Chapter 681: Chapter 687: The Newcomer Rises
Chris seemed very hesitant, and after wrestling with himself for a long while, he finally said to Yang Yi, "My thoughts might be incorrect."
Yang Yi pointed at Chris, then impatiently said, "Spit it out!"
"I think, if I get injured, the question is whether to let a queer treat me or not to let him treat me."
Seeing that Yang Yi was about to lose his temper, Chris hurried his words, "While life is more precious, the thought of a pair of hands touching me all over, even if he’s trying to save me..."
After shuddering, Chris urgently said, "I can’t stand it!"
Yang Yi felt a chill in his heart when Rodriguez urgently said, "Boss, boss, we..."
"Stop, don’t talk."
Yang Yi waved his hand at Rodriguez and said, "Forget it, we’ll find a suitable doctor ourselves. Let’s pass on Dr. James."
Rodriguez let out a big sigh of relief and smiled, "That’s what I was going to say. We haven’t even started looking properly, so why rush to decide on Dr. James? We can take our time to find the right one."
He hadn’t even asked others; just asking the two people around him was enough, but the actual reason was that what Chris had said also made Yang Yi feel a chill inside.
Yang Yi was very tired. He hadn’t slept at all last night, had fought a sniping battle, and then had engaged in close combat. Now, he really felt somewhat sleepy.
"I’ll take a nap. You two keep an eye out. Chris, take someone and find a place outside the hotel to hide, and warn us if any suspicious people approach."
After instructing Chris to keep watch, Yang Yi lay down on the bed. His mind was still fixated on where to find a doctor, and he didn’t know when he eventually drifted off to sleep.
When he woke up, Yang Yi opened his eyes and saw Rodriguez hugging a rifle, sitting in a chair watching the door, with a look of utter boredom on his face.
Looking at his watch, it was already two in the afternoon, and Yang Yi had slept for roughly five hours.
"Boss, you’re awake."
"Add ’asleep.’ Otherwise, it sounds awkward. Any news from Boyata yet?"
"None."
No news is good news. It’s been over five hours; if no word has come from Boyata, that at least meant he was still being resuscitated. If he was still being resuscitated, it meant he wasn’t dead yet.
After some thought, Yang Yi still decided to give Anton a call.
"Hello, what’s the situation now?"
"Still in the operating room. Jethro has been pacing around the surgery room—I fell asleep in a chair in the hallway. Officials from Zaporozhye have arrived, and Corkdor will be coming soon, too—he might arrive any minute."
Yang Yi felt slightly relieved. Since officials from Zaporozhye arrived, it meant that the higher-ups in the Ukrainian government were making moves, so the likelihood of being completely annihilated by an army while trapped in the hotel was slim.
However, the fact that Corkdor would be coming was indeed beyond Yang Yi’s expectations. Since Boyata was just Jethro’s assistant, Corkdor couldn’t possibly be coming for Boyata. If he wasn’t coming specifically for Boyata, then Corkdor must have been taking the attack very seriously.
He estimated that it was all about figuring out who made a move on Jethro. Now, Corkdor wasn’t willing to let any action from Big Ivan’s side go unnoticed.
"Ask Jethro, now that the situation has stabilized, do we need to go over?"
Anton quickly found Jethro and, after whispering a few words to him, once again said to Yang Yi, "Better not to come over for now. You guys wouldn’t be of any help if you did, and there are a lot of people here. It’s not very convenient. Boyata will call you after he comes out of the operating room."
Yang Yi whispered back, "Alright, then we’ll wait a bit longer. Let me know as soon as Boyata is out."
After hanging up the phone, Yang Yi thought for a long time. He still wanted to find a doctor quickly, but apart from Dr. James, he didn’t have any other suitable candidates at the moment, so it was useless to be anxious. Meals need to be eaten one bite at a time; this matter was never going to be resolved overnight.
Once he dismissed the idea of finding a doctor for now, Yang Yi inevitably started considering his current predicament.
Brian had his people watching the surveillance monitors every day. Not only that, but they had also tapped into the internal communications of the Kiev police force, mainly the dispatch center. They would be the first to know of any calls to the police anywhere, and if it was something Brian was interested in, they would use the public surveillance cameras in the Kiev area to get a closer look at the situation.
But so far, Brian had found nothing. Big Ivan’s influence seemed to have completely withdrawn from Kiev—there was no sign of any activity.
Following Jethro for the past few days had achieved quite a bit, and they had inflicted some hits on Big Ivan’s forces. However, the ones Yang Yi had access to were just minor players within the Big Ivan group. While the actions of the past few days were successful, it was evident that they hadn’t hurt Big Ivan too deeply.
In fact, it was not until today that Big Ivan retaliated against their actions—and it was only potentially from Big Ivan, which left Yang Yi truly unable to ascertain what was going on with Big Ivan’s side.
If you said Big Ivan was strong, Big Ivan was indeed strong enough—managing to wipe out the United States’ most elite forces sent against him, and directly causing an open split within the Ukrainian military. General Hagel, whom Deyo had been scheming to win over, outright declared his support for Big Ivan. Although the Ukrainian government was now making concerted efforts to remove General Hagel, it was not easy to take action against someone of such high rank. As long as General Hagel remained in office for a day, Big Ivan still had a backer in Ukraine.
But if you said Big Ivan was weak, his lack of response to his subordinates being continually taken out showed just how weak he was. Regardless of whether they were minor players, as the boss of an organization, allowing his people to be slaughtered without response—unless one was driven to a desperate situation, this kind of scenario seemed unlikely.
Suddenly, Yang Yi considered a possibility—that Big Ivan might not actually be in Kiev, or even in Ukraine. If Big Ivan was truly in control of everything, then such a contradictory situation as the current one wouldn’t exist.
Unless Big Ivan was no longer able to control the situation and the person now in charge was one of Big Ivan’s subordinates, able to mobilize Big Ivan’s most elite forces to retaliate, but this person’s power was clearly not strong enough. They could only look after individual issues but were unable to grasp the overall situation. The most likely, or rather most common, situation for this to happen was a change in leadership.
Someone had taken over Big Ivan’s position and inherited the power left by Big Ivan, but this person needed time to consolidate. He could not yet control a weapons empire as thoroughly as Big Ivan could, and when facing attacks from enemies, he could only focus on the most pressing issues.
Yang Yi stood up, feeling that his speculation was very likely correct. If this was the case, then many of his previous arrangements were wrong—completely wrong.
