" I turned to the nannies "I’ll come back, I need to go talk to Alpha Xavier,".

I gave the girls one last reassuring smile and kisses on their foreheads before I left the room and started towards Kurtis’s office. I was going to ask Kurtis to call him. I knocked quietly on his office door before letting myself in. I found Kurtis sitting behind his desk in his office. His face was drained of colour and he had this aura of weakness surrounding him. My brows furrowed with concern as I rushed to his side immediately.

I kept telling myself that I would reach out and tell him what Kragen asked him to do but somehow, it kept slipping off my mind. "Kurtis, how are you today? How are you feeling?" I asked gently placing my palm on his forehead.

His eyes which were closed a while ago, shot open and flickered with recognition when he saw me. He sat up on his chair. "Selene?"

"Hi!" I gave him a bright smile "How are you feeling today?" I repeated.

"I’m fine," he insisted, making an obvious attempt to school his features into a more composed expression, even though his voice lacked its usual strength. I knew he wasn’t doing well but Kurtis being Kurtis would rather die than admit that he was sick.

"I was supposed to have told you this yesterday but we were too busy. Tonight, when the dark moon reaches its peak, you should go for a run in your wolf form. The energy from the moon will help you expel the remnants of the poison from your system and you’ll be able to regain energy,".

Kurtis’s eyes widened at my words "Poison?" he frowned deeply. "From where? I wasn’t poisoned. Besides, who would dare try to poison me? and I was told that you were the one who practically saved my life. How did you know to give me this persimmon and why are you advising me to go for a run tonight?"

I opened my mouth to tell him everything but I knew I couldn’t. No one would believe me. I was desperate to tell my side of the story but until I achieved my goal, I didn’t think I had the right to say it out loud. After all, my life wasn’t mine yet. "Just make sure you do as I have told you. When the energy of the dark moon peaks, go out for a run," I said firmly "It’ll restore your strength,".

"But I don’t understand how I was poisoned," Kurtis shook his head confused "I am careful and I can almost boast that I am not invisible for someone to want to even poison me,".

I have no idea too, my dear Kurtis," I rolled my eyes "Let’s just move on to why I came here. First, have you been able to analyze the purse like you requested some days ago and do you think you can ask Xavier to come to your office too? There’s something I must tell him. The twins saw...".

The door to his office burst open and one of Kurtis’s guards hurried inside, panting. "Alpha!" he shouted but paused when he saw me. "Good morning your majesty, I didn’t know you’d be here. Alpha, there’s something I wish to report to you and it’s urgent,".

I could see my presence was stopping the guard from reporting to Kurtis. "I’ll just step out for a bit and come back when you’re done with him," I said turning to move towards the door.

"Don’t go!" Kurtis waves an impatient hand towards the guard. "Out with it already," he ordered the guard gruffly "Her majesty is no stranger and you know that,".

"Okay, Alpha!" he nodded and then straightened "I received words from our men stationed at sea that those ships we detected a few days ago just outside Moon Whisper Territory suddenly disappeared a few days later. They’ve returned and this time they’re disguised as merchant ships delivering supplies to Moon Whisper for the celebration. It was hard to pick out at first because of how much they’ve changed but thank God, we had the initiative to mark them specially, so we could tell,".

"Oh, goddess!" Kurtis’s face fell as he chuckled dryly "It seems something must have happened between Conrad and Noah after all and in his way, Conrad is trying to advance whatever plans he has. The purse," he turned to face me "I couldn’t get any conversation from the recording that could be of help to us. It was as if they knew and were being careful. I’ve been trying to figure out what Conrad’s intent would be and what he would benefit but I’m not coming up with anything,".

"You know, I thought of that too!" I nodded "What is Conrad’s main purpose of trying to bring all the Kings to Moon Whisper? What is he trying to achieve? If he wanted to make himself a King, he would have done so all along but he’s not doing that. And maybe... just maybe, what if he’s trying to do some sort of takeover? Maybe rule all the Lycan Kings of this region or something?"

Kurtis’s eyes glazed with confusion as he studied me silently. Just as he was about to respond, Noah strode into the room, his face set in a hard line. "Conrad is half siren, half werewolf," he stated without preamble.

My eyes widened in shock as I stared at Noah. I was going to ask him how he knew but it was Xavier who spoke up from where he’d just entered behind Noah. "That’s a weighty accusation, your majesty. What proof do you have of these allegations?"

Noah turned to Xavier; annoyance written boldly on his face "One of the Alphas who claim to know him... to be family with him confided in me. He said Conrad’s mother was a siren, which is where he gets his powers of persuasion and compulsion. I also think he used it on Reid, that’s why he’s been acting weird since his arrival,".

"I am guessing that this Alpha is Jared, right?" Xavier nodded "What did he want? You know he doesn’t give information like that without needing something in return. What agreement did you reach with him, Uncle?"

"The most important thing here is I was able to unravel Conrad’s intent. Isn’t that good enough for you, Xavier?" Noah fired back "And this is the last time I would talk to you about the way you disrespect me. Here, I am your King and you’re my subject,".

"I’m sorry, Your Majesty," Xavier said flatly "But you should know that Jared always goes for the highest bidder. The higher he’s able to get out of something, the easier it’ll be to be able to bend him. It’s not rocket science. It’s just who he is. He might have made a bargain with Conrad to feed you with lies and...".

"They’re not lies, Xavier," Kurtis interrupted struggling to push himself up from his chair "If he’s a part siren then it’s easy for him to use anyone to his advantage. He could even be using you right now but what’s important is before you came in, I and Selene were just talking about how he could be planning to take over all the Lycan Kings of this region...".

"That is exactly what Jared told me," Noah stopped him midsentence, "He said that Conrad wants to establish a one-state system where he would be the sole leader. He also said, he would charm everyone into accepting him,".

"If that’s what he wanted, then why did he come all the way to Moon Whisper?" Xavier countered.

"Goddess!" My eyes popped out of my head as the vision of my dreams started coming back to me. I noticed everyone had turned to look at me. "What if, he brought all the kings together to kill them all at once, seize power and appoint new Kings to their packs by himself?"
