Chapter 1014 - 1014 1000 Carefree Number

Chapter 1014: Chapter 1000: Carefree Number Chapter 1014: Chapter 1000: Carefree Number “You’re not going to leave me here alone and walk away, are you?” Nangong Yan asked.

“How could I? I can’t bear to do so.” Saying this, he flashed into view. Under a coconut tree ahead, four men were gathered—not many. They were drinking, appearing to be in a merry mood.

He walked over and blurted out, “Hey, are you fishermen from around here too?”

The four men all looked over, at first stunned, then sizing him up; they felt he didn’t look like a fisherman. Ye Chen quickly added, “I came here with a fisherman because it got too dark, so I stopped here for the night. I’ll continue on my way tomorrow.”

A man with a whiskered face, upon hearing this, dropped his suspicion, and slightly nodded, saying, “Yes, we are fishermen.”

“I see that those seem to be pirates; aren’t you afraid?”

“What’s there to be afraid of? What’s the big deal with pirates, as long as they don’t hurt people?”

“Are you here to help them move things?” He noticed that many who were moving things were dressed like them.

“Hmm, we are local fishermen. We have nothing to do at night, and they have work here, so we came over, and they’re also recruiting,” a young lad said.

“Recruiting, does it mean getting on their ships?”

“Right.”

“Where are they going?”

“They should be going to Sacred Spirit Island.”

No sooner had he finished his words than the whiskered man nudged him, and the young lad quickly shut his mouth. It turned out these fishermen all liked the Iron Ten Thousand Bandits. They knew that the bandits had grudges with some Island Masters and didn’t want the Iron Ten Thousand to get into trouble. Occasionally, the Iron Ten Thousand would help these fishermen deal with the big merchants, as the fishermen merely survived on their limited capabilities, often bullied by the big merchants. The Iron Ten Thousand Bandits stood up for them, offering quite a bit of help indeed.

“Are you also going to Sacred Spirit Island?” Ye Chen asked again.

“What would we do on Sacred Spirit Island? It’s very dangerous there; no need to go without necessity,” another one said. It turned out that the Iron Ten Thousand had already informed them that Sacred Spirit Island would be dangerous recently and advised them not to go there without good reason.

The guy in the back hollered, “Come on, let’s drink.” The whiskered man’s wariness noticeably increased.

Ye Chen felt it was inconvenient to say more to them, but he still wanted to understand the situation clearer, so he walked around the beach a bit more, his focus only on the fishermen.

Nangong Yan had stayed hidden in the thick jungle for quite a while, almost feeling sleepy, when, after nearly one hour, Ye Chen came back, carrying two sets of clothing.

Nangong Yan exclaimed, “I thought you had left me behind and gone off by yourself.”

“How dare I?”

“What did you bring back fishermen’s clothing for?”

Ye Chen said, “Those two ships are heading to Sacred Spirit Island tomorrow. They’re recruiting, and we can blend in with them.” He didn’t want to take risks, but after asking around, all the boatmen said they were not going to Sacred Spirit Island, so this was the only option he had.

“What, those two ships are heading for Sacred Spirit Island?”

“Yes, they’re posing as merchants to do business on Sacred Spirit Island.”

“But they are all people from the Iron Ten Thousand Bandits.”

“Of course, I know, but there’s no choice. All the fishermen know that it’s dangerous to go to Sacred Spirit Island, and none of them are willing to take us. We can only go along with them. Don’t worry, not all of them are from the Iron Ten Thousand; some are genuine merchants. They’ve also recruited many fishermen to work for them, so we can mix in.” Ye Chen handed her one of the garments and added, “You’ve disguised as a man before. It shouldn’t be noticeable.”

Nangong Yan sized it up and murmured, “It won’t cause any trouble, right?”

“No, at worst, they’ll catch you to bear their children,” he teased.

“Better they catch you to be their slave,” Nangong Yan retorted with a fierce tone.

“Hey, hurry up. I’m afraid that in a short while, they will have recruited enough people, and you certainly don’t want to stay on this island forever,” Ye Chen said.

“You can even come up with such a dangerous idea…”

“It’s not exactly dangerous, but certainly thrilling,” Ye Chen replied as he went into the woods to change his clothes.

Nangong Yan had to put on coarse clothes again, but with no other choice, she tidied up once more to make herself look like a little beggar.

“How’s your wound?” Ye Chen asked with concern.

“I won’t die.”

“Don’t worry, just follow me, I won’t let them harass you.” She really had a bit of a tomboy look to her, so captivating, just a bit too skinny, seemed malnourished.

