Chapter 1636: Chapter 1637: Heaven-reaching Ghost-killing Formation

The greenish light was formed by the intertwining of demon qi and nature’s spiritual energy. Though Su Chengyu and Bai Qiu faced some obstruction as they entered, it required only slight effort to break through, and Su Chengyu hadn’t even needed to invoke the power of his bloodline.

"The entrance has already been completely opened by Bai Huang. Apart from us, no one else underground should face any restrictions,"

Su Chengyu reminded Bai Qiu, who stood beside him.

Bai Qiu responded with a soft "mm," without further words, as she focused within the subterranean space to pinpoint Ao Tian’s location. She understood that finding Ao Tian would naturally lead them to Bai Huang and the others.

Realizing what Bai Qiu was doing, Su Chengyu refrained from rushing her. He knew this was the fastest way to locate Yu Yanshu and the others.

Unable to do much else during this critical juncture, Su Chengyu closed his eyes slightly, regulating his breathing to restore his energy, while contemplating external matters.

"Are you still worrying about that Daoist?"

Within his Sea of Consciousness, the Heaven-Mending Stone, having discerned Su Chengyu’s concern, spoke up.

"A little. Although Wan Qiu Daoist said as much, there’s still my master’s precedent..."

"So what if he dies? That guy’s entire life has no chance of entering the Earth Immortal realm. Even if Heaven’s Gate opens in the future, he won’t be able to leap through and ascend to the Immortal World."

"Must one ascend to the Immortal World just to live? Does ascending guarantee eternal life?"

Su Chengyu’s questioning made the Heaven-Mending Stone pause briefly, but it quickly countered, "Then what else? Cultivation seeks longevity. The lifespan of the Earth Immortal Realm is extended, but true immortality undeniably requires entering the Immortal World."

"People don’t die in the Immortal World?"

Su Chengyu retorted coldly.

Although the Heaven-Mending Stone rarely talked about the Immortal World, Su Chengyu could glean from their fragmented conversations what kind of cruel place the so-called Immortal World truly was.

That place would only be more dominated by survival of the fittest, and the Human Clan’s unique status there would make their plight even more difficult.

"Even so, that guy still dreams of becoming an Earth Immortal."

"It’s not the same,"

Su Chengyu calmly replied, as Wan Qiu Daoist’s figure surfaced in his mind. "When I left the capital, Master Chang Chun told me that Wan Qiu Daoist devoted his life to the Sword Dao. His skill might not make him the greatest contemporary swordsman, but his purity in the Sword Dao has no equal in Xia Country’s history."

"What are you trying to say, exactly?"

"Nothing much. I just want to express that for Wan Qiu Daoist, pursuing the Earth Immortal realm was merely part of his relentless quest in the Sword Dao. It had nothing to do with ascending to the Immortal World, or the so-called immortality."

"If cultivation isn’t for eternal life, then why cultivate at all?"

The Heaven-Mending Stone muttered disapprovingly, evidently dissatisfied with Su Chengyu’s perspective.

"That’s a question you would have to ask every individual, as each person’s desires differ,"

Su Chengyu replied calmly.

"What about you then? Why do you cultivate?"

The Heaven-Mending Stone directly shifted the focus to Su Chengyu.

"Obviously, to settle the past."

On this matter, Su Chengyu had never wavered internally. He could clearly sense himself edging closer and closer to the truth, unearthing the secrets of what truly happened all those years ago.

"What about afterward, when you’ve sorted out your family’s matters?"

"Afterward?"

The Heaven-Mending Stone’s probing stunned Su Chengyu briefly. Since attaining enlightenment, he had forged ahead, step by step, with no thought for anything beyond the target his grandfather Su Linyuan had left for him far in the distance.

In the past, his goals had seemed too unattainable, but now...

"I understand your obsession, but that was your grandfather’s generation’s burden. Su Chengyu, I want to ask: what are you cultivating for yourself?"

"To cultivate a clear conscience."

Seeing Su Chengyu’s resolute answer, the Heaven-Mending Stone retorted exasperatedly.

"That’s a method! I’m asking about your purpose, your goal! You as an individual—what do you seek for yourself?"

Silence. Wordlessness.

The question thrust forward by the Heaven-Mending Stone left Su Chengyu momentarily unsure of how to respond.

Seeing this, the Heaven-Mending Stone continued,

"Just as with the Daoist out there—you believe he found someone to carry forward his Sword Dao and Sword Intent, so he is ready to embrace death without regret. And what about you? What do you want? Will your entire life simply revolve around that bygone era of your grandfather?"

"Of course not!"

Su Chengyu responded instinctively, yet he couldn’t immediately provide an answer to the Heaven-Mending Stone’s question.

"If not, then what is it that Su Chengyu truly wants?"

After a brief moment of contemplation, Su Chengyu murmured, "Give me some time. Let me think."

"Fine."

The Heaven-Mending Stone didn’t press further, and Su Chengyu stopped entangling himself in the matter.

He understood. The Heaven-Mending Stone’s question at this critical moment must have held unique significance.

Bai Qiu and Ao Tian’s reunion clearly suggested some things had been kept from him.

As for the Heaven-Mending Stone, its reasons for remaining evasive about how it ended up in the Mortal World were still unknown.

In the past, with his limited realm and narrow perspective, Su Chengyu hadn’t been aware of these veiled truths, nor had he seen them as problems.

But now, with his cultivation nearing the Hollow Vacuum, it was evident that none of these individuals’ appearances in his life were mere coincidence or accident.

The Heaven-Mending Stone’s questioning tonight had to be backed by its own motives.

Yet just as Su Chengyu initially stated, regardless of what the Heaven-Mending Stone sought in provoking this line of thought, his priority remained: to cultivate a clear conscience.

A clear conscience...

"How dare you! The sacred grounds of the Qingqiu Fox Clan are no place for you to wreak havoc!"

A voice of indeterminate gender resounded across the depths of Qingqiu Mausoleum. Accompanied by immense tremors underground, the commotion immediately drew the attention of both Bai Qiu and Su Chengyu.

Before Su Chengyu could speak, Bai Qiu noticed something first and frowned, "Ao Tian’s aura is faint over there—looks like he’s already injured."

Su Chengyu instinctively clenched his fists before casting his gaze toward the anomaly—a tendril of ominous gray aura—and frowned, "What is that gray-black aura? It’s incredibly unsettling."

"The Heaven-reaching Ghost-killing Formation. I never expected anyone in the lower realms to know such an obscure formation technique."

The Heaven-Mending Stone answered Su Chengyu’s question directly, explaining further without waiting for him to press for details.

"This is a method specifically targeting thought consciousness and Divine Sense. Rarely employed, even in the Immortal World, since so few specialize in utilizing Divine Sense as a weapon. Apart from a handful of exceptions, the only large-scale remains of Divine Sense detectable are the residual thoughts left by Immortal Gods who have perished."

Su Chengyu quickly deduced from the explanation, "This formation was designed to deal with the spiritual bodies left behind by Qingqiu Fox Clan’s ancestors? The Luo Clan? No, that doesn’t make sense. The Luo Clan didn’t have the means to open this place, so why go to such lengths to prepare this technique?"

Upon detecting a familiar aura within the gray mist, Su Chengyu’s eyes narrowed. With a cold voice, he concluded, "It’s the demonic faction!"
