Chapter 60: First Tears

Medeia glanced at Orlon and Colton in turn. If she wanted to protect Lucian, she would have to fight both of them at the same time.

"Not on my watch!" Medeia tried to block the general, but Colton punched the side of her stomach, releasing the energy he had stored earlier.

Her body was thrown several meters away. Small pebbles scratched her skin, and the pain in her stomach left her unable to breathe for a few moments.

[Host, you devour 17 souls earlier. The total number of souls you have taken is now 25.]

[Do you want to use it to create Grade SSS+ artifacts?]

’Can I use it to increase the grade of my current weapon?’

[Yes, you can, Host! Which weapon do you want to upgrade?]

’Upgrade the Abyssal Sword.’

[Ding! Upgrading the Abyssal Sword from Grade-A to Grade-SSS+]

[Effect:

Abyssal Slash: Unleashes a powerful ranged slash infused with dark energy, hitting all enemies in a straight line up to 20 meters (Cooldown: 30 seconds).

Damage of 2,000 HP of each hit and stun the enemy for 120s.]

The blade became darker than before. A black aura surrounded the weapon, spreading to Medeia’s wrist.

Medeia tightened her grip on the hilt. Without wasting a second, Medeia immediately backed on her feet and ran toward Orlon, who was strangling Lucian’s neck.

He seemed to enjoy watching Lucian struggle for air. It seemed like he was looking at a mouse who was trying its best to live.

Orlon did not even kill him immediately, as if he could only be satisfied when he tortured his victim.

"I said don’t touch him!"

As Medeia embedded her sword into the ground, a wave of dark energy spread out, shattering the ground around her. The ground shook and a deafening roar echoed as the dark energy collided with the hard ground.

The shockwave sent debris flying in all directions, causing Orlon to accidentally release his grip on Lucian’s neck.

Medeia kicked Orlon’s body with all her might, sending him away from Lucian.

"Lucian, are you okay?" Medeia gently stroked his face, looking at the strangulation mark on his neck.

He coughed several times, growing weaker than before. His face was as white as paper and he couldn’t move his body without trembling.

Something was wrong.

Ren and Simon didn’t even get this weak when their abilities were gone. Harry looked a bit weak, but maybe it was because the soldiers had beaten him.

It seemed like Lucian’s body wasn’t able to survive if he lost his abilities.

"I’m fine." He smiled faintly. "I’m just... tired." Lucian’s eyelids slowly dropped. "I’m sorry for being a burden."

"You’re not a burden." Medeia cupped his face, trying to keep Lucian from closing his eyes. "Don’t worry. You will regain your abilities soon. Please, hold on."

"Enough playing." Orlon seemed to lose his patience and he knew the effect of his ability would be gone soon. He suddenly took a grenade from his vest and pulled out the pin.

Medeia widened her eyes. She thought Orlon was going to throw it to her, but he threw it to Colton instead.

What the ...

"He ... restored the power," Lucian reminded her.

Colton was able to restore the energy and blasted it twice as hard.

Boom!

The grenade exploded as soon as it touched Colton’s body. Despite the huge explosion, he was completely unharmed. His veins were bulging, yellowish light was flowing through his body, making Colton look like a time bomb that could explode at any moment.

Medeia’s heart pounded as she realized the danger. The Abyssal Sword might deflect physical attacks, but the explosion would be unstoppable.

Without a second thought, she grabbed Lucian and carried him on her back. She ran away as fast as she could before Colton released the explosion.

[Countdown: 00:02:00]

Why did time feel like an eternity?

Lucian should no longer be affected by Orlon’s ability now, but he didn’t seem to getting better.

Did his body need time to recover once his abilities had returned?

Before she could think about it further, Colton had sent a shockwave into the ground around them. The explosion was so big that it destroyed the car and shattered the ground.

Even with her enhanced reflexes, Medeia barely managed to dodge the blast.

The blast had injured her legs, causing her to fall and accidentally throw Lucian away.

