Chapter 566: Chapter 574: Sincerity

Hans’s smile faded away, and then he promptly released his hand and pointed to the sofa inside the room, saying, "Please, have a seat."

Yang Yi and Anton sat on the sofa, while Hans, with a stern face, pulled over a chair to sit opposite them, and said in a deep voice, "May I ask again why you are looking for me?"

Hans made Yang Yi a bit nervous; despite the slim possibility that Hans was one of the Grey-cloaked People, wearing a gray suit, Yang Yi couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy.

Looking at Anton, Yang Yi said, "You tell him."

Anton immediately said, "We know that you are an excellent intelligence analyst, so we would like to invite you to join our organization."

Hans raised his hand and said, "Wait a moment, I need to understand how you know I am with the Stasi. Before I left, I destroyed a large portion of my files, including all my own. So, how did you find out?"

Anton, very calmly, said, "I am with the KGB. Your job is to monitor and analyze the collected data, and my job was to watch you."

"Watch me?"

"Yes, watch you."

"Why watch me?"

"Because you are important. You had access to General Manfred. Delling. You were his important aide, so I was ordered to monitor you."

Hans frowned and said, "I didn’t realize anyone was watching me."

Anton replied with an even tone, "Of course, you wouldn’t notice. Otherwise, you would be dead by now unless I needed to eliminate you. Then, you would never discover my presence."

Hans laughed and said, "Russians, no, typical Soviet Union arrogance."

Anton said indifferently, "I watched you for several months. The day you and Klara. Droste broke up, I ended my surveillance. Specifically, it was after your quarrel over missing the date because of your sham work. After apologizing and promising her in bed not to be late again, you went to the restaurant at the door and spent six Marks on a meal. After sending Klara home, since her parents weren’t there, you had another round of sex in her bedroom. That evening, realizing her parents were no longer a concern, you went to Klara again and then broke up with her. Afterward, you returned to your place. Before you were ready to head to Stasi headquarters, just before leaving your house, I received a notice that I no longer needed to monitor you."

Without changing his expression, Hans said softly, "You remember the day we broke up very clearly. I even forgot about it."

Anton nodded and said, "Yes, it made a big impression because that was the day I was ordered to leave Berlin. We all knew the situation was beyond saving. It was a memorable day."

After saying this, Anton shrugged and added, "Actually, I know more about you than you think. You don’t like beer, you like roasted pork chops, you’re into women with large breasts, which Klara lacks, so occasionally you visit someone named..."

"Stop! That’s enough!"

Hans gestured with his hand and then said with resignation, "Alright, I believe that you were watching me. To be honest, I am quite surprised. I had no idea that someone had been monitoring me for months."

Anton spread his hands and said, "You’re not the only one who feels that way. It’s just that all the others are dead."

Hans looked at Anton, then at Yang Yi, and suddenly asked, "What do you want from me? Money? How much?"

It was finally Yang Yi’s chance to speak up, and he said in a grave voice, "Mr. Schneider, our aim in approaching you is to invite you to join our organization."

Hans asked in a low voice, "What organization?"

Yang Yi smiled and said, "The Organization of Water. We’re a small group, but strong. We don’t belong to any country; we work for ourselves."

Hans spread his hands and asked, "How can you prove that? How can you prove that your organization is strong?"

Yang Yi said solemnly, "Of course, I can demonstrate our strength, but Mr. Schneider, I want to know if you currently belong to any spy organization. If you’re doing more than just stock analysis, we can leave."

Hans firmly said, "After leaving the Stasi, I have not joined any spy organizations, and no one has contacted me. No one knows I was once part of the Stasi."

Yang Yi said solemnly, "What I am about to show you is very important. Are you sure you want to see it?"

Without hesitation, Hans said, "I want to see."

Yang Yi nodded to Anton, who took out a smartphone, operated it for a few moments, and then handed it to Hans.

The simple act of Anton handing over the phone carried significant implications.

By accepting the phone, Hans implied he would either leave with Yang Yi and the others, or he wouldn’t need to leave at all; he would remain in this office forever.

Thus, both Yang Yi and Hans were taking risks, each demonstrating great sincerity: Hans indicated he would join if Yang Yi’s team was strong enough, while Yang Yi dared to reveal his most secretive secrets to demonstrate their strength to Hans.

What Hans saw were the pieces of evidence Yang Yi and his team had collected about a shipwreck, and evidence involving Bu Cunzai and Mei Zheren.

After calmly viewing for a while, Hans was visibly shaken and said in a low voice, "So this is it, it really is so!"

Putting the phone down, Hans solemnly added, "Incredible, but these are the facts. Yes, with this information, you have proven your organization is indeed strong."

Yang Yi said gravely, "We are in need of someone to assess intelligence. If you have any conditions, you can state them now, and we can negotiate."

Hans unhesitatingly said, "I’ll join."

Hans’s agreement was so prompt it was almost hasty, leaving Yang Yi, who had been prepared to answer any questions or negotiate terms, momentarily stunned.

After a brief pause, Yang Yi asked in surprise, "You’re joining?"

Hans earnestly replied, "Yes, I’m joining. But I might need some time to think, I need to resign, go through a series of complex separation procedures, and hand over my work to someone else before I can completely leave. For that, I’ll need four and a half days. Today is Monday; by Friday afternoon at two o’clock, I can formally join you and the Organization of Water."

While Yang Yi was still searching for words, Anton stood up, reached out to Hans with a smile, and said, "I knew you would join. Congratulations on making a wise decision."

Hans shook hands with Anton again and said with a smile, "To be honest, the work of a stock analyst is dull and uninteresting. I really don’t like it. Being able to do the work I love makes me very happy."

Watching the two men complete the handshake, Yang Yi finally whispered, "Don’t we need to discuss your salary first?"
