Chapter 76: A Foolish Soldier (1)
For the first two years after the radiation hit the Arcion, information about the Lost was still confusing because the communication line was down.
People thought someone would become a mindless monster because of the unidentified virus. Many people panicked and tried to avoid contact with others.
If someone turned into a monster, their family would be shunned by everyone, or worse, burned alive to stop the spread of the virus.
"I told you about my brother Levi, right?" Lucian continued without waiting for Medeia to answer. "I didn’t know then that he became the Lost because his mind couldn’t cope with the wrecked world."
Lucian watched his brother slowly lose his light and smile, but he didn’t try too hard to cheer him up. He thought Levi would be fine once he adjusted to the new world, but in the end, he couldn’t.
He thought the virus was the reason he lost his brother and many people around him. So a year after the apocalypse, after chasing James, he joined the military to become a soldier.
"It wasn’t hard to join when I had tremendous abilities," Lucian said in a bitter tone. "They called me a ’valuable asset’. I thought I was doing the right thing, fighting for humanity, protecting what was left."
Medeia remained silent as she listened intently. They sat behind the door, side by side. Lucian faced forward, while Medeia fixed her gaze on him, watching the guilt slowly creep into his expression.
"They trained me faster than anyone else," Lucian continued. "Because of my abilities, they pushed me straight into the front lines and joined the special force."
Then one day the orders came. Clear out City J.
The General said it was infested and overrun with the virus. They said the people there had no chance of surviving the virus because there was no cure.
Therefore, the soldiers had to clear the city before they turned into mindless monsters.
Lucian’s hands clenched into fists. "And I believed them."
"When I got here, the people didn’t look like monsters. But I told myself the virus would soon turn them into monsters."
He and his comrade killed the people of City J without hesitation, following the orders drilled into them by the General. The cries for mercy, the desperate attempts to shield their children, and the pleas to let them live.
Lucian ignored them all because he felt it was necessary.
He was simply helping them die as humans, not monsters.
When he entered the supermarket, he found a father and daughter hiding in the office. The father was on his knees begging him not to kill his daughter. "But I still pulled the trigger"
He didn’t want to kill the kids, but what choice did he have? It would be more painful to see a kid turn into a mindless monster later.
Medeia hugged him from the side as she watched him struggle to speak. She finally knew the reason why his kindness wasn’t perfect.
The minus one was the epitome of his sins.
He had been lied to by the military. He was used as a killing machine by them without his knowledge.
It wasn’t his fault, but he was the one who pulled the trigger.
He was always kind to others who deserved it. Therefore, he had 99 points of kindness.
Unfortunately, he was mean to himself.
He hated himself for believing the lies, for following orders without checking the truth, and for being the instrument of destruction in so many cities.
The weight of his guilt was the anchor that kept him from reaching a full hundred points of kindness.
"Five months later, my comrade and I received a new order to destroy City T," Lucian said, "but I failed this time."
"When we reached the outskirts of the city, I saw Richard and his sisters there. I thought they had already gone, but they were alive." There was a hint of joy in his voice as he spoke of his cousins.
"I told them to go because I didn’t have the heart to kill my own family while they still looked human. But Richard refused to go and forced me to leave my comrades."
But the truth was that Richard had kidnapped him from the military. He didn’t want his cousin to continue to participate in mass murder.
Richard told Lucian that the military had lied to him. He said it wasn’t a virus that turned people into The Lost, but their own minds giving out under the strain of the broken world.
Lucian gritted his teeth. "The apocalypse didn’t just destroy the world, it destroyed people’s hope and their minds. When someone’s mind is completely shattered, their powers take over their body and turn them into a monster."
Of course, Lucian didn’t want to believe him at that time, because it meant that he had killed many innocent people in the last five months.
But Richard didn’t back down. He grabbed Lucian’s shoulders and forced him to look him in the eye. "The generals have lied to you, Lucian. If the virus really exists, why am I still alive and look like a human, even though I go in and out of this city without any protective gear?"
Lucian laughed bitterly. "No, it can’t be. Maybe you’re just lucky. Maybe ... maybe ..."
Oh, please, Lucian really hoped that Richard was a liar.
"Wake up, Lucian!" Richard slapped him so hard that his head spun around. "The military is lying to you! They need a way to keep the population under control!"
"It’s hard to predict how many people will become mindless monsters in the future, so the military decided to wipe out half the population to prevent more chaos!"
Lucian couldn’t believe what he was hearing. "How did you know that?"
"I have been monitoring military activities since last year. My sisters have taken many samples from the people you killed and none of them, I repeat, none of them have a virus as the military claimed."
Richard emphasized his words. "You have killed people who still have a chance to survive, Lucian."
