Chapter 77: A Foolish Soldier (2)
Chapter 77: A Foolish Soldier (2)
Lucian didn’t want to believe him, but Richard showed him so much evidence. He wanted to talk more, but the soldiers had planted many bombs in City T.
He had little time to decide whether to believe Richard’s words or the military’s.
"You chose your cousins," Medeia guessed.
Lucian leaned against Medeia. "I chose my cousins."
He tried to convince his comrade to stop, but they wouldn’t listen. In the end, he had no choice but to kill his entire unit.
After that, Lucian helped Richard and the people of City T escape. But that made him a traitor. The military branded him as one of the dangerous mutants, a threat to society that needed to be eliminated immediately.
They sent soldiers after him, but Lucian was like a ghost. He moved from place to place every day, with different faces, and different names.
Eventually, after four years, the military gave up looking for him. When he heard that the general had died, Lucian stopped changing his appearance or faking his name.
"I don’t know if anyone’s still looking for me. But after seeing the Warstock base, I think the military has scattered."
Many things could happen in fifteen years. The world became dangerous and it was hard to control a large military force in a chaotic world.
In the end, people would begin to riot and become greedy. Therefore, Lucian guessed that the military force that hunted him didn’t exist anymore.
"Many soldiers probably built other bases, or maybe they decided to become bandits," Lucian rambled. "I don’t know."
Medeia moved his face to hers. "Who cares? The only thing you need to care about right now is yourself." She said, "Lucian, it wasn’t your fault."
"I know." Lucian smiled faintly. "Still, I was the one who killed them."
Medeia wasn’t an expert at comforting someone who was sad, but she couldn’t bear to see Lucian tormenting himself. So, she did the only thing that came to mind, staying by his side.
She reached out and gently placed her hand on his cheek. "You can’t change the past, that’s the truth," she said, "but you always have a chance to make things better, even if only a little."
He couldn’t bring the dead back to life, and he couldn’t apologize to the people he had killed.
That was why it was such a waste of time to dwell on the past.
In hell, Medeia had witnessed many sinners who regretted their wrongdoings and were tied too deeply to the past.
They never moved forward, trapped in an endless cycle of guilt and torment. Medeia had learned one thing from watching them: regret was a heavy chain, and the only way to be free was to let it go.
Medeia said, "You must try to forgive yourself."
Lucian held her hand, feeling a little better after venting his feelings to Medeia. "I’ll try." He smiled and whispered softly, "Am I disgusting you? My past is not something I am proud of."
Disgusted just because he killed people?
Come on, everyone must have killed someone at least once, right?
Or is it just Medeia?
"Oh, who cares about the past." Medeia waved her hand, her tone casual but sincere. "We all have skeletons in our closets, Lucian."
But if he looked into Medeia’s closets, he would be shocked to death.
Lucian stared at her. "You have a strange way of comforting people, do you know that?"
Medeia shrugged, leaning back slightly. "Maybe. But it works, doesn’t it?"
He let out a soft laugh and shook his head. "It does, sort of." Lucian took a deep breath before getting to his feet. "All right. I think I’m ready to make a bed now."
"Where are you going? We can just sleep here." Medeia held him down. "The floor is spacious, the scenery is beautiful. Just gather lots of blankets and we’ll be able to sleep without getting cold."
The office triggered him so much, so why would Medeia let him go back there?
Besides, if she felt cold, all she had to do was snuggle up to him, right?
Lucian shook his head but didn’t argue. Instead, he immediately gathered the pile of blankets and spread them on the floor. The room wasn’t exactly comfortable, but compared to the office that brought back bad memories, it wasn’t bad at all.
They lay down facing each other, the soft light of the lantern casting faint shadows across their faces. Medeia rested her head on her hand and watched Lucian’s expression change from tired to calm.
The room fell silent for a moment before Lucian spoke softly, "Good night, Medeia."
She gave him a sincere smile. "Good night, Lucian."

"I think we’re ready to go." Medeia looked down at the compass, ensuring the destination was right.
After considering various matters, Lucian told her to go to the Red Star base instead of the Warstock.
He said Ren needed a comfortable place to rest, so the Warstock was not the answer.
But the main reason was that Lucian didn’t want Medeia to go to that horrendous place alone. He knew that Harry and others would protect her, but Lucian would still feel uneasy if he wasn’t the one protecting her.
Medeia found him adorable when he acted protective like that. Hence, she happily listened to him without arguing.
"Are you sure you’ll be okay on your own?" asked Ren to Lucian. He looked guilty because he had left Lucian behind.
Lucian nodded, smiling brightly as if he hadn’t had a breakdown in Medeia’s embrace last night. "I’ll be fine. The road is not that dangerous after we leave the X-12 zone anyway."
"You can stay if you feel that bad." Medeia teased him, "You said you wanted to explore the world."
Ren immediately shook his head. "I do, but not now. Not alone."
Medeia ignored him, then handed Lucian a jar of beef jerky. "Here, you can take this with you. I can find more tasty food in the base."
"Thank you." Lucian stroked her hair gently. "Be careful, okay? I’ll be waiting for you in 48 hours."
Medeia hugged him briefly before running towards Tian and Ren. "See you later."
