Chapter 964: Chapter 969 Preferred Treatment

CIA headquarters were essentially run by the management staff; it couldn’t be said to be everyone, but at least the majority. And when Walter personally took Yang Yi to handle the onboarding procedures, things really got a lot simpler.

A newcomer to headquarters, whether straight out of recruitment or a recent transfer, couldn’t be settled in with just a word. The creation of records and IDs definitely required some time. However, if someone was urging the process along, whether openly or not, the production of identification sped up significantly.

Yang Yi couldn’t see the files, nor did he need to. He just needed to get his ID.

Walter knocked on the desk and then said indifferently, "I’m here to pick up his ID. Do you have it ready?"

"This morning it just got made. Take a look at the photo, do you like it?"

The person in charge of issuing IDs was a matronly figure who always smiled at Yang Yi, appearing extremely, extremely kind.

Leaning on the tall desk, Walter directed at Yang Yi, "Take a look and see if you’re satisfied with your ID photo."

Yang Yi hadn’t gotten a photo taken specifically for the ID, but solving such a trivial matter was too simple.

He took a black-covered ID in hand that bore the CIA emblem, and he also received a badge, presumably made of bronze, that felt slightly weighty in his hand.

Then another ID was a special weapon permit; while Yang Yi had no enforcement powers within the United States, he did have special permission to carry firearms.

Yang Yi opened the ID, and the photo seemed to be from yesterday in the interrogation room, an image cropped from the captured video, but it seemed free of any faults.

He nodded and smiled, "Very nice."

Another badge slid in front of Yang Yi, and the matronly lady smiled, "Your badge."

Walter tilted his head and grinned, "Always have your badge on while at headquarters. Some places require a badge to pass through security. Okay, take your things; we’re off to pick up your weapon."

Yang Yi thanked the matron lady, as she smiled at Yang Yi and said, "If you lose your ID, feel free to come get a new one anytime. I’ll make it quickly for you. A handsome man like you deserves special treatment, doesn’t he? Goodbye."

Yang Yi suddenly felt a chill in his heart and, after giving a polite smile, quickly followed in Walter’s footsteps.

"Susan has been working here for more than twenty years, you know. The creation and issuance of IDs is, actually, highly confidential. Don’t be deceived by her cougary demeanor and underestimate her; this woman’s security clearance is higher than you might imagine, so she hardly smiles at anyone."

"She’s been smiling at me the whole time."

"Let me finish. Susan only smiles at handsome guys; her constant smiling means she likes you."

With a hearty laugh, Walter clapped Yang Yi on the shoulder, "You seem quite popular. Young, wealthy, and handsome, pal. The work here is dull and stressful. Be careful not to tease those already bored office women, or it’ll get very complicated."

Yang Yi felt he was quite suited to navigate the workplace dynamics; not to mention, he believed his charm with women would certainly prove advantageous.

"You’re supposed to directly receive a weapon here, but isn’t it better that we personally pick out a sidearm that’ll stay with you for many years?"

Walter led Yang Yi through a door into an armory. Behind a steel door lay an array of gun cabinets filled with rifles and pistols, while outside two people sat conversing idly.

"Sir."

As they saw Walter, the two people stood up. Walter waved them off, "I’m introducing a new recruit. Bring the gun register."

Walter, as the top boss of these armory managers, unapologetically took a seat and then directed at Yang Yi, "Just pick any gun number you like, and register it."

One person brought up a register. While gun registration was now fully computerized, paper records were still essential. Additionally, CIA’s gun assignment procedures were stringent; guns weren’t just used and discarded like in the movies. A gun number tied to an ID was important; any loss or damage had to be logged before replacement.

The CIA had a variety of gun models, and agents could choose based on personal preference. However, for many, 9mm was deemed feminine, while .50 caliber was considered the ultimate. Since .50 caliber pistols were scarce and impractical, the .45 caliber M1911 almost became the default choice.

In the end, any gun would suffice when truly needed. Yet, in the hierarchy of gun calibers, larger diameters undoubtedly reigned supreme.

Yang Yi didn’t need to choose; his only option was the M1911. The M1911 had numerous models, and the CIA tried to accommodate their agents’ weapon preferences, certainly not restricting them to a basic model like the military might – if one wanted a higher-end model, that would come out-of-pocket.

There were many manufacturers of M1911s in the United States, ranging from a few hundred to several thousand US dollars each. The CIA’s M1911s were produced by Kimber—a brand that, even if not top-tier, was considered mid to high-end.

After careful selection, Yang Yi chose a gun number, then pointed at it.

"This number. Bring out two holsters."

Nonchalantly instructing his subordinate, Walter grinned at Yang Yi, "Do you need a rifle? We allow agents to take their issued firearms home. Many keep their assigned rifles at home, you know. You can’t buy automatic weapons on the civilian market, but here, they’re top quality, and ammunition is free to take as much as you want."

This was a hidden perk. Yang Yi unabashedly replied, "Well, that’s excellent. Any gun I want?"

"Of course."

"I’ll take an M4 with full tactical gear, a shotgun, and a sniper rifle. Sniper rifles are allowed, right?"

Walter shrugged, "Not usually, but I’ll make an exception. I have the authority. Write me a report... no, I’ll handle it. Just pick the guns you like, select a good scope, take plenty of ammo, and you can hit the range if you like."

As Walter spoke, he didn’t bother hiding this from the armory managers.

Although Yang Yi was indeed wealthy, taking advantage of U.S. taxpayers still gave him a thrill.

After Yang Yi had picked out his weapons—all available from the CIA arsenal at his discretion, with the paperwork to be done later—it was Walter who finally said indifferently, "I forgot to ask, do you have a place to stay yet?"
