Chapter 679: Chapter 685: Medical Soldier

They switched vehicles, changed clothes, but for a small city like Zaporozhye, it was extremely difficult for a few foreigners to completely hide their tracks, so Yang Yi simply stayed at a hotel with his team.

If they were to be attacked again, staying in a hotel would undoubtedly be very dangerous. However, after Jethro took Boyata to the operating room, he was finally able to settle down and deal with the aftermath of their ambush.

Boyata had been taken to the hospital and was in the midst of being resuscitated. Jethro and Corkdor’s connections played a very crucial role, or more precisely, it was Deyo’s connections that were critical.

Whether Boyata would live or die was still unknown, and while Yang Yi was anxious about whether Boyata could hold onto his life, the urgency of adding a good doctor to the Organization of Water had reached an almost obsessive level.

We must have a doctor!

The doctor for the Organization of Water would need to meet a few requirements: first and foremost, they had to keep a tight lip and not leak any secrets. However, achieving this was not easy, and the most plausible, indeed the only feasible, method was to have the doctor join the Organization of Water and never be allowed to leave.

Second, the doctor’s medical skills must be excellent, preferably a surgeon.

Third, it would be best if the doctor had some combat ability, though this could not be insisted upon. Even military physicians are doctors first and foremost; at most, they have better discipline than civilian doctors, but expecting them to possess combat skills is purely wishful thinking, so this third requirement was not essential.

The medical profession is rather unique, very much reliant on experience, especially for a competent surgeon who cannot rely solely on theory but must have extensive clinical experience. And for an experienced doctor, that would mean having worked for several years at the very least.

Being a doctor is quite demanding, especially in Western countries. While it is a high-income, high-status profession, the tuition is high, the education long. After graduation, there’s a period of internship involving examinations, and only when one becomes a competent, independent doctor, they are usually over thirty years old.

There are young doctors, of course, but the good ones who meet the requirements are mostly over thirty. This is even more the case for surgeons, where specialists in cardiac and cerebral vascular diseases are commonly over thirty-five when they can work independently.

By that age, most have already married and started families.

To have a high-income, respectable doctor with a family give up everything to join the Organization of Water—especially when they could enter but not leave—Yang Yi felt confident that money alone couldn’t win over people’s hearts.

The usual recruitment methods would certainly not work. So the most realistic approach was either to look for abnormal individuals who sought thrills rather than a comfortable life or to find those with no other options, for whom joining the Organization of Water was the only way out.

Of course, another possibility was to force someone into a corner, to "recruit" them through pressure, but this method not only felt wrong but was also detrimental to the long-term development of the Organization of Water. Yang Yi would not choose this path unless absolutely necessary.

Of course, if there was no other way, Yang Yi was ready to use any underhanded method necessary to force someone to join the Organization of Water.

"Brian, we’ve been attacked. Boyata’s been shot. He’s in the hospital right now. Our situation is bad but not too terrible."

"Who did it?"

"Jethro is looking into it, but that’s not the point. The key question is, do you know where we can find a good doctor? I must! Must! Must! find us a good doctor!"

"A doctor?"

"Yes, we need to find a doctor."

Although he knew that Brian had become disconnected from society, with no other choice, Yang Yi still had to inquire with Brian first.

"Does the Magic Box Squadron have a specialized doctor? Someone both reliable and skilled in medical practice, and capable of moving with the team?"

Brian laughed, then said in a deep voice, "Magic Box doesn’t have its own doctor. Most of the time, Magic Box is stationed abroad, and the idea of a doctor moving with the team is even more impossible. We only have medics, but even the number of medics is very limited, and their skills are mediocre at best."

Yang Yi was disappointed and said, "I thought the best squadron would have the best doctors."

"No, no, no. A special forces base definitely has doctors, not the best ones, but certainly above average. As for medics, let’s put it this way: special forces either operate deep behind enemy lines or on short-term missions. Plus, a team like Magic Box always has support and very reliable evacuation measures, so... Magic Box has almost never used medics. The team has medics on the roster, but they’re hardly ever needed."

Yang Yi was somewhat disappointed, but Brian’s answer was within his expectations. Since Brian was of no help, Yang Yi quickly called Zhang Yong.

"Brother Yong, how are things on your end?"

"Not great. What’s with these mercenaries nowadays? There isn’t a single one worth considering. The Mercenary Group, like a damn fool, is snatching up all the capable ones, and the leftovers are at best PMC material, you know what I mean. The kind that does legal PMC work. Finding the good and discreet ones we need is tough."

"The Mercenary Group?"

"You don’t know? They are currently the largest mercenary group. I mean actual mercenaries, not the regular PMCs like Deyang International. The largest and the strongest, with the most formidable overall strength."

Before Yang Yi could ask more, Zhang Yong continued irritably, "Everyone in the circle says the Mercenary Group has taken a big hit. I wonder who made them suffer. It’s not a big deal that they’re taking heavy losses, but they’re offering such attractive conditions for recruiting capable fighters. With their reputation, it’s making it hard for me to find people. Maybe I’ve been out of the loop for too long. If we can’t, maybe we’ll ask more mercenary brokers. But mercenary brokers are usually linked with mercenary groups, and it’s not convenient to find independent mercenaries."

Yang Yi was speechless, then whispered, "Brother Yong, stop getting sidetracked..."

"How am I getting sidetracked? You asked how work was going, and I had to tell you what’s happening. How can that be considered a digression?"

"Fine, fine, my mistake. Brother Yong, there’s an urgent matter. I want to find a doctor for us, a good doctor! I’m out of ideas here, can you think of something?"

"A doctor? Military doctor? Medic?"

"A doctor, preferably a military doctor!"

"Doctors are hard to find. Regular doctors would have to be crazy to agree to work with mercenaries. Medics might be a bit easier to find, there are quite a few of them retired. Do you need a medic? I can find you one of those."
