Chapter 749: Chapter 754: Conceding Defeat
"Using an old fox to hunt another old fox is a good idea, but how do you know these old men are the Black Devils you’re looking for?"
"We just arrived last night, and by that time you had already done a lot. I didn’t think you were the Black Devils until I saw the surveillance footage, saw your way of fighting. I knew then that only the Black Devils could be such tough bastards. Actually, I didn’t even need to see the footage, just understanding the flow of the battle would have told me it was the work of the Black Devils. No one else could have pulled it off."
Yarebin sounded quite irritated as he said, "When you’re that strong, it’s hard to stay hidden. So, how did you trail us here?"
"I knew someone was hung from the streetlights outside the government building, then I used a drone to follow your people here."
Brian told the truth, which left Yang Yi a bit helpless, but he knew that eventually, these things couldn’t be hidden. Might as well spill the beans since the Black Devils wouldn’t be giving them another chance anyway.
"It was a drone indeed!"
Yarebin exclaimed with a sense of resignation, "Deyo did well this time. He found the right people to deal with us. Times have changed. The young ones today have no idea how we operated back in our day. But the saying ’ignorance is bliss’ suits Deyo well. Are old men the same as they used to be? The Black Devils, the aging Black Devils, mere mortals can only tremble before them."
The Black Devils were always proud. Yang Yi had already seen this pride in Anton, although Anton wasn’t a true Black Devil yet. Anton’s praises for the Black Devils and boastings about being on their reserve team were more like tributes from outsiders. Yarebin’s words sounded much like self-flattery.
To Yang Yi’s great surprise, Anton actually snorted in disdain.
Anton’s attitude was a bit intriguing.
Anna continued with a detached tone, "Why would you be hired by Deyo? Are you a mercenary, or something else?"
"Not a mercenary, mercenaries are too low level. I’ve told you, we do everything. We solve problems others can’t handle. Of course, solving problems by force is also within our scope of services."
"I’m very interested, it seems like our kind of model. Please explain it to me in detail."
"After getting out of prison, I spent a few months in Russia. I realized to fulfill my wish I needed both money and people. Then I went to the United Kingdom. To gather enough money, I had to return to my old ways. I started on my own, pulled off a few robberies, got enough startup capital, then I contacted the necessary channels. Alone, I carried out a few assassinations, then I recruited people and opened a private defense consulting firm."
"Private defense consulting firm?"
"Yes, a private defense consulting firm. We do everything—eavesdropping, theft, assassination, plan development, direct armed intervention, helping with cleaning up. In short, we do it all, as long as the price is right."
"So, what work have you done for Deyo?"
"Twice, one assassination, and then this time?"
"Where did you meet with Deyo this time?"
"We didn’t meet. He just made a call. He planned to pay ten million US dollars for me to come to Kiev. I thought it was too little at first, didn’t want to come, but after watching the footage, I decided I would, and bring Deyo’s men along."
"So, you can’t find Deyo?"
This time, Brian didn’t answer Yarebin’s question.
Brian was full of lies, not a word of truth escaped his lips, of course, had he truly been forthcoming with Yarebin, answering all questions with honesty, that would have been exceedingly foolish.
Brian said gravely, "Now it’s your turn."
"No, you continue."
Brian said helplessly, "I can’t find Deyo, he’s been extremely cautious lately, because he’s scared out of his wits. In the war with Big Ivan, it can’t be said for certain that he’ll fail, but now he has little hope for victory. Deyo misjudged the situation and got tied to the United States’ chariot with no way to get off. He can only stick it out to the end, otherwise, he’ll lose everything. We all know how ruthless Big Ivan can be, so Deyo definitely has to be more careful."
"Can you get in touch with Deyo?"
"I can, but it’s pointless. Deyo now doesn’t even dare stay in one place for too long. I can get in touch with him, but there’s no way to know where he’s living, much less see him, especially now that all the people he’s sent out are dead, he can’t possibly trust me anymore."
After saying that, Brian looked at Yarebin and added, "You know my trump card, I will answer whatever you want to know. It’s been over 20 years; I’ve waited too long. Meeting you now is my only chance to get answers. I admit defeat!"
Brian’s tone was very mournful, but Yang Yi let out a sigh of relief because Brian’s thinking of using Yarebin showed he, at least, hadn’t lost his mind.
Yarebin said with emotion, "How much must you hate them to have endured 20 years in the black prison?"
Brian whispered, "At the beginning, it was hatred, hate that’s etched in my bones. All I could think about was finding all those who wronged me after I got out and killing them, in the most brutal way possible. But after a few years in prison, the hatred I thought would never fade wasn’t as intense."
Brian paused for a moment, then said earnestly, "What actually kept me going was love, ridiculous, isn’t it? But it was love, I just wanted to live so I could find Kate and ask her what she really thought, ask her if she truly loved me. In truth, I just wanted to see her again."
Yang Yi believed the sincerity in Brian’s words. To win over the Black Devil, you need to speak the truth. But it wasn’t just about convincing Yarebin; he simply wanted to say those things.
Yarebin must have believed Brian, then he said quietly, "Now I will tell you the truth, Kate was KGB’s swallow, her approach was to turn you, Antoine set up the ruse that deceived you. There was never any two million US dollars, nor was it an order from me. After Antoine got what he wanted, he sold you out as part of a premeditated plan, so his death wasn’t due to a guilty conscience but accidental discharge."
Well, another twist. Yang Yi was numb to these by now.
But then again, it wasn’t exactly a twist, was it? Since Brian never spoke a word of truth, how could Yarebin be expected to speak honestly? Even with his last sentence, Yang Yi already found it hard to believe, despite Yarebin’s seemingly candid manner.
And Brian, he simply continued along with Yarebin’s revelations, whispering, "I knew Kate was KGB. I found out before I decided to defect. She told me her real name, Annastasia, she told it to me herself. She wanted to leave everything behind with me, but I knew, how could we possibly go? So contacting Antoine was my own choice, and I knew everything before he showed up. I thought I could continue to be with Kate after defecting; I chose to be a traitor, willingly becoming a mole, thinking my identity was enough for you to invest in long-term. But I didn’t expect you’d sell me out the moment you had the intel, so I was just a fool blinded by love, not the lab rat you thought I was."
After a long time, Brian added discontentedly, "To think it was Annastasia who defected first, that I truly did not anticipate."
Brian pleaded, "Now you know everything, please tell me, tell me where Kate is now!"
Yarebin fell silent for a moment, then said softly, "Annastasia isn’t dead, and she hasn’t been on any missions since that incident, because her mental health issues made her unsuitable for further operations. She was sent to a sanatorium, in effect, house arrest, until the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she stayed in that sanatorium."
Brian’s breathing quickened as he urged, "Then where is she now, tell me, I beg you!"
