Chapter 671: Chapter 677: Underfoot
Anton climbed up the tree.
Yang Yi didn’t know what level of a sniper he would be considered, and he had no idea what level Anton would fall into either. However, he felt that he could live without the self-esteem of being a top-notch expert, but Anton must have some, right?
But this time, Anton chose to stay right beneath Yang Yi’s feet.
The linden tree had many forks, and the one Yang Yi had chosen was also quite large. Even the branches that were not part of the main trunk were sufficiently high. However, if a branch was high enough, it might lack strength; and if it had strength, it was often not high enough.
A branch as thick as a thigh was definitely more stable than one as thick as an arm, and so, after much consideration, Anton ended up on a set of branches right below Yang Yi, about two meters lower, but very stable with a branch to rest his gun on.
Yang Yi had the advantage of being two meters taller than Anton. He looked down at Anton, who was calmly resting his gun on a branch, and eventually gave up on mocking him.
Anton was proud when it came to saving face, but shameless when pride didn’t matter.
It was three-thirty in the morning, and now Yang Yi had nothing to do.
The thermal imager could show buildings in the distance and even the movement of people within the camp very clearly. However, the thermal imager only detected heat sources, and since Yang Yi only had a thermal imaging scanner and not a scope, there was no thinking about shooting at night.
Besides, there was only one shot’s chance. Until they could accurately identify targets at night, there was nothing to be done.
Yang Yi and Anton were in their positions, one above the other, quietly waiting for dawn on the tree.
Yang Yi had brought a fifty-power spotting scope because he needed it to help identify the target’s identity.
Since he was waiting anyway, Yang Yi secured his spotting scope to the tree.
With such a high magnification, the spotting scope was unusable when held in hand—it would shake too much to see anything. It needed to be mounted on a tripod, but since that wasn’t possible in a tree, he tied the scope to a branch, ensuring it was stable enough not to wobble.
After setting up his spotting scope, Yang Yi began to prepare his rifle.
In front of Yang Yi there was a horizontal branch and a slanted one; placing his gun on them was just right.
By five o’clock in the morning, the sky began to lighten. As soon as the natural light was sufficient to use the spotting scope, Yang Yi started looking for Feyel’s residence.
As the highest-ranking officer at the armory, Feyel’s living quarters were surely the best. However, the building of the armory had been constructed during the Soviet era, so while Feyel’s residence was the best, it wasn’t the only one.
Three rows of barracks were the soldier’s dormitories. Behind these dormitories, there were six standalone houses, which were the officers’ quarters. Surrounding the dormitories were various functional buildings, such as the armory, the mess hall, and the conference room.
Why did Yang Yi choose this position? Because it was the only spot—or the only tree—where he could see the entrance to Feyel’s quarters. To the left or right, the view would be blocked by the soldiers’ dormitories. So, Anton, preferring that vantage point, didn’t choose another tree, even if it meant being below Yang Yi.
Yang Yi had a map in his head, and what he needed now was to confirm that there were no trees blocking the view between him and Feyel’s residence. He was in luck; although it was just a small gap, he could indeed see directly to Feyel’s door—well, at least half of it.
Yang Yi’s view was partially blocked by the soldiers’ dormitory. The right side of the door was obscured by half of a rooftop, while the left side was completely visible.
Being able to see direct line of sight meant that a direct shot was possible, but the bad news was that Anton’s position had a similar view.
But the good news was that Anton was two meters lower than Yang Yi, which meant that his view would be obstructed by the rooftop of the soldiers’ dorm, allowing Anton to only see the left half of the entire door.
This meant that Yang Yi could see an additional quarter of the door more than Anton.
The door lock was on the right side of the door, so when someone opened the door, they would enter or exit from the right side. Of course, it was also possible that when the entire door was fully opened, the person would come through the middle of the doorway, but Yang Yi felt that if the door was to be opened, it would undoubtedly be slightly biased to the right.
With the assistance of night vision goggles, Yang Yi had climbed the tree before Anton, and then he had a slight advantage in height, which in turn offered him a bit of an advantage in field of view.
Whether the advantage could be turned into a final victory depended on Yang Yi’s shooting.
Yang Yi first adjusted his rifle and then began to calculate the wind direction and speed, and observe the distance.
The distance was 725 meters, which wasn’t too far for Yang Yi, and he was very confident. There was very little wind, almost none, as the location was within a forest where even strong winds were barely perceptible, and the visibility was decent, with nothing obstructing the bullet’s flight path.
Yang Yi decided to take a gamble, gambling on whether Feyel would exit from the right side of the door upon opening it.
Yang Yi adjusted the bullet’s impact point to a position slightly to the right of the door. He belonged to the kind of sniper who waits for the rabbit; moving the barrel quickly and firing at a moving target was difficult for him, but calculating the shooting elements in advance and waiting for the target to appear was something Yang Yizhen confidently guaranteed to be virtually infallible.
With everything ready, all that was left was for the target to appear.
If the target didn’t appear at the position Yang Yi had preset, it didn’t mean Yang Yi would miss, but that it would be very difficult to shoot before Anton.
It could be said, if the target opened the door, and Yang Yi managed to shoot before the target stepped out, then victory was surely his. If the target left the room and Yang Yi hadn’t fired, then likely Anton would win.
However, before shooting, Yang Yi had to confirm whether the person walking out was actually Feyel and to do so; he had to use high-powered binoculars rather than the scope.
So, before setting up his rifle and using the binoculars to begin the long wait and observation, Yang Yi peeked down for a moment.
Anton was performing almost the exact same preparations as Yang Yi, and coincidentally, when Yang Yi looked down, Anton also happened to glance up.
Yang Yi smiled confidently and then put his eye to the binoculars.
Feyel would leave his house between seven and eight o’clock every morning, then he would go to the officers’ mess hall for a meal, which was situated three hundred meters to his left.
Yang Yi was quite pleased with the results he had achieved so far; it could be said that he and Anton were partly successful. If all went as expected, Feyel would die, but whether it would be his shot or Anton’s that killed him, that was difficult to say.
A sniper’s job was dangerous and monotonous. Yang Yi kept his eyes on Feyel’s door through the binoculars, especially after seven o’clock, not daring to blink.
The time reached 7:20, and finally, the door suddenly opened.
