Chapter 51: Junk Garden (2)

Before Medeia could roll the window down any further, it suddenly moved up in a second.

"That’s Devil Moss." Lucian explained, "It releases spores into the air, and if you inhale too many spores, you will feel dizzy and nauseous."

[Warning: Dangerous Plants Nearby!]

[Devil Moss Detected (Grade-D): Mutated Plants]

The system was really slow!

’Actually, who is the system? You or Lucian?’ Medeia complained in her mind.

[The system is fast enough, Host!]

Right. The system would never admit its error.

Medeia slowly backed away from the window. "The name is frightening, but the effect doesn’t seem so deadly."

Lucian shook his head. "It’s not deadly, but prolonged exposure can weaken the immune system and cause paralysis."

The moss was not enough to kill them, but it could paralyze them for life, which was worse than dying. That was why it was called Devil’s Moss, because it ensured that people who inhaled its spores would suffer for a long time.

The system chimed again in her head.

[Recommendation: Avoid prolonged exposure. Use protective gear if direct contact is necessary.]

Medeia rolled her eyes inwardly. Now you tell me, useless system, she thought. "If the moss is so dangerous, why did Junk Garden build a base here?"

"The moss is the reason why Junk Garden built the base here." Lucian slowed the car as they headed into the heart of the city. "They specialize in turning ’junk’ into valuable tools, weapons, and other survival items, so many people like bandits will target them at any time."

"Therefore, Richard deliberately lives in such a neighborhood so that he can easily ’clean’ the bandits."

Not everyone knew about the Devil Moss, so they underestimated the moss until they suddenly had trouble breathing and ended up experiencing temporary paralysis.

"You sure know a lot about it." Medeia watched the city from behind the window and finally realized something. "Lucian, don’t you think it’s too quiet here?"

Even though the city was covered in Devil’s Moss, shouldn’t Junk Garden’s hunters be patrolling the city to prevent bandits?

Beside that, the hunters should welcome their arrival, since the water tanker had a Stormclad emblem.

"They recognize every Stormclad face." His grip on the wheel tightened. "Get down."

[Warning: Danger Alert!]

Crash!

As Medeia lowered her head, a bullet pierced through the car window. Before it could hit Lucian’s head, the bullet stopped on its own and scattered into the dust.

[See, Host? The system is as fast as Lucian!]

’He warned me before you did.’ Medeia clicked her tongue. ’You should learn more from him.’

[...]

Lucian stopped the car as figures wearing gas masks emerged from behind the ruins. They aimed their rifles at the car, preventing them from escaping from any corner.

Inside the truck, Tian immediately grabbed his sniper rifles and hid them near his feet. His sharp eyes moved from one person to the other to see who would pull the trigger for the second time.

"Lucian is giving us a signal to do nothing," Simon said when he saw that Lucian had turned on the hazard light.

Tian frowned. "They almost shot Medeia and his head, but he told us to do nothing? That’s ridiculous."

Simon sighed and gripped the wheel tightly. "Maybe he has a plan. If we act rashly, it could make things worse."

Back in the jeep, Lucian handed Medeia a gas mask. "Stay close to me, okay?"

Medeia nodded quickly. "Okay."

With the gas mask on, they both stepped out of the car, slowly raising their hands. Lucian called out, "We’re here to deliver the water!"

A tall man, probably the one in charge of the group, stepped forward. He had an unshaven face and a sinister grin. "I know all the faces of the Stormclad, and none of you look familiar to me."

Lucian stood in front of Medeia, shielding her from the men’s gaze. "I didn’t say I was from the Stormclad."

The tall man knitted his eyebrows. "I see." He raised his gun and aimed it at Lucian’s forehead. "So you had robbed them in the streets. What do you think you’re doing? Using this stolen air as a bargaining chip?"

It looked like this wasn’t the first time they had encountered bandits who wanted to obtain goods from the Junk Garden with stolen goods.

However, no bandits were able to rob Stormclad. Besides, other alliances had sworn to protect Stormclad, so no one dared to mess with them.

Lucian smiled. "Don’t pretend like you care about them. Didn’t they monopolize the water by themselves and barely provide water for Junk Garden?"

Among the three alliances, Junk Garden was the one that suffered the most.

They only got half of the water ration, or sometimes had to wait for a month before the Stormclad sent the new supplies.

"They did that because the Stormclad leader was too stupid to understand your capabilities." Lucian stepped forward slowly. "Other people only know that you were scrap collectors in the past, but I know all of you have the skills to turn junk into something extraordinary."

"Stop right there." The tall man prepared to fire. "Who are you?"

Yeah, actually, Medeia was also confused here.

Why did Lucian have so much information about Junk Garden?

She knew he had traveled to a lot of places, but she didn’t expect him to know all of the information and gossip between alliances.

Medeia even had to pay a high price if she wanted to get information from the system.

’You know what, system. He is more useful than you. You should be ashamed of yourself!’

[There’s nothing wrong with the system, Host! Everyone needs money, including the system!]

What a capitalist.

"Tell your leader, the stormclad does not exist anymore after I killed their leader." His voice sounded confident, making Medeia suspicious that Lucian knew Richard all along.

The masked man stiffened as he heard that information. "Kill him? What do you mean by that?" He and the other hunters tensed up. "Who the fuck are you?!"

Lucian took something from his pocket, a pin shaped like half of a rusty gear. He threw it to the man in front of him.

The tall man was surprised as he saw it. "This... our leader also has a pin like this."

"Of course, he has it. He was the one who gave me that." Lucian ordered him, "Now move aside, I want to talk with my cousin."
