Chapter 962: Chapter 967: Just Showing Off Wealth

Yang Yi was now bound to the CIA. Regardless of his true identity or the reasons for entering the CIA, Porter’s recent actions had tied him firmly to the agency.

It was expected, and within reason. Although he could no longer escape from the CIA’s watch as before, gains always come with losses, right?

Now, there was a perfect start.

As the Deputy Director of the CIA, Porter couldn’t possibly handle everything himself. After giving Yang Yi a few encouraging words, he left.

What was left was Walter’s matter.

Walter, after taking a long breath, seriously said to Yang Yi, "Now, it’s just the two of us."

"Yes, what’s up?"

"Nothing, just... do you have a place to stay?"

Yang Yi had planned to rough it out in Walter’s office for the night. Of course, it would be better if Walter could find him a place to sleep.

"No."

"It’s quite late now..."

Walter glanced at his watch and said, "It’s already past eleven. It’s too late to go home. We could stay here randomly for the night or go to a hotel in the city center. I can drive you there."

Yang Yi was somewhat surprised because he didn’t expect his first boss at the CIA to be so... interesting.

"Really?"

"Of course."

"Okay then, let’s go. To be honest, I’m a bit hungry now. Hasn’t anyone thought to bring me something to eat today?"

"It’s not just you who hasn’t eaten. I’m pretty hungry too."

"You pick the place, I’ll treat."

Walter seemed a bit coy and said, "Is that appropriate?"

"I have money!"

Walter immediately brightened up and said, "Okay then, I know a good place. It’s open 24 hours. Their steaks and pancakes are quite good. Let’s go; my car is outside."

Walter drove an old Ford that was somewhat dated. Upon getting into the car, Yang Yi couldn’t help saying, "Given your salary, driving this car seems a bit... sorry."

Walter started the car, a resigned expression on his face as he said, "I have two ex-wives and four kids."

"Er..."

"I have a question. How does it feel to be a billionaire?"

Yang Yi couldn’t help but look at Walter. Shrugging, Walter said, "I’m just curious. Purely curious."

"Hmm, can’t you imagine the pleasure of being rich?"

Walter shrugged and replied, "I’ve seen many rich people, but I never had the chance to ask one how it feels, buddy."

"The feeling is... if it’s just about enjoyment, you wouldn’t know how to spend all the money."

Walter took a deep breath and remarked, "That must be nice."

They fell silent for a moment, then Yang Yi said quietly, "The CIA’s budget is pretty ample, isn’t it?"

"It’s ample depending on how you look at it. You don’t think every agent lives the life of 007, do you?"

"Of course not. I know actually being an agent isn’t so easy, right? Especially for the staff at headquarters, it’s not much different from an ordinary government employee."

"Yes, so although the budget is quite sufficient, having sufficient funds and us having money are two different matters."

Yang Yi pondered for a moment, then said in a deep voice, "Tonight, let me treat. I mean I’ll cover everything, whatever you want to do."

Walter was taken aback and hurriedly said, "No, no, no, I didn’t mean that. Don’t get me wrong."

Yang Yi smiled and said, "Boss."

"Don’t call me boss; it feels even weirder."

"Alright, Walter. Remember what I told you just now? If it’s just about enjoyment, I wouldn’t even know how to spend all the money, so you really don’t need to be polite with me. I have no intention of giving you money, but when it comes to treating someone to a meal, you’re better off not being courteous with me. In fact, if you take me to those eateries that you think are good value for money, it might make me feel like the places are beneath my standard. You know what I mean?"

Walter stood silent for a while, then said, "So you mean you don’t care if the taste is good, only whether the price matches your status?"

"It’s about whether it matches my wallet."

"I see."

Walter stopped talking, but after driving on for a while, he suddenly said, "I don’t want you to think I’m trying to take advantage of you. I just think staying at headquarters is not a good choice, and while I’m really envious of your wealth, I don’t want to accept bribes or take advantage of you."

Yang Yi smiled and replied, "I understand, really, truly, I do. But think about it this way; we’re colleagues now, and you’re my superior. We share a secret that could get us both killed, which means, in the future, if I want to relax and have a meal with someone, it could only be with you. What does that mean? It means that if we’re not on good terms, my life would have no joy. So, since I am quite wealthy and treating you doesn’t violate any rules, why not?"

Walter heaved a sigh, "That sounds quite reasonable, but doing so... might cost me my job and position. I worked hard to get to where I am and wouldn’t want to lose it all for the sake of indulgence."

"Is that likely?"

"It’s still possible."

Yang Yi smiled and said, "Then don’t tell anyone."

After thinking it over, Walter suddenly laughed and said, "You were right about earlier; only five people know a big secret. You, me, the Deputy Director, Dave, and Coit; just the five of us. Do you know how much pressure I’m under? I’m really nervous right now. I shouldn’t be telling you this, but if I don’t tell you, who else could I tell? Keeping this stress bottled up can lead to trouble. If you’ve ever had psychological counselling, you’d understand."

"That’s right. I think so too."

Walter smiled, "Okay, then let’s book a room at the best five-star hotel and call room service to prepare the best dinner for us late at night."

"Why book a room?"

Walter paused, "Isn’t one enough?"

Yang Yi shrugged, "If possible, let’s book two suites. Then order whatever services you want. You understand what I mean, right?"

Walter hesitated, then whispered, "I occasionally use... public funds like this, in extremely rare cases, but this is your own money, isn’t it? Is there really a need to..."

Yang Yi smiled and asked, "If there were several women you find marvellous in your room tonight, would you feel guilty towards your wife?"

"I’m divorced; I’m single now."

"Then there’s no problem. Listen, we’ll book two of the best rooms so we don’t bother each other. Then order whatever services you want, like having ten or eight beauties throw a party with you, drink the alcohol you like, eat the food you want, have someone wash and dry your clothes and deliver them to you. Um, I don’t want to give too many examples. Overall, I’ll take care of the bill tomorrow."

Walter whispered, "This might be too extravagant. But okay, I get it. I really do need to de-stress today. Thanks, but this isn’t to become a habit."
