Chapter 677: Chapter 683: The Importance of a Will
It wasn’t that Sergei was thick-skinned, but as an assault trooper, how could he possibly be without the standard issue of a bulletproof vest?
There was a small bullet hole on the bulletproof vest, with the bullet embedded in it, but even the impact of a small-caliber bullet was strong. Sergei didn’t feel being hit, only because he was too tense at the moment.
"Quick, see if there’s any usable car!"
Yang Yi pushed Sergei, who was closest to him, then urgently said into the intercom, "Boss, take Boyata and follow us, Anton also get in boss’s car, we’ll drive in front. If we encounter another ambush, then we’ll turn around and head back."
Although they had taken down the enemy without harm, Yang Yi was still frightened after the fact, it was just that the enemies who had blocked the road were too weak. The people he had brought with him might lack some finesse in spy work, but for pure combat, they were most suitable. Roman and his Alpha Trio had worked with exceptional coordination; their tactical literacy was high. Nevertheless, it was a miracle that they had won the battle without any injuries, they could only attribute it to good luck.
Sergei poked his head out of the car window and shouted, "The car’s good, let’s go!"
All three cars had been hit by quite a few bullets, but the car Sergei chose was not the biggest one, it was the fastest one.
Rodriguez urgently called from another car, "Boss, the car’s drivable."
One of the cars had its engine hit and was clearly out of the question, but the remaining two, despite their numerous bullet holes, were still operational.
"You three take the lead, we’ll follow. Sergei, since you three are familiar with the Ukrainian military situation, make sure to stop if you see any military vehicles ahead. We’ll immediately turn around and head back," said Yang Yi as he hastily made arrangements before urgently speaking into the intercom, "Boss, follow us, let’s go!"
After starting the three vehicles, they headed toward Zaporozhye, and only after driving away from the battle scene did Yang Yi begin to consider other matters.
Driving three cars full of bullet holes was definitely not feasible, too conspicuous. If there were others blocking the way ahead, driving such cars would mean revealing their identities. Moreover, entering Zaporozhye in two clearly bullet-ridden military vehicles wasn’t a good approach. In short, not changing cars was not an option.
The only solution was to switch cars, and the only way to switch cars was to requisition other vehicles.
Requisition was just a polite term; to put it bluntly, it was robbery.
Yang Yi and his team were on a highway, which of course wouldn’t be devoid of other travelers. Into the intercom, Yang Yi said urgently, "Roman, Sergei, stop the next car you see, we need to switch vehicles."
"Understood."
No sooner had he finished speaking when a small car came head-on. Sergei, who was driving, didn’t move hastily; he waited until the small car got close before suddenly steering the wheel, blocking the road with his vehicle.
Accompanied by the shrill sound of brakes, a sedan came to a halt on the road. The angry driver, who hadn’t noticed the bullet holes in the car blocking his way, rolled down his window to curse.
As soon as Vitali with a gun in hand ran over, the driver immediately fell silent.
"Your car is being requisitioned by us, get out now!"
Vitali shouted at the driver, who immediately got out, not because of Vitali’s shout, but because of the gun in Vitali’s hand.
"There’s a battle ahead, didn’t you see we were attacked? Listen, don’t go forward or backward. We’re going ahead to intercept the rebels. You’d best find a safe place off the road to hide. Wait until it gets dark before coming out. In any case, get off the highway quickly."
Vitali cunningly warned the driver, then the three of them got into the small car and drove off again.
After switching cars, scouting ahead became easier; at least they wouldn’t be shot on sight.
Yang Yi kept thinking about who had attacked them. From the enemy’s reaction, it seemed they could recognize their cars, otherwise, they wouldn’t have opened fire from a distance. It also might be that they were betrayed by someone. As for whether Feyel’s men were responsible, Yang Yi thought it was unlikely since Feyel’s subordinates would not react so quickly.
He couldn’t concern himself with the distant issues for the time being; figuring out how to save Boyata was the real matter at hand.
Yang Yi asked over the intercom, "How is Boyata?"
The one who answered Yang Yi wasn’t Jethro, but Anton, because Jethro was driving and it was Anton taking care of Boyata now.
"The situation is pretty grim. He’s been shot in the lung. I reckon he’s got one lobe left that’s still functioning, which is why he can still breathe. But he’s lost a lot of blood. I’ve seen wounds like his before—a guy struggled for two hours before he died but another lasted only an hour and a half. I know how to administer first aid, but I’m no surgeon, and I’m powerless in the face of something like this."
Anton answered Yang Yi’s question in detail and even gave an estimated time for how long Boyata might survive.
Boya heard Anton’s words, and then, unexpectedly, he opened his eyes.
"Why is it you?"
Boya’s words were slurred, but Anton could still understand, so he said gruffly, "Why can’t it be me?"
"Buddy, you’re not thinking of killing me and then skimping on that fifty grand, are you?"
Anton was silent for a moment, then he said gravely, "You’ve reminded me, I think that’s a good idea."
Boya cracked a smile more pained than crying and said, "I’m kidding."
Anton shrugged and said, "I’m kidding too."
Boya raised his voice a bit and said, "If I die, give the money to my boss. You can’t weasel out of the money I won."
Anton continued with an expressionless face, "Buddy, I think it would be better for you to leave some last words to your boss than worry about that fifty grand."
All of a sudden, Jethro turned around and yelled, "He’s not going to die!"
Anton went on calmly, "It’s just a precaution. Don’t you understand the importance of last words? Or maybe there’s nothing you’d want to tell him?"
Boya shivered and said, "Boss, I’m not going to die, right?"
With a trembling voice, Jethro said, "No, you can’t die."
Boya tried to smile again and then with a mournful face, he said, "This isn’t like the light at the end of the tunnel, is it?"
Anton promptly said, "He said that himself."
Jethro shouted, "Shut up, shut up, you jerk!"
Anton sniffed and said, "For Boyata’s sake, I’ll forgive you."
In a weak voice, Boya said, "Boss, if I die, you have to find a way to bring me back, bury me in the cemetery, don’t leave me here alone. I hate Ukraine, and... get me a good sound system, one I’ve always wanted but never had the guts to buy, and my favorite music in high definition. Fuck, I don’t want to die..."
Boya fell silent. After Jethro looked back at him, he couldn’t help but yell, "Boya, Boya!"
"Hey."
"Hey!"
Anton interrupted Jethro’s shouting in a louder voice, calmly saying, "He’s not dead just passed out, but now you see the importance of leaving last words in time, right? At least now you know what he wants."
