Chapter 682: Chapter 688 The Overall Situation Takes Precedence
Yang Yi felt it was necessary to remind Jethro of his speculation, but he quickly dismissed the idea. However, Brian needed to be notified immediately.
Yang Yi called Brian for the second time, sharing his suspicions and concerns, but Brian simply responded with an indifferent smile after hearing Yang Yi’s conjecture.
"Our target is Black Devil, not Big Ivan. Big Ivan’s life or death is irrelevant to us. If someone new has taken Big Ivan’s place..."
After a moment’s silence, Brian continued in a low voice, "I’ll make a slight adjustment to the surveillance points. If it’s a newcomer in power, they should be incapable of mounting a counterattack in the short term, but they’ll definitely have to retaliate eventually, it’s just a matter of time. Don’t tell Jethro about this guess, let them continue with the current plan."
In a low voice, Yang Yi said, "This simple matter, I think Jethro and Corkdor will sooner or later figure it out."
"It’s just a hypothesis, not necessarily reality. Even if it becomes reality and Jethro and the others really do figure it out, then let them discover it on their own. You’re just a bodyguard, no need to overthink it."
Yang Yi hung up the phone, and since he couldn’t discuss this with Jethro, he temporarily had nothing to do.
But this time, Jethro didn’t make him wait too long.
"Boya is out! The operation was very successful, he’s going to be okay!"
Jethro personally delivered this good news to Yang Yi, and his tone was full of joy.
"That’s great, that’s really great!"
Although a double-dealer, Yang Yi was genuinely happy for Boyata. After all, he was only following Jethro to gather intelligence, not to take him down, and Boyata certainly had nothing to do with him.
"Corkdor will be arriving soon, and I’ll be meeting with him shortly. There shouldn’t be any problems, but still, bring the brothers over. Corkdor might ask you about the firefight, since only you engaged the enemy at close range."
"Okay, I’ll be right there!"
Yang Yi stood up and said to Rodriguez, "Call everyone, we’re going to the hospital."
They reached the hospital quickly, and Yang Yi met Jethro directly in the corridor.
Jethro looked exhausted but relieved as if he had a narrow escape from death.
"The doctor said if Boya had been brought in just five minutes later, he would’ve been gone for sure."
Having seen Yang Yi, the first thing Jethro talked about was Boyata. He grabbed Yang Yi’s hand and said with emotion, "Boya has been with me for many years. I couldn’t bear the thought of what would happen if he died. Although it’s common in our line of business, the fact that Boya didn’t die, really, it’s such a relief."
After shaking Yang Yi’s hand vigorously for a while, Jethro looked scared as he said, "Thank goodness you broke through the enemy’s defense; thank goodness we were less than twenty kilometers from Zaporozhye, otherwise, it really would’ve been too late."
In a low voice, Yang Yi asked, "How is Boya now?"
"He’s still not out of danger completely; he was shot in the lungs, and it’s a miracle he’s alive. But as long as there are no serious complications, he should be able to pull through,"
With a light sigh, Jethro said in a low voice, "He won’t be able to work for half a year. Also, the medical facilities here are limited. I want to transfer him to a better hospital, but Boyata can’t be moved for the time being. He’ll have to recover here for a while."
After talking about Boyata, Jethro continued in a low voice, "We’ve identified the people who attacked us. Someone has already gone to clean up the battlefield. Those soldiers were stationed at a checkpoint in Zaporozhye. We still don’t know whose orders they were following, but it’s clear that someone ordered them, and that’s why they left their station to intercept us."
"Can’t it be investigated?"
Jethro shrugged and spoke softly, "There are only a few people with the authority to deploy an entire checkpoint’s soldiers. If we investigate, it won’t take long to find out. As of now, there are only four candidates: the direct commander of that checkpoint, but a minor captain can’t be Big Ivan’s man. Then there are three officers from the Zaporozhye garrison—the highest-ranking officer who has the authority to deploy any soldier, the second-in-command, and the officer in charge of all checkpoints. Who exactly issued the order, we don’t yet know, but we will soon."
While Jethro and Yang Yi were still talking, Anton, who was waiting outside the ward, suddenly said over the walkie-talkie in a low voice, "Corkdor is coming."
Yang Yi gestured to Jethro, and they both stopped talking and went to wait outside Boyata’s intensive care unit.
Corkdor arrived with just two people, hurrying over.
"How’s Boyata doing?"
"He’s okay, should be fine."
Corkdor took a deep breath and then patted Jethro on the shoulder, saying softly, "I’m really sorry about what happened to Boyata, but as long as he survives, everything will be alright."
Jethro managed a smile and said, "Thank you."
Corkdor gestured for Jethro to follow, saying, "I understand how you’re feeling right now, but I have to talk to you about some things. Please come with me; the hospital has arranged a quieter place for us."
Corkdor led Jethro to a doctor’s office, this time not asking Yang Yi to leave.
In the doctor’s office, neither of them sat down. Corkdor went straight to the point, "The person behind this attack has been found—it was an officer from the Zaporozhye garrison, bought by Big Ivan. As soon as he received news of Feyel’s death, he immediately dispatched the checkpoint closest to your location to set an ambush."
Jethro frowned and asked, "Is it that simple?"
Corkdor spoke very seriously, "It really is that simple. At first, I also thought this could be a signal that Big Ivan was making a move, but after the investigation, it turned out to be much less complicated. It was just the action of an officer, who had been bought by Big Ivan, and who also had a very good personal relationship with Feyel, which is why he acted immediately upon hearing about Feyel’s assassination. Of course, he was also thinking of protecting himself."
Jethro said in a stern voice, "Tell me who this officer is."
Corkdor gave a troubled smile and said, "I didn’t say his name because I knew you’d definitely want to settle the score with him, but right now we have more important things to do. We need to go to Odessa, buddy. Do me a favor; since this isn’t a signal that Big Ivan is emerging, we need to get to Odessa as quickly as possible, because there’s a good opportunity waiting for us there."
Without a word, Jethro listened as Corkdor pleaded, "Buddy, I understand how you feel, but the one who hurt Boyata won’t get away. He will be dealt with. It’s better for us to get to Odessa as soon as possible; we really can’t delay matters there."
Jethro exhaled softly, "Alright, the bigger picture must come first."
