Chapter 963: Chapter 968: Into the Water
Yang Yi woke up early but stayed in bed without moving, just staring at the ceiling for over an hour before he donned his bathrobe and started wandering around the suite.
It was eight o’clock, and Walter hadn’t come to find him yet, even though they had agreed that today, when it was time to go to work, Walter would call him.
Since Walter hadn’t called, it was time to order room service.
Wearing his bathrobe, Yang Yi had an expensive breakfast served by a polite and highly professional butler in his own room. The meal cost about 500 US dollars, but with service, it went up to 1000 US dollars, which was indeed very expensive for a simple breakfast.
After Yang Yi had finished his meal and everything was cleaned up, the server brought Yang Yi’s freshly laundered and ironed clothes.
Yang Yi had thought that once he truly joined the CIA, he should keep a low profile, be restrained, and ideally moonlight as a dark horse, but he couldn’t keep a low profile.
Porter and the others believed that Yang Yi must keep his mission and true identity a secret, absolutely hidden from Aaron.
To Yang Yi, however, these were false issues because he needed to attract the attention of the Grey-cloaked People, he wanted them to know he was investigating Aaron.
Of course, to draw the attention of the Grey-cloaked People and Aaron, revealing his secret in a suitable way required careful approach and timing, but keeping a low profile was not an option for Yang Yi.
Being too low-key wouldn’t draw attention, which would just be a waste of time.
After eating and dressing, Yang Yi waited until after ten o’clock before Walter finally knocked on his door.
Walter looked spirited, though with slight dark circles under his eyes.
"Let’s go, it’s time for work. I’ve already spoken with logistics, and they will expedite your affairs. By the time we get to headquarters, everything should be almost ready."
Yang Yi glanced at his watch and said, "It’s ten o’clock, and it’ll take an hour and a half to get to headquarters. By then, it’ll be lunchtime; we could rest for an hour after lunch. Why don’t we eat lunch here in advance and then get to work this afternoon in time? It’s already late, anyway."
Walter thought for a moment, then slightly annoyed, said, "It really is like that, darn, did I wake up too early?"
Yang Yi shrugged, "I thought you wouldn’t wake up until noon."
Walter smiled sheepishly and said, "I had a good night’s sleep last night, and it was quite pleasant, but here..."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Being too rich isn’t always good; it can make you lose interest in things you used to long for, making everything feel boring."
Walter didn’t know how to respond, and Yang Yi patted his shoulder and chuckled, "Let’s go, we need to find a good restaurant for a meal this time. I’ll treat you to Huaxia cuisine, if you know someplace really good, let’s head there now."
When it was time to pay, Walter felt embarrassed because Yang Yi had spent only six thousand US dollars on room service for a night, whereas he had spent over thirty thousand US dollars.
After settling the bill, Yang Yi sternly said, "We need to change places tonight because this isn’t good enough. I was expecting a hundred thousand US dollars, but it far fell short of that, which means you didn’t have enough fun last night, right?"
Walter, unable to counter, then whispered, "I’ve seen the world, but..."
Yang Yi waved his hand at Walter and said, "Quality over quantity. Do you have someone you like? If it’s not possible, then don’t say it, but if there’s a woman you saw on TV who tickled your fancy, well, you could try that—at least give it a shot."
Walter whispered, "How could that be, it’s not about the money, our identities don’t suit that kind of behavior. But I do know something about the topic you mentioned, you know? There’s this actress, she is..."
As they discussed topics common among men, Walter started leaking secrets to Yang Yi, sharing some of the famous people’s confidential, genuine secrets, now holding nothing back.
It was a blatant, unreserved splurge, although showing off wealth could sometimes be embarrassing, it wasn’t for Walter when he was on the receiving end.
The relationship between the two quickly warmed, at least Yang Yi and Walter had struck one of the "three iron rules" of brotherhood.
After lunch, they both took a car back to headquarters.
In terms of rank, Yang Yi was a newcomer, and in terms of status, he was just an ordinary staff member, but Yang Yi was definitely not just an ordinary employee, so Walter had to give some thought to how to arrange Yang Yi’s position.
"Here is your office."
After smiling at Yang Yi, Walter raised his voice and loudly said, "Everyone, stop your current tasks for a moment; I want to introduce a new colleague, Yang Yi. He has been working overseas all this time and just returned to headquarters yesterday. From now on, he’ll be part of your department."
Having a private office was out of the question.
Yang Yi’s office had six desks, now occupied by two women and three men.
The new colleagues began to applaud politely, and Yang Yi bowed slightly before saying loudly, "Thank you, everyone, I’m sure we’ll have a very pleasant working relationship."
Walter gestured and said, "Alright, Yang Yi has just arrived, and there’s a lot he doesn’t understand yet. He’ll need your help. I’ll take him to familiarize with the environment, and you can continue with your work."
With his direct superior personally endorsing him, Yang Yi knew his working environment would be much more relaxed in the future.
"Now, let’s go get your ID, and then, it’s time to issue you a gun. What kind of gun do you like?"
"Uh, can I choose any?"
"Of course, the CIA definitely has its perks. What do you like?"
"I’m fine with anything, a Sig or a Glock would do."
Walter shook his head repeatedly and said, "No, no, even in choosing guns, there’s a hierarchy of contempt. Americans love the M1911, they love large calibers. If you choose a Glock, some might look down on you, especially for our issued firearms. Since you’re unlikely to use your issued gun, you should definitely go for a 1911."
Yang Yi chuckled, "Why would I not use my issued gun?"
Walter looked at Yang Yi and said, "You need to get used to the new environment, buddy. You don’t have law enforcement authority in the US, and it’s not like you’re going to be in shootings every day, right? If you need a gun, you’re better off using an untraceable ’ghost gun’, get my point? What gun do you like? I can get you an unnumbered ghost gun, but as for your issued weapon, let’s just pick a 1911. Oh, you can choose your favorite finish; normally, you don’t get to choose that, but I’ll take care of it since I’m bringing you there."
