Standing Next To You
Chapter 595: A Long Trip

Chapter 595: A Long Trip

Three days passed, and Zhong Cheng was the first to end his short break from work. The next day, Xu Tian also returned from his vacation.

With both of them back, the workload was greatly reduced.

"Boss, since you’ve worked so hard this week, why not take a vacation? Xu Tian and I were able to take proper breaks because of you. We’d like to return the favor," Zhong Cheng suggested.

"I don’t need a vacation. Butler Xin needs my help abroad. I have to leave and might stay there for a week."

"Butler Xin can handle it. Think about it, Boss—when was the last time you took a real break? I understand if you don’t want to rest for your own sake, but what about Madame Bei? She’s getting older, and you’ve been spending less time with her."

Bei Sangyun paused. He was right. Ever since she returned to the country, she’d been caught up with work or preoccupied with Fei Chuan. Although Grandma Bei always said she was content tending the garden, she might be a bit lonely.

"Alright. I’ll check with Butler Xin first. If I do go on a trip, would you handle the company while I’m away?"

"Of course I can—especially now that I have Xu Tian."

Zhong Cheng’s suggestion stayed with Bei Sangyun. During dinner, she brought it up with Grandma Bei.

"Grandma, do you want to go somewhere?"

Grandma Bei was happily ladling soup into her bowl. "Why would I go anywhere when I have my granddaughter here? Now that man isn’t around, I get to have you all to myself. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be."

Bei Sangyun suddenly felt a pang of guilt. Ever since she and Fei Chuan had reconciled, they’d been inseparable. Every time she came home, he was with her. Every morning when she left for work, he was there too.

With Fei Chuan always around, she’d been talking less and paying less attention to her grandmother. When was the last time they have conversation like this? She could barely remember.

She really did need to spend more time with Grandma Bei.

"Not necessarily now. I was just wondering—are there any places you’ve always wanted to visit? We could take a trip. Just us, family."

"Just us?" Grandma Bei looked surprised.

"Yeah. Of course, Sister Ye would come with us. Just the three of us—our little family."

Maid Ye Zhai and Grandma Bei both looked up, exchanging glances.

"So, what do you think?"

Grandma Bei set down the ladle, her expression turning thoughtful as she seriously considered the idea. "I’ve lived in this country most of my life. But I’ve never actually seen the best parts of it."

Bei Sangyun smiled. "Alright. Then we’ll explore every corner of the country together. That’s our first goal."

Hearing that they’d be together for the trip, Grandma Bei’s face lit up—and she was humming cheerfully all through dinner.

Bei Sangyun smiled quietly to herself. Deep down, she felt a pang of guilt. She had promised to make it up to her grandmother on this trip.

That night, just before bed, she called Fei Chuan to tell him about the sudden change in plans.

"A trip? That’s nice. Grandma Bei has been shooting me daggers ever since I started stealing your time away from her. I’m glad you’ll get to spend more time with her."

"She has? I thought my grandma was always welcoming to you."

"Actually, she glares at me every time I come over. But I get it. After all, I made you cry."

"I always thought Grandma liked you."

"How could she like me? I made her precious granddaughter the talk of the town, got you expelled from school, and hurt you more than once. Honestly, I still hate myself for everything I did to you."

"Hmm..." Bei Sangyun slumped onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling. Although Grandma Bei often pouted and complained about Fei Chuan, deep down, she felt her grandma did like him.

Grandma Bei was just a bit... what was the word Zhong Cheng used? Tsundere...

"Hmmm... I still think she likes you. I know how Grandma acts toward people she doesn’t like." She rolled onto her side. "By the way, are you eating well over there?"

"I am. Though I’d eat a lot better if you were here."

Bei Sangyun chuckled. He said sweet things in such serious tone. She could imagine him frowning while saying these things. It must be so amusing to watch.

"I’m eating on time too. But I miss dining with you."

She heard a heavy sigh from the other end of the line.

"Is your sense of taste still working?" Fei Chuan asked.

"Yes. Miraculously. After not tasting anything for so long, everything feels new to me now. It’s wonderful. Though... I’m scared it might disappear again."

"It won’t," he said gently. "And if anything ever happens, I’ll come to you right away."

Bei Sangyun smiled. "Alright. But for now, don’t worry about me. Just focus, so you can come back soon."

"I want to," Fei Chuan said with another sigh. "But this might take longer than I thought."

His voice sounded so miserable that Bei Sangyun felt a stab of sympathy.

"Is the business trip giving you trouble?"

"No. But being away from you, not seeing you every day... that’s what’s hard."

She sighed too. It had only been a day, and she already missed him deeply.

"I wish I could come to you instead."

"If you do, Grandma Bei might really hate me—for stealing her granddaughter. Though... maybe she’ll hate me anyway, once I really take you away."

Bei Sangyun chuckled.

"Just a little longer," Fei Chuan murmured. "Soon, we won’t have to be apart anymore."

Bei Sangyun rolled onto her back and whispered, "Yes. I can’t wait for you to come back."

It was a sweet night. Their conversation softened into quiet whispers, warm and tender in her ears. The words lingered in her heart, keeping her smiling even as she drifted off to sleep.
