Chapter 567: Chapter 575: Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Things went more smoothly than expected.
After leaving Hans’s office, Yang Yi lowered his voice and said to Anton, "From now on, keep an eye on Hans. Whatever equipment you need, I’ll have someone send it to you, and if you need help, I’ll arrange people for you. In short, keep a close watch on Hans—I want to know his every move."
After speaking, Yang Yi added with a hint of unease, "Am I going too far with this?"
Anton whispered, "You don’t trust him?"
"It’s not that, but seeing him in a grey suit makes me feel uneasy. I feel that since we’re lacking people like Hans, the Grey-cloaked People might also be in need of such professional talent. If we were able to find Hans, then isn’t it possible that the Grey-cloaked People could have recruited him a long time ago? Um, although it’s not very likely, I still feel uneasy."
Yang Yi paused for a moment, then added somewhat awkwardly, "Am I overthinking this?"
Anton replied calmly, "It would be too much if you didn’t think this way. How could we hire a new person without investigating them? So I’ve already placed a bug in his office."
"You bugged his office? When did you do that? How come I didn’t notice?"
"When we entered, when we sat down, when we said goodbye."
"Fuck, three of them?"
"Yes."
"Ugh, ugh, buddy, a bug is worth sixteen hundred US dollars—you think it’s necessary to put three in one office..."
"One is on Hans’s person."
"Oh, then that’s acceptable. Buddy, you did a fine job, but what if it’s discovered on him?"
"He’ll understand."
"You mean he’s bound to discover it?"
"Not necessarily, but even if he does, he’ll understand."
"Still, it’s not good if it gets found out."
"What we need is to see his reaction after we leave. If he’s going to contact the Grey-cloaked People, he’s doing it right now. So even if it’s discovered, it’s worth it. Go to the car and get the receiver; I want to stay here and monitor. You go back by yourself."
Feeling somewhat embarrassed to leave on his own, Yang Yi whispered, "Isn’t that bad, shouldn’t I stay with you?"
Anton smiled and said, "No, I’m better off on my own."
Yang Yi shrugged and replied, "Then I’ll take a taxi back. You take care of things here."
Yang Yi went back on his own. Leaving Hans in Anton’s hands for surveillance wasn’t a problem—Anton could do it twenty years ago, so he certainly could do it now.
The weather was nice, and the city of Frankfurt was quite charming. After walking a while, Yang Yi suddenly thought that since he had to wait a few days for Hans, it might actually be nice to do some sightseeing here.
Now the problem arose—Yang Yi began to ponder a question.
Should he invite Xiao Ran out for a walk, or should he ask Kate to hang out?
The initially eager Yang Yi now had a headache—his head was really starting to hurt.
If he called Kate, he’d have to leave Xiao Ran aside; if he called Xiao Ran, then he’d have to put Kate aside.
Invite both of them together? Yang Yi had just entertained the thought but immediately felt that he’d be better off killing himself.
So Yang Yi quickly gave up the idea of going out with a beautiful companion and decided it was better just to go back to the hotel and get a good night’s sleep.
"Sigh..."
Getting out of the taxi and arriving at the hotel entrance, Yang Yi couldn’t help letting out a long sigh.
How do those gods manage to have their cake and eat it too, with one arm around one beauty and the other around another? Yang Yi suddenly felt that maybe he should go back and ask Anton for advice again.
But Yang Yi then discarded the idea as well.
Have their cake and eat it too?
Two-timing and still not capsizing the boat?
With Kate and Xiao Ran?
Seeking one’s own death doesn’t go like this. Yang Yi felt that getting a face full of "peach blossoms" from Kate would actually be getting off lightly, after all, Kate wouldn’t really harm him. But Xiao Ran was a different story; as pretty as she was, her upbringing was dangerous, and the possibility of her taking a covert shot at him was quite high.
Give up one, and it hurts to think about it.
To have both, it’s impossible.
Suddenly, Yang Yi had an epiphany. He realized that if he wanted to be a scumbag and enjoy the affection of multiple women willingly, then he must never choose a woman who is too strong, too assertive, too smart, too petty, or one he has to see every day.
After understanding all this, Yang Yi decided it was best to just go back to his room and sleep.
And so, Yang Yi went back to his room to sleep.
However, before Yang Yi reached his room, he would pass by Xiao Ran’s room, and as he was passing by, the door to Xiao Ran’s room suddenly opened, and Xiao Ran appeared, surprised, saying, "Oh, you’re back."
"Hmm, I’m back."
"Did things go smoothly?"
"Very smoothly."
"Oh, then I suppose there’s nothing wrong. I’m going out for a bit; just letting you know."
Although she acted nonchalant and as if they’d just bumped into each other, Yang Yi knew Xiao Ran had been waiting for him. She was a tough woman who, even if she liked him, would never admit it. If she wanted to invite him out, she wouldn’t ask directly; instead, she’d simply mention she was going out, hinting for him to speak up if he wanted to come along.
If there were no Kate, Yang Yi would be overjoyed, but with Kate in the picture, it only gave him headaches.
"Yeah, go ahead."
Yang Yi replied, Xiao Ran took a look at him, then raised an eyebrow and said, "Fine."
Xiao Ran went back into her room and closed the door firmly.
Yang Yi silently sighed and continued towards his own room with heavy steps.
He flopped onto his bed and covered his face with a pillow, then gritted his teeth and muttered, "Office romances are the death of me!"
After saying that, Yang Yi removed the pillow, and then felt that something was amiss. So he covered his face again with the pillow and exclaimed louder, "Office love triangles are the death of me!"
Removing the pillow once more, Yang Yi stared blankly at the ceiling, full of boundless regret.
After a long while, Yang Yi suddenly became determined. He covered his face with the pillow again, a flurry of thoughts rushing through his mind.
Going out to find some distraction seemed like a good idea, but where to? He had never been and didn’t dare to; maybe call someone to go with him? With others, there was nothing to fear; he could just treat them, no big deal. Brian and Paul were definitely out of the question. Who had experience? Hank seemed like an option; he’d been single for a long time and was familiar with Frankfurt. Chris... better not. No, I should include him; otherwise, it wouldn’t be brotherly. But could I trust him to keep his mouth shut?
While Yang Yi was pondering these very serious and significant issues, someone knocked on his door, startling him.
He nearly jumped out of bed at the knock. Yang Yi had only thought about it, yet the feeling of nervousness changed his tone.
"Come in."
Kate pushed the door open and then smiled, saying, "I need to buy a few clothes, and I think you do too. Let’s go together."
Looking at Kate, the thoughts Yang Yi had just decided on, to find an alternative way, to save the country by taking a roundabout route, instantly melted away into nothingness.
