Chapter 669: Chapter 675 Infiltration

Jethro was able to gain the support of the high ranks of the Ukrainian government, so getting intelligence was actually quite easy. This at least spared Yang Yi and the team the time to do background checks on the target and the effort to figure out the target’s daily routine.

However, the Ukrainian government couldn’t fully control the military, so the simplest solutions, like reassigning the target or directly dismissing Feyel from military service, were not feasible.

Moreover, although Feyel’s rank wasn’t high, he had made a substantial amount of dirty money. With money, it was easier to get things done, especially when Feyel actually wielded real power. At least within the domain of his arsenal, he was king.

Feyel himself knew the situation was dangerous, so he stayed indoors whenever possible. Not only did he live on the military base, but his wife and children also resided there. As long as he was the head of the base, he would never step outside. If he were to be removed from his military position, then he would be useless to both Big Ivan and Deyo, and Jethro wouldn’t need to eliminate him.

But Feyel was unwilling to give up everything he had acquired, so he chose to exploit his position for as long as he could.

The fact that Feyel didn’t leave the base made things difficult. In order to take him down, one had to get close to him, or at least be able to see him.

The base was built during the Soviet era, located in a forest twenty kilometers outside of Zaporozhye. The entire arms depot and camp occupied a very large area and the base itself was surrounded by towering trees.

Lots of trees meant obstructed bullet trajectories, which implied one had to be very close to the target to shoot. But that wasn’t the main trouble; the real issue was the trees blocking the view.

Though Feyel’s position wasn’t high and his power wasn’t great, taking out Feyel, who was hiding inside the military camp, was still essentially an assassination of a key figure from any angle.

Identification of the target is an extremely important prerequisite for an assassination.

First, confirm that the person you’re about to shoot is indeed the target, then you can fire. This is the most basic requirement because if you miss the first shot, the target would either hide or be protected, making any further attempts impossible.

If you know the origin of the idiom "mistakenly hitting the secondary coach," then you understand how crucial target identification is.

That’s where the difficulty lay, because of the camp’s geographical location and Feyel’s caution, it was very hard to approach the base, let alone get close to Feyel.

The camp was surrounded by forests, typical temperate deciduous woods, with a complex environment. While infiltrating the camp stealthily might not be too difficult, Feyel was very cautious and had stationed lots of guards around the base, even extending beyond its boundaries.

The walls were topped with barbed wire, and there were seven guard towers around the perimeter of the camp walls, making it extremely difficult to scale them.

In any case, a reconnaissance of the terrain on-site was definitely necessary.

Yang Yi and Anton got out of the car, then they began to move slowly through the forest, heading towards the location of the camp.

The night was dark. Yang Yi brought night vision goggles, so the darkness had little effect on him, and he moved without any hindrance. However, to Yang Yi’s surprise, Anton didn’t bring night vision goggles but seemed to be unaffected just the same.

Yang Yi carried a sniper rifle, a pistol, a low-light night vision device, a thermal imaging night vision device, and a 50x high-powered observation scope as his main equipment. Anton, on the other hand, only brought a sniper rifle and an observation scope of the same model as Yang Yi’s. As for night vision devices, whether low-light or thermal imaging, he didn’t bring any.

Yang Yi thought that going on a night mission without night vision goggles was just making things uncomfortable for oneself, but Anton moved as if there was nothing amiss, which indeed surprised Yang Yi and made him feel quite pressured.

Anton, just when you think you’ve got him figured out, always manages to pull out some surprise that leaves you startled.

The coordinates of the military camp had been inputted into the GPS, Yang Yi paused and took out the GPS to check his position. Although he was equipped with night vision, advancing through the pitch-black forest made it impossible to determine direction, even with night vision, and relying on the GPS was the most convenient option.

Yang Yi didn’t mind traveling with Anton; the two of them started entering the forest from its edge, five kilometers away. Before approaching the military camp, it was certain they would be heading in the same direction because the shortest path is always a straight line.

Yang Yi stopped to see if Anton would take the wrong direction without following him.

If Anton lost his way, it couldn’t be better, since he only had a compass, no GPS, nor a map. A secret armory built during the Soviet era wouldn’t be marked on any map, so having one was useless.

But Anton didn’t slow down in the slightest. He didn’t even stop to take out his compass to check the direction, just kept heading straight towards the right direction.

Yang Yi waited for a while, and when he realized that he could no longer see Anton’s figure if he didn’t move, he could only quicken his pace to catch up.

Hoping that Anton would lose direction was futile.

Guided by the GPS, another six hundred meters forward was the western wall of the camp.

The US-Soviet rivalry had become history, but after Ukraine took over this armory, it made no renovations, so the armory largely remained in its original Soviet state.

There were no tall structures within the entire camp, since it was an armory, it wouldn’t make sense to build anything taller than the trees in the forest. That would just be signaling a target for bombing, and even the height of the watchtowers was much lower than usual, all camouflaged.

With the guidance of the GPS, Yang Yi knew to slow down, as it was now necessary to approach the camp carefully to avoid any sentries Feyel might have arranged outside the camp. To his surprise, Anton also slowed down almost at the same time and immediately went into stealth mode.

Yang Yi was surprised once again, not only did Anton seem to have a rangefinder attached to his eyes, but now it seemed as if he had a built-in GPS in his brain.

Yang Yi heightened his vigilance, but instead of moving forward cautiously, he took out his thermal imaging scanner and began searching for any hidden sentries in the direction he was heading and around him.

Now Yang Yi wanted to split up from Anton, so he headed in a different direction from Anton.

The thermal imaging revealed many heat sources: squirrels, hedgehogs, birds, but no people. Yang Yi searched slowly as he moved forward, careful not to make a sound. Yet, when he was getting closer to the perimeter wall of the camp, he discovered two human-shaped heat sources just outside the wall.

Feyel indeed was careful; he had indeed arranged sentry posts outside of the camp’s perimeter.

Yang Yi didn’t dare move; he had detected the sentries in advance with thermal imaging, but the direction he was moving in was too close to the sentries, and there was a high chance of being discovered, so he had to find another way to approach.

With the advantage of a single-lens reflex field of view provided by high-tech equipment, Yang Yi passed through the gaps between the sentries and approached the wall, and then he was shocked to discover that Anton had once again ended up in the same place as him.

In other words, Anton had chosen the same spot as Yang Yi, the only choice, which was why Anton had encountered Yang Yi once more.
