Standing Next To You -
Chapter 593: A Dream
Chapter 593: A Dream
...Sister Zhai left her resignation letter on the tombstone... bidding me goodbye forever... The ink on the paper had faded.
Bei Sangyun tried to write again.
The next thing I knew... — but the ballpoint pen had already run out of ink.
She put the pen down and glanced at the window. The sun was already rising. She had spent the whole night writing about the previous life — or at least, the parts she could still remember.
Her hand touched the journal, now half-filled.
Ever since that moment in the car, Bei Sangyun had been writing in it. But her memories of her previous life were slipping away. Some she could recall, while others had vanished no matter how hard she tried.
Her journal was full of gaps, out of chronological order. Sometimes, when she went back to reread earlier entries, she was shocked to find she couldn’t recall any of them — as if the memories had been wiped clean.
A strange feeling lingered within her — that soon, she might not even recognize the words she had written. That she might completely forget the life she once lived.
For most people, forgetting a painful past might be a blessing. But Bei Sangyun didn’t want to forget. That past, painful as it was, was proof — proof that people could grow, could heal, and that Fei Chuan had accompanied her faithfully for decades.
Next to the journal lay the list she had made in the car. Some of the lines on it were already fading from her memory. She took a new pen, copied the list, and made two versions — one for Fei Chuan to keep, and one for herself.
When she reached the last line, Bei Sangyun paused. She put the pen down.
There was no need for Fei Chuan to know that he had almost married Melanie.
She slipped the original list into her journal and returned to bed.
The sun was rising, and Bei Sangyun finally drifted into slumber.
...
"I don’t want to forget..."
It was a soft voice that escaped her lips — melodious, but weak.
She gazed up at the million stars scattered across the sky. The beautiful aurora stretched as far as her eyes could see, like a celestial curtain dividing this paradise — the realm of beings like her — from the gods high above.
"If I complete the cycle and am reborn... I won’t be me anymore, right?" She turned to the figure beside her. The feeling of loss, unwillingness, and loneliness gnawing on her. "I won’t remember how I was despised by my own kind. How I found this place... and eventually met you. When I’m reborn, I won’t... remember you anymore, right?"
The radiant aurora shimmered in his hair. His long silver strands flowed like silk into the depths of the sea. His form was cloaked in mist, but she heard his soft sigh — a deep, beautiful voice that echoed through the world, yet reached only her ears.
His hand — enormous compared to her tiny form — reached out gently. With a single finger, he patted her head, warm and reassuring.
"Little one, don’t be afraid. You won’t forget. And if you ever do... it means I’m already there — beside you. Just as I’ve always been."
Bei Sangyun woke up.
The alarm blared beside her bed, echoing through the room — then, it suddenly stopped.
"Sangyun, it’s already past ten a.m. Your grandma’s worried you’re not up yet."
Maid Ye Zhai stood at her bedside, lightly nagging her.
Bei Sangyun sat up groggily. "I slept late... I’ll take a bath now." She quickly made her way to the bathroom.
As the water poured over her face in the shower, Bei Sangyun stood frozen, dazed.
That was... a strange dream.
"Sangyun, Fei Chuan’s subordinate dropped by. He brought something for you," Maid Ye Zhai called from outside the bathroom.
"Oh shoot," Bei Sangyun muttered. She had just remembered Fei Chuan. He usually picked her up on time and drove her to work. He must have come earlier.
She quickly finished her bath, and while changing, she called out to Maid Ye Zhai, "Did Fei Chuan come here?"
"Yes, he did. But I told him you were still sleeping. He waited for an hour, but then left and said to let you sleep more. His assistant is downstairs. It looks like he sent another gift."
"Oh, he shouldn’t have bothered," Bei Sangyun said, smiling. Every day, Fei Chuan showered her with gifts — it never seemed to end.
She took the earrings and necklace from the box and wore them. In the mirror, the blue crystal gems sparkled softly. Bei Sangyun gently touched them, and her dream returned to her mind — the beautiful aurora, the silver hair, and behind the shroud of mist, the vivid blue glinting like it held the stars. When she gazed into those pair of eyes, she had felt warmth... and deep affection.
She touched the gem on her necklace and murmured, "It’s in a good place now."
Downstairs, Assistant Cheng was waiting with a basket of flowers, a healthy breakfast, and a premium tea blend.
"My boss sent me to pick you up, Miss Bei. He apologizes for not being able to come himself — he’s currently in a meeting."
"It’s fine. He already dropped by earlier... He should’ve woken me up," Bei Sangyun said with a trace of guilt. When she saw her favorite flowers, her favorite breakfast, and tea that helped shake off drowsiness, her heart melted.
"Alright. Let’s take everything to the car." Bei Sangyun signaled to Maid Ye Zhai to inform Driver Chen that he could take the day off.
Driver Chen, whose job had been stolen by Fei Chuan and his assistant lately: "..."
Assistant Cheng helped bring everything to Bei Sangyun’s office. During lunch, Fei Chuan called to say he wouldn’t be able to join her. Instead, he sent Xu Tian and Zhong Cheng.
Bei Sangyun didn’t dwell on it too much. Even though she was a little lonely for not seeing Fei Chuan in the morning and not eating lunch with him, she understood.
She decided to use the time to prepare a gift for him.
"A gift?" Bei Sangyun asked for Xu Tian and Zhong Cheng’s opinion during lunch.