She gritted her teeth and hit the ground with her fist again and again.

She was still too weak.

The demonic strength had improved her physical strength, but because of her low level, it wasn’t enough to defeat two Grade-S mutants.

What use would an advanced weapon be if she wasn’t strong enough to use it properly?

She tried to get up, but Colton had unleashed another blast at her.

Luckily, Medeia rolled her body in time before the blast hit her directly. However, the blast had a huge effect on her body.

[Warning: HP has decreased drastically]

[HP: 1,300/5,650 (-93%)]

[Host, if you’re hit by an explosion again, you’ll die as soon as your demonic strength is deactivated].

Medeia clicked her tongue. "I know."

But her health wasn’t her top priority right now. She turned her head and tried to look for Lucian.

His condition looked even worse than hers.

He was lying on the ground, covered in dust and stone fragments. His eyes were closed and he remained motionless.

Medeia’s heart sank when she saw Lucian’s still form. Ignoring the pain in her body, she crawled toward him, her hands trembling.

"Lucian!" she called. The tone of her voice was filled with fear and pain. She reached to his side and shook his shoulder gently. "Lucian, wake up! Please wake up!"

"He died? Just like that?" Orlon taunted him. "I thought he might last longer. Such a boring fight."

There was no answer. His body grew cold and his skin had grown alarmingly pale.

[Demonic Strength Deactivated]

[Cooldown: 07:00:00]

Medeia lost all her strength and the pain spread throughout her body. However, her physical pain was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.

Her vision blurred with tears as fear gripped her heart.

She didn’t cry when the demon king killed her.

She didn’t cry when the system sent her to a world full of monsters.

She hadn’t cried in so long, not since she stepped through the Gate of Hell. She had told herself that emotions were a weakness, that she had to keep them buried, locked away deep inside her heart.

But Lucian ...

His warmth, his kindness, his bright smile had changed something in her, made her believe that she could still feel.

Tears welled up in her eyes, rolling down her cheeks like a river.

"No ... no, no, no," she murmured, brushing the dust from his face. "You can’t die. Please wake up."

The world around her seemed to collapse. She couldn’t think of anything and didn’t care if she died or lived after this.

She laid her head on his chest to feel the remains of his warmth.

But suddenly she heard a faint heartbeat on his chest. It was faint, but it was there.

She wanted to scream with joy, but she decided to keep quiet because she didn’t want Orlon and Colton to know.

The faint heartbeat slowly but surely grew stronger.

All of a sudden, a large hand caressed the back of her head, followed by a soft voice. "Don’t cry."

Medeia immediately lifted her head to look at the familiar face smiling back at her. "I’m sorry for letting you fight and get hurt."

"You ... you are awake." The tears came out of her eyes more heavily. "You’re really awake ..."

Lucian wiped away his tears. "I am awake."

"General! I think he’s still alive!" The colonel’s voice made Medeia stop crying immediately.

She picked up her sword and tried to stand, but her injured legs couldn’t support her weight.

Lucian caught her body, wrapping one arm around her back and the other under her legs. "Thank you for protecting me before. Now let me take care of them for you."

Medeia held her breath as Lucian’s strong arms lifted her effortlessly, pulling her close to his chest.

Her whole body throbbed with pain, but his touch gave her a sense of comfort and made her forget the pain.

On the other side, Orlon knew that Lucian would be a pain in the ass as soon as he got his ability back.

He called through the base. "Units 10 and 11! Fire!"

Some of the spots on the wall suddenly opened, revealing countless hidden machine guns.

The sound of the machine guns filled the air. The bullets flew toward them, aiming to kill them both in a second.

Lucian didn’t do anything, just stayed where he was, as if he was going to let the soldiers kill him.

Orlon smiled, thinking he had given up. But his smile faded when the bullets stopped moving in the air before they touched Lucian and Medeia.

Lucian’s emerald eyes gleamed under the sun. The corner of his mouth turned up slightly. "You should have killed me sooner, General."
