Chapter 1637: Chapter 1638: Seeing Mo Ningchen Again
"Demonic Path?"
Bai Qiu’s peculiar gaze swept over, clearly not expecting the Demonic Path to be entangled here as well.
Su Chengyu leapt off Bai Qiu’s back in one swift motion, slipping into an alert stance as he moved forward and spoke.
"There’s no time to explain. Anyway, the Demonic Path people are definitely prepared. They’re likely aiming for Qingqiu Mausoleum, maybe even..."
Halfway through his sentence, Su Chengyu’s expression darkened again, remembering he had disclosed Yu Yanshu’s whereabouts to Cui Manlou.
This was partly due to the unavoidable situation with Cang Qing True Master and partly because he trusted in the presence of Wan Qiu Daoist. Not knowing when Yu Yanshu and the others would return—or where—they were meant to remain in a reactive position against the Demonic Path’s actions.
But judging from the Great Formation before them, the Demonic Path clearly had long known about Qingqiu Mausoleum. Their understanding of it might even exceed that of the Luo Clan.
Su Chengyu’s mind became a muddled haze; he couldn’t fathom how this was possible.
Back then, Qingqiu Fox Clan’s existence was undeniably a secret. The Luo Clan’s annexation of Qingqiu Cave Heaven and occupation of Qingqiu Mausoleum must have been carried out covertly as well. How had the Demonic Path learned of this?
Even with Wan Qiu True Master’s earlier preparations, it couldn’t suppress the burning anxiety within Su Chengyu at this moment.
Indeed, compared to the Luo Clan, who had resigned themselves to a desperate gamble, the Demonic Path’s calculated arrival made them the true critical threat.
"Su Chengyu..."
Bai Qiu, noticing the turmoil in Su Chengyu’s heart, softly attempted to console him.
However, Su Chengyu felt a sharp killing intent emanating from the black mist ahead. Without hesitation, he raised his left hand, and the Wasteland Battle Halberd materialized out of thin air, hurling it straight through the murderous aura!
Bang!
A massive cloud of dust and impact appeared in the distance, and the resulting airwaves forced Su Chengyu and Bai Qiu to halt in their tracks.
Emerging from the cloud of airwaves was a man Su Chengyu once knew closely—now so altered in appearance it was difficult to reconcile him with the past.
"Finally, we meet again, Su Chengyu."
Gazing at the man who spoke, Su Chengyu’s eyebrows knitted as he coldly retorted, "Mo Ningchen, have you pledged allegiance to the Demonic Path?"
The man before him, Mo Ningchen, showed almost no trace of his former self: long black hair, a gaunt face, pallid skin with hints of dark hues—truly unrecognizable from the Saint Envoy known as Qian Jun of the Demon Slayer Department.
"It wasn’t that I wanted to pledge allegiance to the Demonic Path. You’re the one who forced me to!"
"I forced you? I’ve given you countless chances. Besides, the ones who used and ultimately abandoned you were Yang Qianyan and Yang Chengyin. Shouldn’t you seek revenge against them first?"
Mo Ningchen’s lips curled slightly into a cold smile. "I don’t need your reminder. I’m well aware of that. Rest assured, I’ll deal with them. But you—you’re no innocent, Su Chengyu. They’re the culprits, true, but you’re the cause of it all!"
Mo Ningchen’s veins bulged, and his bloodshot eyes betrayed his internal turmoil as he suppressed the hatred boiling inside him.
A raw and oppressive force emanated from Mo Ningchen, chilling Su Chengyu to the bone. Only then did it become evident that this gaunt man was, indeed, a seasoned Martial Artist.
Bai Qiu’s golden eyes fell on Mo Ningchen. Detecting the unusual aura around him, Bai Qiu whispered beside Su Chengyu.
"Judging by his Realm, he’s merely a Low Grade Martial God. Yet his aura feels anomalous, and his mastery over True Qi seems far superior to that of ordinary Martial Gods."
"I know."
Su Chengyu replied calmly.
Mo Ningchen, after all, had once been a mid-tier Saint Envoy within the Demon Slayer Department, someone feared even before achieving Martial God status—capable of holding his own against Low Grade Martial Gods. Now, having joined the Demonic Path, who knew what uncanny techniques he’d gained.
On top of that, his deliberate pursuit of Su Chengyu now showed that he’d prepared for this moment. Su Chengyu was keenly aware that leaving this place wouldn’t be achieved easily or quickly.
"Bai Qiu, hold him off. You go assist Ao Tian."
Bai Qiu hesitated for a second, turning back to look at Su Chengyu. Yet upon meeting Su Chengyu’s urgent gaze, Bai Qiu chose not to speak further.
No one wanted to reach Ao Tian—or their disciple—more than he did. Sending Bai Qiu ahead alone would be the most effective move for the mission.
After nodding, Bai Qiu glanced at the distant formation taking shape and spoke, "Make quick work of him. I might not be able to handle everything on my own."
Leaving those parting words, Bai Qiu’s figure transformed into a streak of lightning, flashing past Su Chengyu with thunderous gales, vanishing instantly from his side.
Su Chengyu’s icy gaze settled upon Mo Ningchen, as he murmured, "You’re blocking the way for this?"
"Blocking for what?"
Mo Ningchen chuckled and replied, "They have far greater numbers on the other side, and those idiots from the Luo Clan are helping them deal with you. Even if she’s truly from the Four Great Divine Beasts, there’s no way she’ll survive. But don’t worry; the strategist has commanded—they’re to capture her alive, along with that Azure Dragon. They’ll serve our Demonic Path well."
Su Chengyu found Mo Ningchen’s final remarks particularly grating. He knew Mo Ningchen wasn’t someone bound by loyalty, but he didn’t anticipate such total betrayal.
"Do you really feel no remorse deep down?"
"Remorse?"
Mo Ningchen scoffed coldly, "What nonsense are you spouting? People like us don’t bother with guilt or regret. Oh—my mistake. I shouldn’t lump you in with me. From the start, I shouldn’t have. If I’d known better, it might’ve spared me from making such grave errors."
Su Chengyu remained silent, understanding full well what Mo Ningchen meant.
In some ways, Mo Ningchen and he did share many similarities.
Both hailed from humble beginnings, clawing their way step by step to prominence in the Capital City and the Demon Slayer Department. Having endured the cold realities of the mortal world, Mo Ningchen learned to tailor his approach to suit circumstances, honing the ability to charm and manipulate with ease.
But Mo Ningchen had misjudged him. Su Chengyu was never like him. Unfortunately...
"I could never bring myself to say something as callous as ’every man for himself, and let heaven and earth be damned.’"
"Hypocrite."
"You might see me as such, but I understand. Given your orphaned upbringing, unburdened and unattached, it’s no surprise you turned out this way. But for me, I simply refuse to disappoint those who count on me."
Su Chengyu could resort to cunning and compromise without shame, but he would never abandon his principles or core values.
Without them, he wouldn’t have the right to clear his grandfather Su Linyuan’s name, to stand on the side of righteousness and restore the honor of his lifelong loyalty to Xia Country, and to keep from shattering the faith placed in him by those like Lin An, Nan Zhi, and Yan’er.
"Life was never just about oneself. It’s also about those who cherish and believe in you."
Su Chengyu’s words cut deeply into Mo Ningchen’s core. His face contorted as he charged at Su Chengyu, a gray-tinged golden Qi enveloping his body. He howled while unleashing his fury.
"What does that have to do with me? You walk the path of sunlight—why block me from my solitary bridge? It’s you, it’s YOU, Su Chengyu, who forced me into this corner!"
