Chapter 676: Chapter 682: Purge the Remnants
Yang Yi’s plan was to first take out the enemy’s vehicles with a rocket launcher, and then, while the enemy was in chaos, to press forward.
Anton’s idea was to not rush to attack the enemy but to charge close enough for close-quarter combat and then suddenly unleash the strongest firepower to break the enemy.
Whichever approach to the attack was very dangerous, as there was a high chance of casualties.
To save one seriously wounded person by adding several more wounded — from a mathematical perspective, this choice was terrible, but in reality, such decisions were common. It wasn’t unusual to see more than a dozen casualties to save one person, and it was also common to lose additional lives just to retrieve a body, depending on the unit.
Often the stronger the team was in combat, the more likely they were to make what seemed like foolish choices. Those teams who would scatter at the first sign of trouble and buckle under pressure always appeared to make smart choices because teams with too many smart individuals were too busy protecting their own lives. But those who would behave foolishly knew that if they were to be injured, their comrades would not abandon them. Thus, this was what was known as cohesion.
Vitali and Roman, along with their third companion, had no resistance to Yang Yi’s commands; they could very much understand Yang Yi’s choice as soldiers.
As for Rodriguez and Chris, whether they had any opinions or not, they wouldn’t show them.
Roman loaded a full belt of ammunition and then knelt on one knee on the ground, ready for the assault.
Yang Yi set down the sniper rifle and switched to an AK74, but after aiming with it a few times, he once again put down the AK74 and switched back to the sniper rifle. While maintaining a fierce volume of fire was important for the assault, ensuring the precision and lethality of the shots was also crucial, and he would essentially have no effect using the AK74.
Vitali and Sergei hoisted the rocket launchers onto their shoulders, letting their rifles hang below.
Everything was ready. Yang Yi took a deep breath and whispered, "Go!"
Six people leaped up at the same time, hunching over as they sprinted at top speed across the road that was less than twenty meters wide.
Yang Yi felt as if everything in front of him was shaking. He crossed the road, ran down the sloping roadbed, and then suddenly threw himself to the ground, aiming at an enemy who was turning around in shock, and pulled the trigger.
Yang Yi actually wasn’t accustomed to shooting hastily after vigorous activity; he was a spy, not a soldier who fought on the front line, but at life-threatening moments of crisis, it seemed like everyone was able to perform beyond their usual capabilities.
So, surprisingly, Yang Yi’s first shot hit its target.
Roman had charged even further down the slope. He threw himself into a roadside drainage ditch, set up his machine gun, and opened fire on the enemy some three hundred meters away.
After an initial burst of at least fifty rounds, Roman began to do longer bursts of about a dozen rounds each. By the time Roman switched his shooting mode from sweeping fire to longer bursts, Vitali’s rocket had finally been launched.
Some enemies were returning fire, others hurried to their feet trying to find cover behind the vehicles, which would require them to expose themselves on the road — and Anton had stayed in his original position to shoot those who left their cover.
Enemies were rapidly falling; Sergei hastily fired the rocket launcher, then tossed it to the ground, flopped down, and started spraying the thirty rounds in his magazine.
After quickly swapping out his duct-taped magazine, Sergei emptied another thirty rounds.
Shooting a rifle in full-auto had a very low probability of hitting the enemy, but sometimes it wasn’t a waste of bullets, because it was necessary to suppress the enemy. Even if you couldn’t hit them, you had to at least be able to intimidate them.
After firing two magazines, Sergei reloaded with the third, and it was during this reload that he realized the battlefield had gone somewhat quiet.
Only Chris’s rifle was shooting, firing three-round bursts. Other than Chris’s gunfire, there was an abnormal silence on the battlefield.
Roman’s 250-round belt of ammunition was spent, and he was changing magazines, but changing a machine gun’s ammunition was the slowest.
Yang Yi’s twenty-round magazine was also empty, and he was in the process of reloading.
Vitali wasn’t changing magazines, nor was he firing.
After Sergei loaded his third magazine, he, a little too excited, realized that there wasn’t a single moving enemy in sight.
Apart from three enemies struggling on the ground, the rest had either disappeared or were motionless.
Sergei exhaled softly, aimed his rifle at one of the crawling figures, and fired a shot that hit the target. But the crawling person just paused briefly, then continued moving towards the car parked on the road at an even slower pace, until Yang Yi finished reloading and fired another shot, completely killing the enemy.
Sergei was from Ukraine’s Alpha Group. Even though he didn’t stand out in the Organization of Water, it was mainly because most of the operations there didn’t suit his skills. The combat scenario he faced today, right now, was the kind of combat he was most adapted to and familiar with.
Sergei was in the most forward position. He raised his left hand and waved forward twice before standing up and slowly walking towards the enemy with his gun ready.
Roman and Vitali both stood up, and the three of them moved slowly towards the enemy’s position. Rodriguez and Chris also stood up, bending at the waist, following behind Roman and the others as they moved forward.
Yang Yi didn’t get up; instead, he gasped for air and said in a low voice, "Anton, how’s the situation?"
"Six men ran onto the road, and I took them down."
Looking at the ravaged enemy dead and wounded, Yang Yi breathed out and said softly, "We... should be done here, right? Just clear the remaining enemy and we can leave."
Anton replied solemnly, "Understood."
After speaking, Anton didn’t look back but shouted to Jethro, "Start the car and get Boyata into the vehicle. Look for my signal to drive forward!"
Jethro promptly returned to the vehicle, fired up the engine, and when the roar of the engine erupted, Jethro was so moved that he was on the verge of tears.
Exiting the vehicle, he used all his strength to drag Boyata onto the back seat. Quickly returning to the driver’s seat, Jethro watched Anton anxiously.
Sergei and his group had approached the enemy’s location, shot down a soldier rushing from behind a vehicle, and then did a sweep for remaining opposition in the car, ensuring to finish off any wounded still alive. After all this, Sergei radioed, "The remaining enemy has been cleared, we can evacuate now!"
Having issued the retreat command, Sergei looked down at his chest and said in astonishment, "I’ve been shot? I didn’t even feel it."
