Chapter 52: Cousins (1)

"Cousin, huh?" Medeia folded her hands. "Why didn’t you tell me about this important matter before?"

After Lucian gave them the token from his cousin, the hunters let the water truck enter the heart of the city.

"Because it’s ... a little complicated." Lucian stopped the engine when the car arrived at the Junk Garden base. "The rumors about him are too bad and disgusting, so I’m afraid you’ll find me as disgusting as him."

In other words, he disowned his own family because he didn’t want his crush to have a bad impression of him.

[He never said you were his crush, Host.]

’Shut up, just let me be happy.’

"How could you think that?" Medeia said confidently. "Disgusting never suited you, Lucian."

If anyone dared to call Lucian disgusting, Medeia would slap their face so hard they would forget their name.

Knock. Knock.

The tall man, Jose Toro, knocked on the car window to get Lucian’s attention. "Please follow me, sir."

His attitude toward Lucian had changed a hundred and eighty degrees. He became more polite and toned down his voice whenever he spoke to Lucian.

It seemed that Richard Black was a person he respected so much that he dared not misbehave in front of his family.

The Junk Garden used a seven-story hotel building as its base. The structure of the four-star hotel had been patched and repaired with scrap metal and debris.

The windows had been covered with planks and steel to strengthen the fortress. There were no remnants of the luxury of the old building, but it was luxury enough for the people of the Apocalypse.

The junkyard around the hotel was crowded with vehicles, makeshift carts, and people hauling supplies.

"Is your cousin really as scary as the rumors say?" Medeia whispered to Lucian.

Lucian opened the car door for her. "You can judge him by yourself."

As Medeia got out of the car, Tian and Simon walked toward her. Simon seemed a bit relaxed, but Tian had refused to let go of his rifle.

"Are you sure this isn’t a trap?" Tian looked at Lucian. "I never suspected you before, but after knowing that you are the leader’s cousin, I can’t trust you so easily."

Lucian exchanged glances with Medeia as if he wanted to say I told you so.

Tian must have heard a lot of bad news about Richard, so he had a bad impression of Lucian as well.

"You can wait outside if you like," Lucian said. "I’m not forcing you."

Tian paused for a moment, looking at Simon and Medeia, who seemed eager to enter the base. "I can’t let them go alone with you."

As they stepped through the heavy steel door of the hotel, the air around them suddenly changed. The air inside the building was clean and breathable, there wasn’t even any moss growing on the walls.

"You can take off your masks," Jose said as he took him as well. "The filtration system here keeps the spores out. It’s safe."

Lucian was the first to comply, followed by Medeia and the others. After smelling the fresh air, Medeia said, "You really have talent."

It never occurred to her that these scavengers were capable of creating such technology.

"Most of us are technicians or mechanics before the world ends." Jose shrugged. "It’s not that difficult to make something like this."

Medeia asked him, "If you’re capable of doing this, why don’t you help Stormclad build their base? That way you can get priority for water supplies."

"Our leader forbids us to help Stormclad build their fortress." Jose led them to the elevator in the corner of the room. "I never asked the reason, but I think I can guess it now."

Medeia guessed Richard probably knew James was the same person who had ruined Lucian’s life. But unfortunately, he couldn’t tell his cousin about that information because Lucian had traveled too far.

"The leader is on the top floor. He’s waiting for you." Jose opened the elevator door for them.

Simon couldn’t believe his eyes. "Elevator? Do you even have electricity here?"

Tian’s eyes widened when he saw the lights inside the elevator. "Un ... unbelievable."

They hadn’t seen electricity for years, so a single lamplight was enough to make them act like ancient men who had just seen a fire.

On the other hand, Lucian didn’t look surprised at all, as if it was a natural thing.

"Are there other places that use electricity?" asked Medeia to Lucian.

"Not many places have electricians, but yes, I have seen one or two places that have electricity," Lucian replied.

They went up to the seventh floor. The elevator wasn’t very stable and made a loud noise when it went up. Lucian held Medeia’s hand so she wouldn’t fall.

Ding!

When the elevator stopped on the seventh floor, the first thing Medeia saw was a lobby that looked different from the rest of the base. The floors were covered in marble, chandeliers hung from the ceiling.

Velvet armchairs and mahogany tables were neatly arranged for the guests or commonly used for the family room.

"What kind of heaven is this?" Medeia muttered. The scent of lavender filled the air, a contrast to the metallic and damp smell of the ruined city outside.

The room’s atmosphere reminded Medeia of her ex-husband’s concubine palace in hell.

Speaking of the concubines, there were five women sitting gracefully in the lobby. Each of them had beautiful faces, but for some reason, Medeia thought their faces had a bit of a resemblance to Lucian.

"Lucian!" one of them exclaimed as the elevator door opened. Five of them immediately stood up, rushing toward Lucian like a wave of fangirls.

"My handsome boy, what took you so long to come here?"

As soon as Lucian tried to take a step forward, the five women lunged at him, pulling him into a tight, suffocating group hug. Their shrill laughter filled the lobby, making Medeia have to cover her ears.
