Chapter 683: Chapter 689: Take Action Now

Corkdor had arrived by plane, and not just any plane, but a military aircraft, so when heading to Odessa, Yang Yi and the others also boarded a military transport plane.

Jethro was responsible for dealing with the small fry, while Corkdor took charge of the big players. This division of labor had been clearly established. Although Kanchelskis wasn’t particularly high-ranking, his role was indeed very significant, which was why Corkdor personally took on the task of flipping Kanchelskis.

But now, it seemed that Corkdor had different ideas.

"A batch of cargo is about to leave port, and it’s very important. We need to make contact with Kanchelskis as soon as possible. The best outcome would be to flip him, but if that’s not possible, then we must sabotage the shipment."

The noise inside the military transport was deafening, and heaven knows why Corkdor had chosen such a mode of transportation. It was impossible for Jethro to speak at a lower volume.

"Go directly to see Kanchelskis?"

"Yes, find him directly."

"That’s very dangerous. Kanchelskis is important and won’t have too few guards around him. If Kanchelskis means you harm, it would be very difficult for us to protect your safety. You should at least let Ferdinand bring more people over."

Corkdor was silent for a while, then lowered his voice slightly and said to Jethro, "There may have been some changes."

"What changes?"

"Today, L caught one of Big Ivan’s men. He said he hasn’t received any instructions from Big Ivan these days, only commands from a stranger called Lamu."

"Lamu? A fake name? Big Ivan’s underlings don’t seem to include anyone named Lamu."

Corkdor took a deep breath and nodded, "Yes, if it hasn’t been Big Ivan all this time but instead someone called Lamu making moves, then our opportunity has come. The Americans are targeting Big Ivan, while our target is Big Ivan’s territory. So L will continue searching for Big Ivan, but we can slightly hasten our process."

Jethro spoke urgently, "Wait, do you mean Big Ivan is dead?"

"No, no one knows whether Big Ivan is alive or dead right now. I’m just saying the latest intelligence from L indicates that Big Ivan has never shown up directly. Although Big Ivan might just be hiding behind the scenes, but if—he is dead?"

Jethro shrugged, "Then it’s time for a newcomer to take over. If a newcomer steps up, then we’ve definitely won."

Corkdor smiled, "That’s why we must contact Kanchelskis immediately. His stance is crucial. If we can win over Kanchelskis and sabotage the deal they’re about to make, we might be able to test whether Big Ivan is truly in Ukraine."

"How do the Americans see it?"

"L still believes Big Ivan is in Ukraine, because all the intelligence they’ve obtained points to Big Ivan being there. Even though the latest confession contradicts the previous intelligence from the Americans, after all, it’s just the testimony of one person."

Jethro spoke gravely, "Alright, we’ll go find Kanchelskis, but why not let Ferdinand bring more people?"

Corkdor shrugged, "Ferdinand isn’t suitable for this. My thought is that I should meet Kanchelskis personally. If he knows what’s good for him, that would be best. If he doesn’t, you’ll need to stay behind and sabotage his transaction. I can’t stay in Odessa too long, as I must focus my efforts on Kyiv."

After speaking, Corkdor said gravely, "I know you’re skilled at these things, you can handle it, right?"

"Yes, I can handle it."

"Once we get to Odessa, we’ll operate separately. I’ll go talk to Kanchelskis, and you should not show your face. Stay hidden with your team. If my recruitment fails, you’ll immediately start undermining Kanchelskis covertly."

"Just try once? Recruiting someone rarely succeeds on the first attempt. You won’t try a few more times?"

Corkdor shook his head, "There’s no time left. We can’t waste too much time and effort on Kanchelskis. We’ll only give him one chance. If he doesn’t take the hint, sabotaging his trade will have the same effect."

Jethro spoke gravely, "Okay, we’ll do as you say."

Yang Yi was sitting not far from Jethro, and he faintly heard the conversation between the two men.

The supposed secret matter seemed to be no secret at all. Yang Yi merely suspected that Big Ivan might not even be in Ukraine, but Corkdor seemed to have gathered more evidence. Although still unable to fully prove his conjecture, it at least suggested that his conjecture was possible.

Corkdor and Jethro didn’t talk much more after that. When the plane landed at a military airport in Odessa, three cars transported them towards the city. However, Corkdor parted ways with Jethro directly on the road without reaching the downtown area of Odessa.

Jethro and Corkdor operated separately. After being driven to the city center of Odessa, Jethro’s arrangement was first to have Sergei and his people purchase two cars, and then to have Roman book several rooms at a hotel.

Usually, Boyata would handle these matters, but since Boyata was injured, whoever was suitable had to take over.

After quickly eating something outside, by the time they checked into the hotel, it was already late. Yang Yi thought that there wouldn’t be any results until at least the next day, but to his surprise, news from Corkdor came that very evening.

After calling Yang Yi into his room, Jethro said with a serious face, "Corkdor failed. Kanchelskis rejected the recruitment, but the good news is that Kanchelskis didn’t try to have him killed."

"What should we do now?"

Jethro thought for a moment, then said gravely, "Do you remember what we talked about before? The big guns. Since those are the main goods of the deal this time, I think it’s time to get our hands on them."

Yang Yi asked in a low voice, "How do we get them?"

"Find Hubert. He’s said he knows Kanchelskis’s brother-in-law; he’s a usable person. We can’t show up ourselves. Since Kanchelskis refused to be recruited, the question is whether his brother-in-law would dare to sell us those big guns. Therefore, I need someone to act on my behalf."

"Who can you find to act on your behalf?"

Jethro thought for a moment, then said, "It should be an arms dealer who has no connection with us but is indeed a dealer. Such a person is easy to find."

"When do we start?"

"Right now."

Jethro patted Yang Yi’s shoulder and whispered, "Corkdor has already set off back to Kyiv, and now we must begin handling things. First the big guns. If we can’t get them, we’ll simply destroy Kanchelskis’s warehouse. Either blow it up or set fire to it. No matter what, we can’t allow him to complete the shipment smoothly. However, Kanchelskis can’t die; keeping him alive, we can still see whether he’ll make contact with Big Ivan."