“I’m not worried about them harassing me, I’m more worried about you harassing me.” She wrapped a cloth around her head, making her face look darker, it was really hard to tell.

Ye Chen chuckled, touched up her face again, and said, “Still pretty cute though.”

The two of them hurried over to where some people were recruiting workers.

Ye Chen and Nangong Yan really looked like a pair of fishermen, except Nangong Yan was a bit on the thin side.

“Big brother, we’re here for work, do you still have any openings?” Ye Chen asked, bowing eagerly.

“No more, all filled up.” The speaker was a fat man with a pair of mustaches.

“Can’t be, we came all the way here, finally made it in time, give us a chance,” Ye Chen, worried about not getting on the ship, pleaded, “Really, if you don’t give us a chance, we’ll starve to death. We’re not afraid of hard work, just give us two meals and we’ll take any job. Please, do us a kindness.”

Someone next to the fat man then said, “Seems like there are two spots left in the chicken and duck cabin.”

Ye Chen continued to plead, “My brother is nearly malnourished, please, just give us a chance, we just want to get by with a meal.”

“Can you feed them?” the fat man asked.

“Feeding poultry? Of course, we’ve done that back home. We’ve raised a dozen chickens and ducks, and even have a cow and two sheep at home. We’re really careful, I guarantee we’ll fatten them up just fine,” Ye Chen saw an opportunity and naturally did not hesitate to show his eagerness.

“Fine, you two, just don’t slack off.” After discussing the price, Ye Chen agreed without a second word, as the fat man also wanted to finish up soon. It had been past midnight, and if not for this urgent matter, he would have been fast asleep by now.

Two people then led Ye Chen and Nangong Yan onto the ship.

They raised some pigs, sheep, chickens, and ducks on the ship for food during the voyage, but most people disliked this job because it was too dirty, so they avoided it.

Ye Chen had finally infiltrated the Free Wanderer.

Nangong Yan followed Ye Chen cautiously, looking around, and then asked, “They’re heading to Sacred Spirit Island, aren’t they?”

“Relax, I’m not deaf.” He didn’t want to waste any time here; he was eager to get there as soon as possible.

By this time, most of the crew had retired for the night, and indeed it was a bit tiring. The ship exhibited no sign of pirates; it must have been deliberately kept inconspicuous. Inside were mostly members of the Iron Ten Thousand Bandits, but not too obviously, as they had mixed in some merchants and laborers to avoid detection.

As for those sea merchants, they wished for nothing more than someone to protect their ships, so they wouldn’t have to spend their money. Naturally, they were more than willing to travel with the Iron Ten Thousand Bandits – it was like having personal bodyguards, and without spending a dime.

“Looks like the people from Iron Ten Thousand aren’t dumb, they’re the smart ones.”

“Sooner or later, we will eliminate them,” Nangong Yan said from behind.

“Why? Just because they’re pirates, you think they’re all bad and need to be wiped out?”

“Heh, these guys go around robbing and plundering, they’re up to no good. Tell me they’re still good people?”

Ye Chen responded quietly, “I don’t see it that way. Look, if they were really that bad, why would so many fishermen willingly work for them? Those fishermen seem quite happy to help, not wanting them to get into trouble.”

“You don’t understand anything, just babbling nonsense. In your eyes, pirates have become the good guys; you must be blind to say something like that.” Thinking back to the time their ship was sunk by pirates, leading them to be stranded on an island, how could he possibly feel any sympathy towards pirates?

Ye Chen laughed and said, “I’m just stating the facts. Sure, most pirates are bad, but this group seems different. Look, there are some merchants here too. If the Iron Ten Thousand Bandits were truly ruthless and lacked any sense of honor, these people wouldn’t follow them onto the ship. They don’t seem as bad as you make them out to be.”

“You know nothing,” Nangong Yan said angrily.

They continued walking further inside, turning through several long corridors before arriving at a communal chamber where about thirty strong men presumably there for work resided.

“This is it. Someone will instruct you on your duties tomorrow.” Pointing to two adjoining spots in one corner, he said, “You’ll stay there.”

“Here?” To Nangong Yan, accustomed to lavish estates, an entire room seemed small, let alone a space crowded with muscled men, some already snoring. How could she stand it?

“What’s the matter? This is it. If you don’t like it, you can still move to the chicken and duck cabin tomorrow. I guarantee you’ll get to enjoy the smell of chicken droppings all day after a night there.”

Nangong Yan glared at the arrogant man.

Ye Chen quickly said, “This is great, this spot is just what we need, a place to keep each other warm, perfect.” He profusely thanked the man, what else could they do at that moment?

The man left with a look of disdain.
