Chapter 982: Chapter 987: Something Seems Off
Hegelhaus laughed genuinely; indeed, he was genuinely amused because he was feeling quite proud at the moment.
Yang Yi’s heart sank slightly, but he was willing to rise to the challenge.
"So what kind of test do I need to pass next, Instructor?"
"It’s simple. You design a flight route. The flight manual contains a tutorial on route design. Since you’ve already passed the test, you must have some insights into the design of flight routes. I’m feeling generous; I’ll give you one more day! If you were able to memorize the flight manual in one day, then familiarizing yourself with route design in one day shouldn’t be a problem for you, right?"
Hegelhaus smiled triumphantly while Yang Yi, showing no expression, said, "Tomorrow? Why wait until tomorrow? Let’s do the test now."
Hegelhaus was taken aback by Yang Yi’s attitude.
Designing a flight route was not like the exam he had just taken. If the exam tested using papers and was all multiple-choice questions, Yang Yi could know the answers in advance, thereby quickly passing the exam and even getting perfect scores. However, designing a flight route was different.
Commercial flights typically follow fixed routes, but when not flying on fixed routes, you must design your own.
To design a route, you need to know the weather at the two airports, design waypoints according to the weather, and understand information about navigational aids and airport details based on the pilot’s notices. After obtaining all this complex information, you also need to check for no-fly zones and temporary no-fly areas before finally being able to design a route.
If Hegelhaus were to determine the two cities, or rather the airports, on the spot and then asked Yang Yi to design the route, there would be no possibility for Yang Yi to cheat.
But Yang Yi had memorized two flight manuals! He really knew how to design a flight route, and while designing routes was typically something an experienced pilot would teach over many sessions, mainly learned hands-on, the fact remained that if Yang Yi knew how to design a route, he could certainly do it following the rules or requirements laid out in the flight manual.
Hegelhaus still couldn’t seem to get angry. He slowly said, "Fine, let’s make it simple, then. Design a route from Dulles International Airport to Augusta Airport, starting right here. Reggie, give him today’s weather forecast and pilot’s notices."
Yang Yi sat back down as Reggie needed some time to prepare the needed materials. However, this was the CIA training camp, and all necessary information would certainly be available.
Soon, Yang Yi began crafting his flight route. Starting with the weather map, marking wind direction and strength, atmospheric pressure, then bypassing the no-fly zone trap over the Washington D.C. area, and in half an hour, he pushed his designed flight route in front of Hegelhaus.
After looking over the route Yang Yi had designed, Hegelhaus then believed that Yang Yi had not cheated earlier.
This only made Hegelhaus even angrier.
Slamming Yang Yi’s route down on the table, Hegelhaus stood up, his nose nearly touching Yang Yi’s face, and in a lowered voice, he said angrily, "You motherfucker still claim you’re not messing with me! Tell me! Who sent you to make a fool of me!"
Yang Yi didn’t wipe his face and calmly replied, "Instructor, I truly started from zero, but you may have overlooked one thing. Starting from zero does not mean slow learning. Since the flight manual you gave me contained the correct answers, is it strange that I could answer all the questions?"
Hegelhaus sat back down, sneering, "So you mean to say you’re really that good."
Yang Yi, still expressionless, said, "I never claimed that. I just want to make one thing clear, Instructor. I’m on a tight schedule, I’m very busy, and if possible, I’d like to learn to fly quickly so I can move on to other things. In fact, I’d suggest you don’t need to teach me personally; any instructor would do, saving you time and sparing you from further doubts about whether I’m playing you."
Yang Yi’s tone turned disrespectful, as he could no longer tolerate it. Regardless of why Hegelhaus had such a big problem with him, there was no reason for him to keep enduring it.
"Very well, very well! I like your attitude. I’ll teach you personally. Let’s start hands-on learning right now."
After saying that, Hegelhaus looked at Reggie and said in a deep voice, "Prepare a T-6A for me. I’m taking the student flying!"
The CIA training camp really was different, as a T-6A is a military primary trainer aircraft, unlike the propeller-driven light aircraft used by civilian pilots, because it’s a real military aircraft, and even as a trainer, it’s much more powerful than civilian aircraft.
Reggie, somewhat incredulously, whispered, "Now?"
"Now, immediately."
Reggie glanced at Yang Yi, then left.
Yang Yi felt the pace was a bit fast because he should have started with the simulator first, at least to grasp the basics of aircraft control before moving on to the real thing.
After all, this was the CIA training camp; not only did they have simulators, but they had the most advanced ones, surely quite different from civilian flight schools. Yet Yang Yi felt Hegelhaus might want to show him the ropes in a more hands-on way.
And how? By directly taking Yang Yi up for a flight.
After a while, Reggie returned and said to Hegelhaus, "The aircraft is ready."
Hegelhaus stood up, put on his sunglasses from the table with a smile, and said, "Let’s go."
A T-6A dual-seat primary trainer aircraft waited on the runway along with other planes, the models of which Yang Yi didn’t quite recognize but could tell were assuredly different from the T-6A. More notably, there were about twenty people waiting there, with four others dressed as pilots also standing near the runway.
Today was supposed to be the beginners class’s first flight day, but Hegelhaus had disrupted the schedule.
Reaching the plane, Hegelhaus took a helmet that was handed to him and then climbed directly onto the aircraft.
He sat down in the back seat, the instructor’s position.
A crew member handed Yang Yi a helmet.
Those civilian light aircraft didn’t necessarily require helmets—not that they weren’t needed, but they simply weren’t like the flight helmets used in military trainers. Regardless of what aircraft type would be flown in the future, the helmet from these military primary trainers was definitely the first thing those military pilots needed to get familiar with.
At this moment, Yang Yi couldn’t help but say, "Wait! I haven’t touched the cockpit of any aircraft before. According to the flight manual, shouldn’t I become familiar with the model I’m going to fly? At least I should know what instruments there are and what they’re used for, right?"
This situation seemed a bit off, at least out of the ordinary, and certainly didn’t follow the proper procedures and protocols.
Hegelhaus smiled and said, "You’re right, I should tell you how to use these instruments and controls, and then you’ll have learned, correct? You’re quick at learning, so come on up, I’ll teach you."
