Chapter 670: Chapter 676: Ways to Gain Advantage

First, they took different paths, and then they converged by chance. This indicated that Anton had also discovered those outposts and circumvented them before choosing the only correct spot.

Without night vision or thermal imaging, Yang Yizhen really wanted to know how Anton managed it.

Yang Yi didn’t even dare to walk quickly. He had to carefully keep at least fifty meters away from the outposts, then silently pass between two of them without making a sound, eventually arriving at the edge of the perimeter wall.

So, how did Anton accomplish this?

Yang Yi was on the verge of losing it because he simply couldn’t figure it out.

Smart people share a common problem. When faced with something they don’t understand, they have to clear it up in their minds to feel comfortable. Right now, Yang Yi was like that. He urgently wanted to know how Anton did it, but he couldn’t ask. And without asking, Yang Yi simply couldn’t make sense of it.

Yang Yi still remembered what he was there to do. Though confused, it didn’t slow him down. He looked up and quickly chose a tree.

The tree he picked had to be tall; the taller, the better. Equipped with night vision goggles, Yang Yi only needed to glance up to know which tree was the tallest and most suitable for a sniping position.

Yang Yi quickly approached a poplar tree, then hugged it and began to climb up.

With the help of high-tech equipment, Yang Yi ultimately gained some advantage—one of which was that he reached the destination faster than Anton. And by arriving earlier than Anton, Yang Yi selected a tree suitable for a sniping position.

Feyel lived inside the military camp, and specifically, in a location towards the inner part of the camp.

Firstly, the primary function of this military camp was an arms depot, and the range of the depot was quite extensive. To avoid air raids, not only did the depot need to be constructed underground or semi-underground, but the various storage rooms also had to be spaced far apart to prevent collateral damage.

Therefore, Feyel’s residence was very far from this perimeter wall. According to intelligence, the straight-line distance from Feyel’s residence to the west side wall was seven hundred meters, and this was the nearest wall. If one were at the eastern wall, it would be impossible to see Feyel’s living quarters.

About two to three hundred meters away from the west wall, nearest to Feyel, there was a guard post. Of course, Feyel wasn’t stupid; he would naturally concentrate forces in the area closest himself.

Climbing over the wall wasn’t impossible, it was just too dangerous. Feyel wasn’t the kind of target worth sacrificing a life to take down, and Yang Yi hadn’t planned to trade his life for Feyel’s—in a suicidal manner, at that. Hence, he naturally had to consider how to escape after eliminating Feyel.

So the only choice for Yang Yi was his current location, as it was the only plausible spot from where he could possibly see Feyel.

It was only a possibility, not a certainty. There might be fewer trees in the military camp, but there were still many large ones. If Yang Yi was unlucky and a tree blocked his view on the way, then it would be impossible for him to take down Feyel with a sniper rifle.

The difficulties faced by Yang Yi were the same for Anton.

So, securing a taller tree earlier could grant a farther view, and with a farther view, one might have the opportunity to take the first shot.

The standard for winning and losing was clear, whoever killed the target would be deemed the winner.

Whether it took one shot or a hundred, victory was victory. Yang Yi had boastfully claimed he would solve the problem with a single bullet. In truth, he hadn’t suffered much disadvantage from this because the sole purpose of the operation was to eliminate Feyel; killing a hundred others would be meaningless.

What mattered was how to fire that first shot. Yang Yi’s position, being slightly higher, naturally gave him an edge, especially since he had already spotted that, after he occupied this large tree, there were no other suitable trees nearby.

The two trees in the vicinity were both rather small, and then further to the left, there was a tall oak that was close to the fence; however, in Yang Yi’s memory, that tree could be slightly off from Feyel’s residence. About thirty meters to the right, there was a taller linden tree, even higher than the one Yang Yi was in, but he judged that the view from there would be completely blocked by a house.

Yang Yi’s judgment was based on a mental map, with the help of precise GPS positioning, which allowed him to make judgments beyond the comprehension of others.

Was this competition about marksmanship? No, it wasn’t about marksmanship at all, but rather the choice of shooting positions, followed by seizing shooting opportunities, and only lastly about marksmanship.

Yang Yi embraced the large tree and began to climb up slowly. His stomach hurt, and to avoid making noise, he couldn’t climb too quickly. While he was halfway up, Anton swayed from left to right, arriving beneath the linden tree Yang Yi had chosen.

Yang Yi was taken aback once again; he couldn’t understand how Anton managed to choose such a precise sniping spot without the use of GPS.

Unless Anton also possessed a brain as gifted as Yang Yi’s, but according to what Yang Yi knew, Anton’s memory wasn’t as phenomenal as his own.

So how exactly did Anton do it?

Anton looked up, and Yang Yi, standing on a rather large branch, instinctively freed a hand to wave at Anton, signaling that he had already occupied this tree and prompting Anton to find another one.

After waving, Yang Yi realized Anton probably couldn’t see him, but to his astonishment, Anton, after looking up briefly, indeed started to search for another tree.

Yang Yi understood that Anton could see in the dark.

After scanning the surroundings once more, Anton finally gave up on other trees and slowly returned, then began to climb the linden tree Yang Yi was in.

Competing against Anton was a matter of honor, as there were no referees, not even spectators. Now that Anton was co-occupying the same tree, it irked Yang Yi to the point where he wanted to kick Anton down the tree.

Where was your pride? How could you settle for being beneath my feet?

Yang Yi felt like grabbing Anton by the collar and questioning him, but he knew if Anton was certain this was the only tree suitable for a sniper position, then no matter how proud, Anton would never switch to another tree.

The linden tree forked at a fairly low height, making it relatively easy to climb a tall one. However, each tree would have only one main branch, and right now, Yang Yi occupied the highest one. He could take his position on the highest branch, and it was only on a sufficiently large branch that one could shoot from a stable position.

So Yang Yi was still quite satisfied, because he had the best spot. For Anton to reach the same height, no suitable branches were available; to find a proper branch, Anton would have to be at least two meters lower than him. No matter what, he had the advantage.
