Chapter 675: Chapter 681: Sanity and Emotion
An unexpected and puzzling ambush had left only Boyata injured by gunfire thus far, a stroke of luck amidst the misfortune.
If the enemy had allowed Yang Yi’s vehicle to approach within a hundred meters before opening fire, then everyone in the vehicle would have been done for. No matter how talented Yang Yi was, facing a hail of bullets would have been meaningless, and no matter how tough Anton was, he would have ended up as a bullet-riddled hive.
Anton was right, if this battle had been a trap set by Big Ivan, they would be facing completely different adversaries.
It is often said that the will to fight is important, that bravery is key. So where do these aspects truly make a difference in battle?
If the ambushers were very brave, they would dare to wait until their targets were very close before opening fire, which might lead to a messy, chaotic fight. As the ambushing party, they could also suffer casualties, but the most likely outcome would be the annihilation of Yang Yi and his two vehicles’ worth of people.
But if the ambushers were worried about incurring their own casualties in a close-quarters melee, and therefore started firing from three to four hundred meters away, it would be relatively safer, yet it would also give their targets the possibility to escape.
Of course, firing from a distance is not just a matter of courage, it could also be that the ambushers didn’t feel confident enough to wait for the convoy to get closer before they had to open fire. Hence, upon spotting Yang Yi’s convoy, they didn’t hesitate to shoot.
No matter the reason, the enemy started their attack too early. In any case, the combat ability of these ambushers was very average, their lack of experience was certain, and overall, they were quite poor, very poor indeed.
If it were up to Yang Yi to arrange this ambush, then not a single person from the two vehicles would have escaped.
Of course, the best course of action would be to run. The situation now was such that the only way to escape was to turn around and run back, but there was a small problem with running back.
Ahead lay Zaporozhye, less than ten kilometers away, while retreating meant no towns to find a doctor, and Boyata was still alive.
Yang Yi and Boyata did not share a particularly deep friendship, but after having spent so many days together, it was impossible not to have formed some sort of bond. Now, as Boyata was on the brink of death, charging forward offered a glimmer of hope, while retreating was certain death. However, charging forward meant breaking through an encirclement of at least thirty people.
It was a difficult situation, and Yang Yi looked back at Boyata once again.
Jethro looked panicked. He pressed firmly against Boyata’s wound and shouted, "Stay awake! Don’t sleep! Open your eyes, look at me, Boyata, look at me!"
Vitali took an emergency medical kit from the vehicle, rummaged through it for a preloaded morphine syringe, bit open the protective cover of the syringe, and forcefully jabbed it near Boyata’s wound.
As he pushed the medicine into Boyata’s body with force, Vitali bit open another syringe and plunged it in, then he pushed Jethro’s hands aside and poured coagulant powder haphazardly onto Boyata’s wound, placed a piece of gauze on top, and then Vitali shouted loudly, "Press down!"
Jethro turned to Yang Yi, looking very panicked and helpless, yelling at Yang Yi, "Save him! Save him at all costs!"
They were already ambushed—caught in a skirmish. Moving forward might mean encountering even more enemies, but to save one Boyata, should they really continue moving forward?
Yang Yi did not hesitate for too long.
"Fuck!"
After cursing aloud, Yang Yi said in a low voice, "Anton, Roman, you two hold down the enemy here. Vitali, Sergei, and Rod, come with me!"
Yang Yi was about to rise when Anton suddenly turned to him with a look of utter astonishment, "Are you fucking insane?"
The enemy was on the left side of the road, and Yang Yi was on the right, with both sides having cover. Without anyone reaching the road, it would be just suppressive shooting at each other, but if someone got onto the road, they would become an obvious target for shooting. If someone made it to the other side of the road, they could attack the enemy. Of course, they would also be exposed to attacks from the enemy.
The difference between a mercenary and a spy was evident at this moment. If it was a mercenary facing this situation, they would typically choose to push through, kill all the enemies, and carve out a bloody path. However, spies would choose to evade, considering it a waste to spend their lives in a firefight with regular soldiers.
Mercenaries and spies had different definitions of mission success, so naturally, they chose different solutions when facing problems.
Continuing towards Zaporozhye could likely lead to attack after attack, but falling back, getting away from Zaporozhye first, seeking support and cover, or even finding a place to hide would avoid the highly probable attacks. At the very least, it would be much safer than heading directly to Zaporozhye.
Anton couldn’t care less about Boyata’s fate, and Yang Yi shouldn’t either, but Anton could do it, whereas Yang Yi just couldn’t.
"Scatter the enemy, we’re heading to Zaporozhye!"
After saying that to Anton, Yang Yi gestured with his hand before speaking firmly, "The enemy isn’t that tough. If we charge, we could likely scatter them!"
Anton said gravely, "That’s thirty people. Even if only half of them get a shot off at you in time, you’re finished."
How is a heart of stone forged?
Yang Yi knew that every word Anton said was true, but he just couldn’t do it.
Reason and emotion, which one should he yield to?
"Robot, help me, don’t let him die..."
Jethro wasn’t a weak man, but at this moment, his voice carried a sobbing tone. This was the fate of those without manpower—if he had his own team totally under his control, he wouldn’t have to beg Yang Yi for help.
Yang Yi’s emotions, in the end, overwhelmed his reason.
"Vitali! There are rocket launchers in the car; get them all out!"
Yang Yi was determined now, not caring about right or wrong. Jethro had been good to him, Boyata had treated him well, and even if Boyata was near death, as long as there was a glimmer of hope, he had to try. If it was too late, then it was his fate. But if he didn’t try, Yang Yi wouldn’t be able to forgive himself later on.
After all, Yang Yi still felt indebted to Jethro. He had grown accustomed to playing both sides, that was his job, and there was nothing he could do about it. But now, whether to save Boyata or not had nothing to do with his profession.
Vitali ran over dragging a rocket launcher and handed one to Sergei. Then Yang Yi spoke softly, "You two fire the rocket launchers at the enemy’s vehicles. When I say go, we’ll rush to the other side of the road and kill those bastards!"
Anton, annoyed, said, "Wrong choice. Charge first, then fire the rocket launchers. Also, you need the fiercest firepower. I’ll suppress the enemy on my own. The rest of you, all charge over. Roman takes point, and once you’re across, shoot all your bullets. If you can confuse and scatter the enemy, then you win. If the enemy isn’t dazed, then just pray for good luck."
